Does anyone know what happened with the HD channel?

It was testing but it was replaced by eir Sport 1 HD as a test before that launched

There was an Ad in the Radio Times promoting FreeSports HD would launch but no sign of it unfortunately

They didn't appreciate the footprint on Astra would create rights issues with regard to HD content. So it'll never happen except on cable or Freeview if it happens at all.

    In what way, I wonder.
The only pro14 rugby shown live is a 3rd game that the 2 main channels (premier 1 and 2 / eir 1 and 2) can't show as they are broadcasting a live game at the same time. Perhaps with s4c in hd and freesports in hd on satellite they were afraid viewers in Wales wouldn't sign up for the subscription but I doubt those people would sign up anyway if only watching a game or two.

The picture quality is like tv3.

Thanks all, just curiosity. There HD testing was a great picture.

There is a general thread about FreeSports, with some discussion about HD in the laters posts. But I don't think it throws any light on the reason the tests ceased.

Who said this was the issue?

That's what I understood. Anyway they've ditched it for the foreseeable future, maybe Premier Media decided they'd be undermining their pay channel.

It's a pity they ditched it. The picture quality was so much better than what is there now.

Costs you'd imagine would be quite high for Sky.

As they rely on advertising revenue, these extra HD costs might have been too much for them for what they are getting in return on their rights content.

HD quality was great but as it's free sport I'm still quite happy to watch it

Freeport maybe making another attempt go HD: 11642 H 23000 2/3 DVB-S2 8PSK testing now (7100 /7101) One is encrypted, one is not.

Saw that earlier, the signal isn't stable for me. Not sure if that's my boxes fault or not.

I had to force a scan to find it, but all seems fine here.

    Good pic again.

Try unplugging any DECT cordless phones you may have , that frequency is likely to suffer from interference.

This channel seems to be transmitting different content to the SD channel.

Presently Formula E Street racing on SD while Skiing and such on HD channel.

No confirmation that the HD Sports channel which is testing is FreeSports. I think people are hoping it will be it

The HD seems to have a repeating video, which also gets shown on the SD channel ...... if that is any indication.

Freesports HD to launch next Monday (13th) on Satellite

    11426 V SR 27500 FEC 5/6 DVB-S QPSK (52575)

Wow, look out ITV4! with their slightly fuzzy La Liga.

I wonder which codec they will be using. There are two varieties in common use - BBC and ITV use one, Channel 4,5, Smithsonian, Quest use another and my freesat box hates the BBC/ITV one for some reason.

It is not clear whether this is a FTA channel or a Sky subscribed channel.
11626V which is mentioned in the same post is apparently a Sky/encrypted channel.

It's on a UK transponder with all other channels FTA so fingers crossed

    Don’t they all use H264?

They'll be testing for weeks yet, I'd say it'll be mid- late June before we see anything. A pity Cos the Euro U20 starts next week and they have exclusive UK/Ireland coverage
