    What ratio for you use?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,460 ✭✭✭lennymc

i think i used to use about 2:1, it was a slog, and i tended to do a lot of running up hills....

Does anyone know if bray is the Leinster championships? Its important to know, because nationals gridding places were based on the provincial championships last year. Leinster riders weren't assigned as many points as Ulster riders because the turnout for the Leinster champs were low. It would be nice to know in advance this year. To be clear, this was not brays fault, their race was only assigned as the Leinster champs a week or two beforehand.

To answer with a question, are the criteria for Januarys CX nationals gridding published anywhere yet?

No one knew (OK I didn't know) the gridding was based mainly on the provincial champs last year, The assumption was it was based on the relevant provincial league

Grirding was based on provincial champs and UCI points I think. Fixx series etc had no baring on gridding.

Yes that is exactly what happened but I had understood beforehand that provincial leagues were going to be used and is part of the reason why there wasn't a date or venue for the Leinster provincial championships last year until very late in the day.

I only did the "Leinster championships" as I wanted to support the Bray Wheelers lads putting on a CX race, which in itself only became the provincial champs a few days before the event.

I must go and google fu the exact situation this year but last year the criteria were unclear (to me) until after the provincial champs were over.

100% agree. I think Leinster M40 was 1 or 2 people short of the number of competitors required to achieve double points(which Ulster achieved).
Ultimately not big stuff but important to a individual who has set goals for themselves.

Details about the UCI ranked international cross race in Belfast

    http://www.cyclingulster.com/bioracer-atlasssian-international-uci-cyclocross/

Bioracer – Atlasssian International UCI Cyclocross

    Aug 16, 2018

The Irish cyclocross scene both north and south of the border has seen phenomenal growth in recent years and it takes another huge step forward this coming season with it’s inaugural UCI race, the Bioracer – Atlasssian International Cyclocross, promoted by Kinning Cycles, taking place in Belfast on Sunday October 7th. The event is also supported by co-sponsors McKinley Contracts.

The event, a UCI C2 graded race, is the first of it’s kind ever to take place in Ireland and will see witness to international riders from the USA, Italy and France so far as well as the best riders on the Irish domestic circuit.

The Bioracer – Atlasssian International Cyclocross boasts one of the highest prize funds for any single day bike race in Ireland, with almost 4,000 euro spread across the UCI events. Women will receive equal prize money to men, another milestone for Irish cyclocross.

With valuable UCI points up for grabs in the Junior, Women’s and Men’s elite events, the racing is sure to be exciting. The course in Mallusk, just outside Belfast has been used for previous Ulster Championships and is a mixture of fast straights, cambers and road sections to provide a diverse range of conditions for riders.

The event was born out of a conversation between Glenn Kinning and Cycling Ireland Cyclocross Coordinator Andy Layhe earlier this year. Layhe said, “Driving to the last World Championships, myself and Glenn saw no reason why we couldn’t organise a bigger event back home because it seemed like a natural progression alongside the huge growth of the sport here.” Layhe added, “I take my hat off to Glenn for organising so many events through the season alongside his own racing – if it were not for committed people like Glenn the scene wouldn’t be where it is today.”

Peter Van den Abeele, UCI Head of Off-Road and Deputy Sports Director echoed the progression of Irish Cyclocross that saw the largest ever team take part in last season’s world championships, “It is great to have a UCI cyclocross event taking place in Ireland for the first time. I thank Glenn Kinning – athlete, coach and event organiser – and his team for taking on the challenge of hosting an international event. This addition to the UCI International Calendar is in line with the continued globalisation of the cyclocross discipline, which is reaching an ever-increasing number of countries outside the traditional cyclocross nations. I have no doubt that the BioRacer Atlasssian International Cyclocross will delight the spectators and provide a magnificent showcase for our sport. I wish everyone racing in Mallusk, Belfast, the best of luck.”

The full day’s race schedule is yet to be finalised, but will include a series of supporting events including U14, U16, B race, M40 and M50 events prior to the official UCI races.

The organisers would also like to thank the passionate cyclocross community who have assisted in donating to a Crowdfunding page that was set up to help raise funds for the event. The £1000 fund target was met in just 7 days. Details of the crowdfunding page can be found here: https://www.gofundme.com/international-cyclocross-race-irl

The organisers look forward to welcoming everyone to the event which is hoped will generate a great atmosphere and some really exciting racing.

A dedicated web page for the event will be live soon. If you or your company would like to be involved or require more information please email info@kinningcycles.com

Well that was great craic! No idea where I came - somewhere between middle and back I'd say.

That was good fun. Finished way back but having done zero training I was happy to survive.

Hard ground, dusty rather than mucky and fast. Much easier to corner at speed than usual and also to pick up speed on the grass sections.

Forgot to wear gloves and subsequently have a massive blister after hanging on to the bars too tight. Ouch.

    Hi,

Im a road racer who has never tried cross before and id like to. Id love to improve my bike handling and Id like to add a bit of spice to the winter training as its a long time till March.

Should i try turning up at a cross race and racing? This is probably a bad idea on road racing, people usually say, do a few club races first? Is there club races? Id have to join a club for that i guess!

    Can unattached riders, ride them?

I guess an entry level cross bike would be grand for trying it out?

Whats cross racing like? I hear its real fast and intense. I think theres an A and B category. A is i guess similar to A1/A2 level in road and B is kind of A3/A4 level?

    Thanks!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,833 ✭✭✭ballyharpat

Savage racing, no high intensity done, so was definitely a leg and chest opener, rolled a tub halfway through the last lap, was comfortable around 20th before that, I love cx :)

Yes to the first 3 questions.

Depending on where you live there are leagues in Ulster, Munster, Connacht and Leinster and one off races in Navan, Dublin, Belfast and so on.

Enter a B race and see how you go. If you go very well and win the B race you'll be upgraded to the A race for the following event (if in a league)
Cross racing is high intensity effort for about 50 minutes so you need to be sure that's a good thing for your training if the road season from March is the main goal.
It helps if you can corner as you can then get recovery in corners.
    Enjoy!

I'm around South Dublin area and was thinking of getting some training in on the way home over the next few weeks. I'll probably just hit the phoenix park but thought I'd ask to see if there's anything going on!

First CX race at Kilternan (B race) and a brilliant experience - good hard honest racing and happy to bag a good placing so caught hook, line and sinker now!

Are there any photos from Saturday night? There appeared to be a good few people taking pictures and wanted to see if there were any taken and posted online. I looked at the Supercross Cup FB and nothing yet and wanted to see if anywhere else.

I think I'll have to give it a miss so... I wish more people were pushed into A race. I know somebody that has placed in the B races for the last couple of years and still enters them.

I think about a third of the B field would be happy out doing the A race.
Look at the lap times from Kilternan - or any race from last year.

You'll still get a race with the additional brucie bonus of getting lapped by the leaders and getting to see how the top lads take the corners (for about 45 seconds)

And the A race doesn't seem to sell out so no last minute panic if you forget to hover over the internet at 9am on a Tuesday morning or whenever the race opens for entries..

I'm involved in arranging the CX League, we ran it last year and had people from not so local clubs so to speak, Swords, Balrothery, Lucan etc. If anyone is interested just bang off an email to OldcastleCC@gmail.com and we'll see if we can accommodate you.
It's a varied course with grass/forest and not to be taken too serious, we try where possible to get everyone their lap times but don't want to add expense of chipped timing to keep the cost low for racers and encourage those new to the sport also.
The Adventure X sportif is also in the planning stages and details are usually released end of October.

    Cheers!

I rode the Lurgan race today. First one in 4 years. I had forgotten how hard they are. That memory came back quick enough though. Such an intense effort. Course was non-technical and very dry... hence fast. I sucked at the cornering for the first couple of laps. Got better as I went on, but still not great. Too much time lost on them. Only the spiders in my shed have been using my CX bike for the last 4 years so I guess I'm pleased enough. Pizza and wine time now.

Rode the first race of the Munster league today in Killarney, run by my own club. The weather was dry and warm, and the course fast and hilly with lots of technical hairpins and a spiral. Richard Maes from Killarney cycling club won, Niall Somers from Worc second and Richard Barry from St Finnbarrs in 3rd,Kevin Keane in 4th. I came in 7th overall, 3rd M40. the field has gotten tougher every year, but no CX race is never easy anyway.
St Finnbars are hosting next weeks race in Novartis in Ringaskiddy, should be a great race.

Hoping to do some CX this year, skipped last year, was woeful year before! Anybody any recommendations for non bank account bursting wheels/tyres. Have a Caadx (disc) with two concrete blocks for wheels that need replacing! Hoping to do Oldcastle & Navan races
