    Our 06 smax from 2010 to 2017.
Bloody recession. Used to average about 2 years before that

Almost 14 years now with the e36. Its such a great all rounder that I've no real ambitions to change. Getting rare on the roads now.

Not exactly mine, but my dad bought Golf IV 19 years ago, and while he bought new car few years ago he never sold the old one- now every time I fly to my parents I use that old car to get from place to place. Odd feeling to know that it has a genuine mileage of 130.000 km and was not clocked :)

Had a 1.4 petrol 2001 Golf......used it for maybe 8 years before starting giving major engine problems.

02 Audi A4 and 08 BMW 5 Series. Both bought new and going strong.

I saw the thread title and thought you were discussing being chauffeur driven.

Sorry to say I had to let our last guy go after 8 years, his coke habit was affecting his driving. :D

I had a Passat for 7 years, had always intended keeping it long term, it was maintained in mint condition.

Guy in a transit didn’t stop approaching the main road one day and drove across it and nearly killed me. Haven’t had the heart since to keep a car longer than 3 years.

13 years, Skoda Fabia from new.
    1.2 HTP.
    Serviced every 10k.
Got rid due to chain rattle and few other bits that weren't going to make it worth fixing. Was sorry to let her go.
    Served me well.

I had a 2003 1.8 Petrol mondeo for 6 years, great yoke particularly when the only thing I had before that was a 1L Corsa

My grandfather bought a 1.0 Lupo new in 1999, still has it and only 39K miles on the clock.

My e36 was bought new in 99 and I bought it from it's original owners last year. Great cars.

I have my bangernomics S60 2 years this week. Will be keeping it until it dies, which seems to be impending but never quite arriving.

I had four bikes within a 5 year period, then I started in cars. First car I had about two years, second car for about 3.5 years and my current car (2008 Civic Type R) I’ve had just over 7 years. In that time I’ve only put about 55k km on the clock. At the time it was the best all rounder for me (and I’m also a big Honda fan :p)....it was comfortable enough for longer journeys, and it was fun enough when the mood took me! I don’t see myself changing anytime soon, there is nothing that really appeals for less than 20k at the moment, apart from a few older cars that I’d need somewhere to store them!

12 years! Mitsubishi Pajero Junior. Best car I ever had. Had to let it go as it was eating petrol. 10 years with my current car - Fiat Idea. Great car, runs on the whiff of an oily rag!

Had a Mazda 323 which was nearly 20 years old. Had to get rid of it because my feet kept getting caught in cables that were hanging down under the steering wheel.

I will have had my E46 for 2 years in December, and I hope to have it for many more years to come. Every now and again I get notions of changing it but I still enjoy the engine, steering, handling and gearbox so much so I don't see the point. It's getting new gearbox and diff oil the week after next so that will make sure I hold onto her for another while yet!

Next Wednesday, I will have my 06 Golf for 3 years.

I don’t expect to hold on to it for too much longer though.

Have the current motor 3 years. 240 k on the clock and going strong. Anticipating a clutch /dmf replacement in the near future but have a bit put aside for it. No plans to change it until the engine falls out the bottom. Golf vi.

A family member bought a CLK320 sport new in 99. Still has it garaged. Think it had 31k miles on it the last time I was in it. Such a nice car. 6 years just for me in a 320d.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,793 ✭✭✭coolisin

Mazda 3 for 10years. Was still going strong when I sold it!
Needed a diesel for the longer commute.
1.4 was particularly gutless in it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,076 ✭✭✭GustavoFring

4 years, spotted it on done deal lately and was sorely tempted to buy it back. Noticed it's taxed for a year now so whoever has it is probably keeping it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,155 ✭✭✭StereoSound

7 years with a Honda Civic Coupe. I finally let it go last year, it was exported to Tenerife where I got 2.5 times what I would have got over here for it. They go mad for old Hondas over there.

On average I usually keep my cars for 2 years before I get bored of them. The longest I ever kept a car was just over 4 years as I was driving high miles and funding a new house at the time. It was a dull as ditchwater Mk2 Toyota Avensis that I bought brand new back in 2003 but it served me well and the father had it for about 2 years after that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,157 ✭✭✭✭Alanstrainor

Up on 6.5 years on my 2001 e46. Really it's more that I'm a creature of habit and routine so it just suited to keep it going. That and I cover little mileage and put money aside for other things instead. I've been saying for years that it's days are numbered but I think after I have it 7 years I'll start to look around. Great motor.

The mother in law has her 2004 accord from nearly new, early 2005, ex dealer yoke, never gave a single problem still going strong 87k miles

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

6 and a bit years, never thought I’d keep it that long.

Keep it another 2.5 and it may well have a home to go to....

    2003 A4 2.0 multitronic bought ex-demo 2004 traded in 2013
    2004 Cr-V 2.0 auto bought approved used 2006 traded in 2015

Both started suffering electrical Gremlins so had to go

Bought a 99 Audi A4 TDi in 2002. Went like a bullet. Finally parted with it in 2016. Engine was perfect, just some things started to wear out. (bit like myself)

Ha, this one might be staying a bit longer as the house needs attention for the next few years.

12 and a bit years. Integra Type R. Kept it more by luck than judgement TBH. Probably would have flogged it years ago, but for various circumstances that cropped up that got in the way and here we are. Can't really complain as it hasn't given me a moments trouble and outside of insurance daylight robbery premiums has been dirt cheap to run. Pretty practical too, what with the hatch back.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

I’m coming up to 10 years on mine (320d coupe) I check the car sites daily for a replacement but cant seem to find something to tick all the boxes.

8 years for me with a Subaru Legacy B4. I still have it but it hasn't been a daily driver since 2016.

Heading for 16 years for my 03 Audi Allroad owned from new. It's a labour of love at this stage.

I had my 04 Honda CRV for 6 years. Fantastic car never gave trouble. The only thing was it was a 2ltr petrol and drank about €60 every 3/4 days. I still miss it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,113 ✭✭✭Gavman84

I had a tdci Focus for 5 years. I have my ST nearly 4 years and I don't see it being changed soon still love it and I'd need to spend big to get something I like more. Money needed for other things anyway.

14 months and it felt like I had it for ages as well :pac: That was my previous car which was a Seat Leon I bought as a Demo. I reckon I will keep my current A4 a lot longer though may even get to two years :pac:

Retired an 18 year old ford focus earlier this year. I had it for 8. Reckon I would have got it to 250,000 miles this year if rust in the rear inner wheel arches hadn't made it uneconomical to repair and keep on the road.

Only been driving about 14 months and in that time i've had 3 cars. An e46 lasting the longest, but high mileage during my time with it, didn't do it any favours. I was surprised it passed an NCT, but I didn't have it much longer after that. All in a little less than 9 months and 13k miles.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,573 ✭✭✭✭ednwireland

my 88 corrolla had it for over 10 years

There was a guy who used to work with me who owned a Mitsubishi Carisma from new and kept it for 14 years. I don't know what crime he committed in a previous life but it must have been truly heinous to deserve that.

Have had the 'Rolla van since May 2012 so her 7 year anniversary is rolling around next year.

300,000km's on the clock and the head gasket packed it in last week. New engine with 120k km's gone in to her over the weekend.

Hoping to drive it in to the ground (and back out of it again)

I had a 98 1'4 Starlet from 2000 till 2010. The only thing that let me down was the alternator 6 months before I sold it. I had a 1.6 petrol Zafira for another 10 years after that. It became a money pit so I scrapped it

    I also had a 79 Kawasaki z1000 LTD for 12 years and a 1977 Honda CB-X for another 10. I got 5 times what I paid for it.
