Deadlift vs squat

    Sorry if its been asked before but can anyone point me to a good clear (think Lifting for Dummies) explanation of the difference between deadlift and squat?

    In very simple terms:

    Squats are quad dominant and deadlifts are hip dominant. This means there is great quad activation in the squat and greater posterior chain activation with deadlifts. There is some carry over between both lifts, and their variants, but they are very different movements.

    Is that what you wanted to know or is there some reason you think squats and deadlifts are basically the same?

    They're different movement patterns as well. In the squat you're standing up with the weight whereas with a deadlift you're hinging it up.

    One is picking something heavy up off the ground.
    The other is sitting down with something heavy on you shoulders

    Is the regular deadlift a great back exercise? Half of the material out there says it's legs only, while the other half mentions that it's a back exercise, so I'm confused.

    Look for someone with a strong deadlift and small back. The results should tell you the answer.

    It’s not legs only. It’s a great lift because it involves so many muscle groups. You won’t get a decent back from deadlifts alone though, you’ll also need rows and pull ups.
