With all their problems with race, guns, sexuality, politics and extremes...no we should not be a part of that.

Sure, haven't they a load of "rapey" priests, so it wouldn't be that much of a change.

I mean on the one hand I dont want to leave europe but you make a good point on the hotdogs. We have needed bigger hot dogs for too long.

    Don't you mean 52nd?

Puerto Rico is almost certain to become the 51st.

And if we're having a vote it's a no from me. I don't want a cretin as my president.

You have a cretin as Prime Minister/Taoiseach.

Do we really want to become Israel's slaves?.

The USA wouldn't even give consideration to Ireland becoming a US state.

Ireland should aim a little lower like say Mexico.

Maybe Mexico would consider Ireland as a state.

Maybe NI could build a wall.

With all the Irish over there? I wouldn't say its impossible. We would need a Govt that wants to join the US though.

That's be a No from me.

    America is strange place.

It's the greatest country in the world:
However, it's also the worst country in the world:

It's like 20 different countries in one. You still have Cowboys, who have never even seen a city, you still have Indian Reservations. You have the Bible belt to the porn capital San Fernando Valley. You have the sunny islands of Hawaii to the bitter cold of Alaska.
You have middle America, those who have never seen the sea, to the most amazing coastal cities. You have 10 different climate on one day, Ireland is cloudy with a chance of rain.
Really is nothing like America any where else, it's what you want it to be, unlike other countries that are what they are.

True, but Russia is far more diverse than America in terms of what you mentioned above.

The thing about America is, if you're a white man with a good education/background/job It's the greatest place on earth to be in terms of what you can achieve. There is very little out of your grasp so long as you work hard for it.
Amazing Home, Healthcare via your Employer, Nice Cars, Food, Everything is cheaper, etc.
There is nowhere else you a can achieve more and have more.

However on the other side of that there are major social issues in America.
There is no social net. If you get sick and you don't have health care, you're screwed. If you lose your job you could lose everything really quickly.

America has huge issues with Crime despite having more Law enforcement and Prisons than any other country.

    The Whole country is armed.

Parts of America are extremely racist.

And then there's the aspect of how america conducts itself on a global scale.
They have an extremely aggressive foreign policy.

Already is a 51st state. Over the last 25 years. We thought it would be all just great. Be careful what you wish for sometimes.

No, we have a flexible approach to constitutional amendments (even if we need to revote to get the a result) as opposed to the stuck in the 1700s attitude to the right to bear arms.

A bear's right to bear legs is enshrined in the US constitution. That poll is rigged by the way.

Of course we would also be expected bow and scrape before everyone wearing a uniform Soldiers, Guards, traffic wardens and even wannabees in uniforms bought on ebay :pac: .

"thank you for serving your country and protecting our freedoms" :D

To join the US we'd have to abandon healthcare and social welfare. The American phrase "You can't fire me , I quit" is an indication of just how little support there is for the unemployed.

And abandon half decent food for inspid muck.

And a political system that's resulted in the most stable government in Europe for the last century. We are the only country that didn't swing much left or right.

We'd also have to abandon lots of environmental stuff.

    And holidays and employment rights.
It might be good if you are a rich libertarian. But if you are barely making ends meet then it would be a complete disaster.

    .

Its easier to have Healthcare for a Country of 4 Million than it is for a Country of nearly 400 Million. We do have Medicaid and Unemployment and Welfare Programs so the whole "Americans don't care about the Poor" is a false narrative.

It would solve the 'problem' of the undocumented Irish in America

I love the USA for trips and holidays and the best National Parks ... but NO NO NO NO!!!!

Their political system is f*cked, they are so f*cking unbelievably divided - more so than ever before, and the so called "liberals" are making it worse with their identity politics bullsh1t.

    Complete and utter tosh.

The US should have economies of scale, so should be cheaper even if they needed a further layer to manage the 100 people in charge of regions the size of us.

Long term illness sucks here, but that's pretty universal.

But if you need to visit A&E here it's a €100 charge, even if they have to operate on you and keep you in for a while. In the US even if you have a decent healthplan you could still wind up bankrupt.
