Sky says ADSL. Engineer says fibre

I've moved house and had an engineer out to install a phone line and give me a number.
He said fibre was available in the area and pointed to the box on the pole across the road with a yellow stripe on it and said that was my connection.
Sky have set me up in broadband. It was never in the house previously and said the system is saying I can only get ADSL at 24 Mbps but would look to see if I can be upgraded once
    BB was running.

What's the process for getting an upgrade.?
Surely an eircode check would have shown fibre as it does when I check availability on sky's website.
It only shows ADSL when I put the phone number in.

A neighbour up the hill got a fibre upgrade earlier this year.
    Thanks

    Don't think sky selling FTTH.
Thought it was only VDSL (max 100Mb) which requires an FTTC cabinet nearby.
If there's is none nearby, back to ADSL.

Some other operator could offer you FTTH.

Sky only started offering FTTH and it's not (unless its changed very recently) a public offering
On top of that the area may not be live yet for fibre.

Im saying fibre but it probably is only VDSL. I had 100 Mbps with them in Dublin.

Anyways, engineer said it was possible by pointing to box on the pole . Said a cabinet was nearby

Edit: just checked fibre rollout and it said fibre was available.

    30-1000mbps.

What do I need to say to sky to ensure they upgrade my line?

Is the box with the yellow sticker on the pole one of these?

As has already been stated they are in a testing phase for FTTH. You should really clarify with them whether they can provide this service to you now and if not when. You are liable to be left for weeks or months waiting for them to launch.

I don't plan waiting weeks. Unfortunately I'm away this week when the modem arrives.

You posted a photo of the box with the yellow dot:)

You posted a photo of the box with the yellow dot:)

The yellow dot is just a laser warning symbol on the box. What you saw was the yellow code identifier that is stuck to the side and not visible in my picture.

So the code identifier tells me if I can get fibre or not?

Engineer says yes, eir and the rest say yes. Its just the boards reps who aren't sure.

Staying in Dublin would have been so much easier but I wouldn't have had the amazing views I have :)

No. The site ED E told you about says it is available. That means you can order FTTH now from any of the ISPs here with a circular home icon

    https://fibrerollout.ie/rollout-map/where-to-buy/

Unfortunately you seem to have ordered from Sky. It is impossible for us to know if Sky can actually connect you. They may be able to, they may not. You need to ask them and cancel your order if they bull**** you.

There is every possibility that you end up with a crap ADSL service waiting for Sky to "upgrade" you when they see fit. Contact them ASAP.

Ask them what speed you will get at installation. If it is not at least 150Mb cancel and order from another ISP.

Sky f@ck around with every new RAP, if you're within your cooling off period cancel with them ASAP.

Then order FTTH from another ISP.

Yeah do as ED E said. Why are you ordering a phone line? You don't need it for FTTH. A new fibre optic cable will be brought into your premises.

I needed a new number. The previous owner took hers with her.

I'll be onto sky tomorrow. Thanks guys:)

Some (most?) of the FTTH providers will provide you with a phone service also, over the fibre.

Unless you need a number for actual phone calls you don't need a number for FTTH. It is all checked and ordered through the Eircode.

Even if you do need a phone number for phone calls it can all be done over the new fibre cable if you order from an ISP that has a clue what they are doing. Copper is dead!

Probably down to Skys haphazard interactions with ARD keys. Always caused em trouble.

    Just to update you all.

I cancelled sky. They eventually said they could upgrade to the cabinet for VDSL.

I just ordered with eir for FTTH @ 150 Mbps. Was offered up to 1000.
Its faster than I had living in Dublin!

    Thanks for all your help:)

Engineer from KN came today, wasn't due till next Wednesday.

6 hours after getting here he had new wires run from the poles to the house. He ran it across 3 poles and now getting 150 Mbps. More than I got in Dublin.

    Happy days:)
