Free Scientology events

So I noticed on Facebook and other social media that the Scientology centre in firehouse has started to run free family events.
The next one is at the end of September and it’s a dinosaur family fun day, all free of course once you give them your name address and contact details.
Are people unaware in Ireland the history of Scientology Or what they are.
I mentioned it to a few friends who are tagged as going and have got tickets and they didn’t have a clue about them and just said it’s a day out for the kids.
So what are people’s view on this ? harmless day out or something more sinister.

Yay, do any of them include a screening of Battlefield Earth?

I know it's Tom Cruise's gig and he was laying pipe in Katie Holmes AND Nicole Kidman.

If that's part of it then I might have a look at a few brochures, yeah.

Will Tom Cruise be making an appearance?

And how much does this free weekend cost?

I've wondered if there would be potential benefits to going along. I've read a lot of bad things but those involved seem to live good lifestyles and progress through the ranks in their chosen careers rapidly. It seems like a potential ticket to becoming successful.

A lifetime of receiving promotional material apparently. It will be addressed to you so a no junk mail sign won't stop it either.

This amazes me everytime someone brings up big bad Scientology. It hasn't done a a fraction of the damage as the Catholic Church yet you'd happily let your friends get involved with them.

What makes one a cult & one a religion?

They are both nuts imo but I could never say Scientology is more harmful than the church

You're not very clear about which religion you are talking about, that description applies to almost all of them.

If they went straight to the alien overlord thing loads of people would get involved, but alas they don't.

Outside of that. They don't all work within the church. Some friends in the acting business have told me it's much easier to find work as a scientologist, they seem to all work together to get eachother promoted in other fields too.

I'm not a member of any church. I'm strongly agnostic. I was just pondering the potential benefits of joining a cult that seems to push people to be successful as crazy as that cult may be.

They targeted actors as they were household names and would give good publicity so they could milk the lemmings at the bottom for all they were worth. In fairness they also milk the celebrities as well

It amazes me when people appear to downplay its dangers - yes it is big and bad. So what if other religions are as bad? It doesn't necessarily follow that scientology is therefore less deserving of the criticism. I mean, you can criticise both. And at least people can leave the Catholic church today or choose not to practise. Also they don't have to pay thousands and thousands to progress.

First time I've ever been called a scientologist, I can assure you I am not, but you probably won't believe me anyway so there is no point in arguing about it. If you check my post history you will see I am clearly against all organised religion.

I think the point was with Christianity you don't have as many jumping in so quickly to talk about how bad it is when arguably in total it is worse, but on a per member basis I haven't heard as many bad things about anything else as I have Scientology.

Just a correction though, you cannot leave the Catholic Church, they changed the rules to forbid it about 6 months after I turned 18 and just before I got around to leaving myself. Now that say once you're in you're always Catholic no matter what you feel or decide yourself. If asked for historical records in the future they will confirm that you were Catholic even if you hated the church since your first independent thought.

OP is wondering if they should warn their friends of the danger. I'm just wondering why op wouldn't be warning their friends about the danger of the Catholic Church? We know for a fact that they have been involved in slavery, human trafficking, torture, sexual abuse & much more. Many of its priests have been convinced & sentenced to prison. We know that non offending priests & bishops have covered up these crimes often letting rapists move on to rape more children.

I just think it a bit nuts to warn people about one religion but not the other.

    Edit
You can't leave the church. I was baptised as a baby and I can't be unbaptised. The church won't let me leave if I want to

Yeah, I'd say I had a 90% reduction in junk mail since I put one up. I also fire off a one line complaint email to any I do get and that seems to stop the ones that come in despite the sign most of the time except Maxi Zoo.

I heard they demand 10% of your income, but if they increase your income by more than 10% are you not, as Charlie Sheen says, winning.

That's what I've heard, if it's more or less I've no idea, only know whatever hearsay happens in the local don't know much more about them other than reading bits by anonymous and watching going clear.

Read a great book on Scientology last year (Ruthless: Scientology, My Son David Miscavige, and Me). The father of the current "leader" details his time in the organisation from it's early beginnings to his life out of it. Absolutely fascinates me as to how people (some of them highly educated) can get into these cults in today's day and age
