I joined a gym around 6 months ago with best intentions of going most days, but after a month i fell out of going and have taken up bad habits including late work nights, smoking a pack a week and eating out most lunches. Last week i got the flu and couldnt get over how run down i looked. Im about 66kg and quite skinny, ive never stuck with sports and have had an intermittent relationship with the gym.

From your own experiences, what is the best way to achieve some instant results, (talking about 6 weeks) so that i can see i have it in me to shake this rut, and continue with the gym?

Id like cardio in there but my chest and pecs are seriously underdeveloped for a 24 gear old man. I know eating is important too, and logging all my training, help a brother out here and dont be afraid to move this thread or break my balls for the poor habits. Internet abuse could be the fire that lights the fuse.

Swap the cigs for e-cigarettes. As you're a pack-a-day, I'd advise you start off between 18mg-24mg. Anything less, and you'll be back on the cigs. If you've quit, don't bother with the e-cigs.

Of all the gym machines, free weights, etc, which ones do you like? Finding what you like helps keep you going back to the gym, instead of procrastination stopping you from doing so.

Would regular swimming be an option?

    Morning,

Thankfully it’s just a pack a week between 3 of my mates so about 6 cigarettes a week and I’ve not smoked in a week so it’s not the worst habit. Thankful it hasn’t escalated!

I like the chest press, I’ve tried free weights but technique wise I’m all over the place. I’m not sure about when I should be pushing harder or letting it back.

I always end the session with a small swim and steam in the sauna. I think the swimming gets the heart going alright so up for that.

Thanks for the advice so far, havent asked around so it’s good to get some experienced information.

Has anyone a subscription to bodybuilding.com? Their plans look impressive but it sure if justified for €10 a month.

there are a ton of free plans out there but a few sessions with a PT could help, where do you live or work?

training will make you stronger but you wont put on any significant size in 6 weeks

6 weeks thinking is far to short term, put your health higher on your values in life as 15yrs from now you're not going to regret that decision and it will become one of the most important decisions you ever make

Not interested in getting a PT right now because I’ve very intermittent work nights, I work for a small airline, so it wouldn’t be fair on them as I could have to cancel up to an hour before if sh8t hits the turbofan.

I know that 6 weeks is short term, but I spent the same amount of time at it in March and saw absolutely no results so I’m looking for a plan of action, something I can follow that people have used in the past and saw some resemblance of improved form.

Start with a single session with a PT. Get some guidance on compounds.

Then suss out a decent programme.

Then trust the process whether it takes 6 weeks or 6 months to see visible changes

Do the swimming for the cardio. A quick shower to rinse the chlorine off you, and goto the gym.

Are you doing sets? Can you lift whatever weight you can for 3 sets of 20? If yes, increase the weight by 5kg the next workout. IMO, if you're doing what you can lift easily, your body will have no reason to increase muscle.

Most gyms, as part of the membership package, will walk you through what you do now, and what your goals are, and will give you a plan to help you reach the goals.

Swimming is for geeks and weaks. You need to pump that iron and pump it hard.

Go into a PT, ask them if they'll teach you to use free weights

Update: I went to gym and met a PT and he carried out a consultation. I’m going with him for 5 sessions at €35 each. I’ve to send my meal diary to him tomorrow along with my first session.

Took a photo this morning to track my progress, when I took it I felt very exposed but hoping i will be cringing more in 6 weeks when the programme is done.

Thanks for all the input so far.
