    Not really ready to sell, was just enquiring for now.

    But I do see myself changing maybe in the next 12 months.

    Just got a shock when I seen the figure. I have had quotes before for it and none were anywhere near that low. I just think its a ridiculous figure.

    As for selling privately, I tried this in the past with a car priced at €10k, and got little or no interest. I think its hard to sell privately, unless you make it so attractive, and even then some people will think 'whats wrong with that car, its very cheap'.

    I agree... IMHO tough to sell privately for over 8k. Heading in 8+k terroritry and you're starting to attract the buyer that needs finance and a lot of tyre kickers.

    You are competing with 161 UK diesel golf's, which are rapidly falling out of favour over there and a terribly weak pound.

    I've bought and sold afew lemons, but ive also bought and sold some great cars.

    Insist on a pre purchase inspection at a local indy garage you trust and go in eyes open. Just because a seller has a forecourt doesn't mean they won't do everything possible to screw you.

    Sold my car recently for 15.5k had to drop from 17 to 16k after a while as not much genuine interest. I was patient and had a good ad IMO, dropped price after right amount of time etc.

    Somebody posted on another thread, there's a buyer for every car which I believe is true.

    Vast majority of trade-ins in Ireland would be diesel.

    But again, dealers look after no1. They would say "ah sure diesels aren't selling any more" to someone like me trying to trade one in, yet to someone on their forecourt looking to buy it would be "nonsense, there's loads of years left in diesels".

    If you're taking that much of a hit at trade in and private sale why would u even bother?
    You'd be far better off to just keep the car and drive it into the ground. When you're buying new the only way to get your proper money's worth it of it is to drive it to death. Otherwise your just constantly shelling out money on depreciation. Pure waste.

    They are taking into account , that they could have it sitting there for a while before selling it, and I am shure they would have to have it serviced, as well as making a tiny profit for it in the end, they also valet these,

    4. You will never get a serious price via email or over the phone. You need to be in front of them.

    13k seems low but I'd agree with Bazz that you aren't going to get serious figures via email.

    We priced trading in our Golf 162 diesel highline around 3 months ago, it has a fairly high mileage for a 2 year old car (95k kms) and we were offered €18.5k. Maybe the market is moving that fast but i would expect a little more than €13k for a 161 highline diesel with a reasonable mileage.

    Your car is worth more than 13k unless yours has massive mileage but in reality he’s not even offering you that as he would probably give 2k/3k off whatever Renault you are buying if you had no trade in.

    Unlike others saying to sell privately, my advise would be to go to as many others dealers as you can and see what offers you can get.

    How much is a 2 year old Golf from the UK? Because that's what you are competing against.

    Your car is only worth what the buyer is willing to pay not what you want. Also the trade in price doesn't matter its the cost to change which counts, its easy to give a good trade in if you price the other car high.

    Its not that simple. Buying a car in the uk has travel and car check costs and is a total pain in the arse to organise everything from the start right through to vrt. Put simply its not for everyone and buying a ready to go Irish model from a dealer would be worth a €2k premium to a lot of people.

    However when your talking about trade-in values then what the same car can be bought for in the UK is relevant. From personal experience this is what dealers here are basing their trade-in valuations on. They generally don't want to buy your current car for more than it can cost them to buy and import the same car from the UK for.

    Out of interest OP what car were you looking to trade in against?

    Not really. Plenty of middlemen bringing cars over already and charging less than 2k for the privilege.
    UK Car imports have 13 2016 Golfs with a 1.6 engine for less than 17k euro including VRT and delivery.
    Not sure how spec matches the highline, but that's where you're aiming with a private sale.

    That valuation is a bit low IMO.

    I traded in my 151 Comfortline 1.2 petrol earlier this summer.

    At the start of the year I went to audi south dublin and got a similarly insulting offer, €11k. This was from a guy who had seen my car and given me a test drive on an a3 so I don't know what he was playing at. It was average milage and it good knick, full service history at the main dealer etc.
    The car i was looking for was ex demo and he was basically trying to make the full value on it by giving me a discount on the price but equally giving such a crap price on trade it that it was completely not worth my while. I told him to take a run and jump.

    I actually traded in at a midlands VW dealership who my family have years of experience with. Sight unseen he offered me €14k (a VW dealership in Dublin also offered €14k so this must be the standard VW offer) but once I told him i was serious and wanted his best offer, he ended up beating the Dublin garage by €1300, so I did the deal :)

    Why do you want a Renaut anyway?

    Your car will always be worth more than what a dealer offers you for it. Sure they have to stock it, clean it, service it, promote it's sale, pay sales commission,

    Do you expect them to give you market rate?


    And anyway, a dealer could offer you 20k for the car, depending on what you are buying from them and what they have into that. It's all subjective.

    Dealer 1 selling a new golf for 30k offers you 15k on your old one.

    But my old one is worth more.

    Go down the road. This dealer is going to give you 20k for your car. Ah he is much nicer to me,.............. But he wants 35k for your new car.

    What's the difference really

    It’s not always like for like, the lad down the road might be happy making 2k on the deal where as the first lad might want to make 8k. In the Op’s case you can be certain that the Renault dealer has big margin versus rrp

    Savings are to be made in the U.K but ‘Irish’ cars are always more expensive if your buying secondhand from Irish dealers, because a lot of folk don’t want an import, they want the dealer to tell them who owned the car, to show them the Irish service history, and importantly a clock in Km’ versus Miles. Warranty is a big deal too, eg it is impossible to get any goodwill warranty on imported cars from the Irish distributor

    I cannot agree with some of those points.

    - Normally UK cars sourced from reputable dealers have full transparent and detailed service histories, alot of Irish cars don't because the Irish tend to skimp on servicing and either only get it serviced every few years/when due the NCT or get Joe the mechanic living across the road who will change the oil at mates rates for cash and no VAT.

    - Regarding km clocks - judging by the constant increased number of used cars being imported isn't such a big deal to buyers here. Yes you have some die hards who cannot or don't want to adjust to mph clocks despite us using them for decades prior to 2005.

    - And warranty, some warranties are not transferable but others are depending on the manufacturer, the duration of the warranty, how the warranty is structured or what dealer franchise you bought it from.

    Most importers will give you a 6 month warranty.
    Sure, it's not as good or convenient as a main dealer, but given an import costs similar to a private sale, it's fantastic

    Kinda of testing the water, but if I got a decent deal I'd change soon too
    Thinking of taking a wee run around some local dealers in the coming weeks, just to get an idea.

    I love the Golf. Great to drive and it has all the bells and whistles.

    However, think it's just a little small in the back for 3 kids. And the kids are only getting bigger! So have been thinking about getting something bigger.

    The Renault was a 2018 Scenic. It really looks the part, but reading reviews of them online has started to put me off them a bit.

    Funnily enough I've been tempted to go and have a look at one too. I've not done much research however. Do you mind me asking what's putting you off? The Kadjar is nice but I don't feel the space is as good for the price you're paying for the Scenic.

    Yep with UK dumping diesels people are buying Audi's now instead of VW's and yes diesel cars have little value. Our big standard cars up against UK imports at good prices with lots of extras.... I'd sit tight until the government here decide what track they'll take with diesels cause if they ban them like the UK diesel cars will be worth SFA and nowhere for us to dump them to

    UK has not and is not banning diesels or petrols. They intend to phase them out by 2040, but even then are not going to ban them outright. I don't think any 2nd hand value is going to be determined by a might happening in 10 or 20 years time.

    I think as a family car the Scenic is one of the better looking ones.

    However I have read a lot of the online reviews from UK outlets and they don't come across as a car to buy.

    I just need a little more rear space for the kids as they are growing. Perhaps something like a Passat or Octavia would suffice?

    Also like the look of the Seat Ateca, and I'm not normally a fan of suv.

    Yeah I think the problem with selling cars over the 10k Mark is the finance issue. I bought a new car this year and due to a change in circumstance thought about trading in for a completely different type of car. They offered me 25k on trade in, I bought at just over 35k. They said the reason being that ppl wouldn't buy off them with finance at 6 or 7% when VW are selling finance at 0.9%.. If anyone is in the market for a newish car though, gd discount here 😂😂 :)

    I don't think its that hot a deal to be honest. 8k seems expensive to me just to go up one year to a car that yes is more practical for your needs, but the Golf SV isn't exactly a great seller for VW. I cannot see VW bringing launching a new one when the Mk8 arrives next year.

    Run a mile from the Renault and don't look back
    The ideal vehicle for you is a VW Transporter Kombi - with a bulkhead behind the back seat you'll have a huge boot, ideal for family outings, camping etc. - you'll travel in comfort, safety and style
    You can fit a 4 bike rack on the back door if into cycling!
    As you'll be trading in a VW you should get a better deal than dealing with a non VW franchise. The Transporter is not the cheapest but it's one of the best in that range - you should get 10 or more years out of one no problem.
    No need to buy new there's a good selection of 2012 upwards available here and in UK
    M.
