Here's another puzzle for those of you in the mood:

Two men meet each other for first time in donkeys years.
"Hi John, how are you (followed by usual small talk)"
"So, John, did you have children?"
    "Yes, James, I did, I had 3"
    "How old are they?"
"Well, John, I know how you love a puzzle so here goes:
the product of their ages is 36. The sum of their ages is equal to the number of that bus over there!"
James thinks for a while and replies "No, I need more information"
John says "OK, the eldest likes yoghurt" to which James replies "Aha, got it"

    How old are the children?

After a bit of a leap of logic I think the answer is 2,2 and 9?

    Here is the answer:
First piece of info: product of their ages is 36 so all of the factors of 36 are:

    36, 1, 1 Sum: 38
    18, 2, 1 Sum: 21
    12, 3, 1 Sum: 16
    9, 4, 1 Sum: 14
    9, 2, 2 Sum: 13
    6, 6, 1 Sum: 13
    4, 3, 3 Sum: 10

Second piece of info: sum of ages is same as number of that bus. James can see the bus so he knows what the sum of their ages is. James then says "that's not enough info." so that means that there must be two sets of ages that have the same sum (two sets have 13 as sum above) so it has to be one of those i.e. 9, 2, 2 or 6, 6, 1.

Last piece of information: eldest likes yogurt implying that there must be an eldest. The two possibilities are 9, 2, 2 or 6, 6, 1 so it must be 9, 2, 2 given that the 6 year olds are twins and no eldest!

Is. 2, 3 and 6 not also a legitimate answer?

The bus must be No. 13 (and James could see this). If it was any other Bus number : 38, 21, 14, 10, 16, James wouldn't have needed any more information because there was only one set of factors that added up to that number. The fact that he needed more information means that there must have been more than one set of factors with the same sum i.e. that meant it could have been either 9, 2, 2 or 6, 6, 1 ONLY (otherwise no need for more info)

    How?
They both know the number of the bus but we don't. Therefore the only info we can glean from the fact that he needed more information is that even knowing the number of the bus meant not being sure of the ages of the children, the only number this makes sense with is 13 since it is the only number that occurs more than once in the possibilities.
The fact that we are then told there is an older child means that the answer has to be 2,2,9 as all other number combinations that give a product of 36 have been eliminated.

Technically the two 6 year olds in one of the possible answers from sum of 13 could be twins which would mean the oldest twin (by minutes) liked yogurt and also would satisfy the criteria.
