Hi, I'm looking at joining a gym but I notice that they have a minimum term of 12 months ofr a DD option. My My issue is that I may be moving in a few months. Can gyms be flexible with this?? Is it something enforced?

Our local gym (Aura) had an offer - 3 months free then you could pay for 3,6 or 12 after that, thought it was excellent, have seen similar in others, who's going to commit to 12 months without some sort of trial period????

Is there a council gym near you? I know they do shorter terms with no signing up fee. Also have a pay as you go option.

It does not matter what you sign you can cancel the DD anytime you want. If you are moving anyway at the same time they won't even be able to post out a red letter to you. If you don't move then you can stay in the gym.

Yea, don't follow this advice. You can cancel a standing order but not a DD. Well you can try, but the gym can push it trough, bank hasn't a whole lot to do with it. Check the contract for any clauses regarding moving. You might be able to cancel if you move X miles from the gym. Why not ask the gym?

Nope. If you cancel a DD with your bank, the gym cannot get that money from your bank account.

They may chase you for it themselves though.

Yeah, you need to change your bank because all banks in Ireland let you cancel a DD & the gym can NOT push it through. Your bank might require X amount of days notice before the next payment is due but they will cancel it. In fact BOI let you cancel a DD online with the click of the mouse.Once canceled the gym can't push anything through as you have to give permission before any money leaves your account. Cancelling the DD revokes any permission given

Remember it's your bank & they are there to protect you & act on your behalf & not a third party

    Hi OP.

There are a few contract-free gyms around, like Flyefit: http://www.flyefit.ie/

Where in the country are you?

    No.

You used to not be able to cancel a DD but this was changed - under SEPA I think? (happy to be corrected if this is wrong).

A huge amount of people dont realise it has been changed though, maybe they dont remember the old days where you couldnt cancel!

    You could always cancel.

Now with SEPA, you can claim back your last two monthly direct debits of gym membership (or anything) with no questions asked.

    Ah thats the SEPA angle.

It used to be extremely difficult to cancel. You used to have to write to the payee and have them cancel from their end, obviously it wasnt in their best interests to comply so it would drag on and on.

http://www.bhaf.ie/ are based in Sandyford, if that's close to you.

You can just pay monthly with no contract.

Thanks, I'm in Dublin City Centre, and I've a preference for somewhere with a pool, but I might just sacrifice that for somewhere like Flyefit

Try Club Vitae Health & Fitness Club, Cardiff Lane - Dublin Docklands, Clayton Hotel, 10-12 Cardiff Ln, Dublin 2, D02 YT21.

They have 3 month memberships, 11 visit passes (you buy a card for 65 quid and get 11 visits) etc. They have a pool and good opening hours.

Check out the Markievicz Centre, near Trinity. I’m not sure what membership options they have but it’s connected with Dublin City Council so they’re likely to be flexible (if you find out, will you let me know?)

FYI: They have excellent facilities and a pool.

Just walking past Trinity’s gym: they have a sign in the window to say monthly memberships available.

    Great gym and pool

The Swan Leisure Centre in Rathmines. It's 7euro for a day pass or they do 3 months and 6 month memberships for 150e and 250e. A year membership is only 360e though or you can pay 30 a month. I've been trying it out lately and the gym is decent - power rack and a squat rack, some floor space for DLs etc., dumbells, machines (don't really use these but there are a good few), 5 or 6 treadmills, bikes. There's also the pool, sauna, and steam room so it's pretty good value.
