End of September +/- 10 days. I’d wait, you’ll have the choice of shiny new models or save a bit on prices dropped existing models

Also looking at getting an iPhone

I wonder what the stock levels on the current iPhone X model are like. Apparently there won't be many around once the new models are released.

Hoping I might nab one just at the right time.

Read an article on iClarified last night, and the suggested date for the announcement event is September 12th.

Rumors of a big delay this time around due to the screens.
Also apparently the bezel sizes are huge on the 9.

Same story comes up every year. It’s then blamed for low stock levels which drives demand

Expected announcement is Tuesday 11th Sept
    Pre-Order Friday 14th
    In Stores Friday 21st

Lots of noise about delays (TSMC Virus etc) and the usual leaks etc have been a lot less that previous years.

Not sure if this is a joke... aren't the bevels all disappearing?

I read a rumour the bezels on the 6.1-inch won't be quite as small as on the current X, but not "huge".

Huge is a bit of an exaggeration. But they aren’t going to be as minimally small as the bezels on the 5.8” and 6.5” OLED models.
This is, from what I have read, because the OLED screens have the ability to curve at the edges which allows them to do some trickery in mounting them into the frame which simply isn’t possible with the more rigid LCD screen.
I’d expect this means they can use this to “hook” the edge of the OLED back under itself in some way that lessens the need for a bezel beyond the visible part of the screen, but honestly that’s just guesswork on my part. (A naked OLED display is a bit like a plastic screen protector.)

This video shows fake models of next month models and he's normally very accurate.

The 6.1 inch LCD will have slightly larger bezels but in no way could they be described as huge.

So is there no indication there will be a new iPhone X that will be the same size (or smaller) than the current X?

The current iPhone X is already too large IMO.

There will be a new 5.8 inch X, yes. It seems it may replace the current X entirely, so probably a very minor upgrade.

A smaller X-like replacement for the SE will probably arrive eventually but not in September as it would hurt sales of the higher priced models.

How much do current models usually drop? Is it small enough €50 or so?

Have a 6S at min and would be interested in the 8 I guess.

    Thanks

I’m pretty sure this won’t be the date of the Apple event. September 11th is not an option for obvious reasons. Supposed to be the Wednesday 12th, but your other dates for preorder etc seem spot on.

This is Apple though, and although they usually stick to roughly the same time frame things could change and the event could be a week or two later. The invites usually go out in the next two weeks if the event is on the 12th.

John’s usually right on these things. In the tweet replies he settles on the 12th as Surely Apple can’t harp on about a magical device when the whole country is remembering 9/11

Yes, the current iPhone X size is being replaced.

I would not call it too big, it's smaller than the current plus and just slightly bigger than the 8th.

Once you use one of the larger screens you quickly adapt to it and find all others too small.

Have a plus now for almost a year and could not go back to a smaller phone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,584 ✭✭✭✭Creamy Goodness

I'll be going for the smaller phone. the way the plus models make you hold your phone (maybe I'm alone in this) is really causing me RSI issues. The way I hold it is in my right hand with four fingers gripping the left hand side, thumb for the display and baby finger tucked and curled to hold the bottom edge. I don't get RSI when I'm using our test iPhone X in work or my 6S, only the 7 Plus.

I think the current gen iPhone X is the sweet spot size, the keyboard is much nicer to type on too compared to the plus the keys seem bigger on the X.

You’re not alone. I was told by my physio to get a smaller phone. Apparently it’s quite common. I was using pluses since they launched them. Started getting terrible cramp in my wrist/carpal tunnel about 18 months ago. Switched to the X when it came out and it cleared up within a couple of weeks. Thought I’d hugely miss the larger size but I don’t. Wouldn’t go back now.

    "Don't hold it that way!".

Just kidding, it's all personal of course but I love the size of the Plus.

I hold it similar to you without problems.

Best about the plus is that the screen is perfect for videos with it's 16:9 ratio and no notch.

Thinking of getting an 8+ when the new phones come out. Have the 6 at the mo. Will there be a huge price drop? Will the 7/8 series be discontinued?

This year could be a bit different to previous years, with Apple rumoured to be releasing 3 iPhone sizes, dropping the current iPhone X from the lineup too. If it’s true, this would be unusual as they usually keep the previous phone around at a slight discount.

So there’s a chance the same could happen with the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus. If they do keep it around, they usually drop the price by around €100 or so. Sometimes they stop selling certain versions of the phone though (eg colours or storage capacities).

I have read one or two rumours that they will keep it and have the lineup with the SE, iPhone 8/Plus and then the three new models. Supposedly the new 6.1” lcd phone would replace the 8 so there could be an even bigger price drop then usual if that were to happen.

This is all just based on rumours and speculation though, keep that in mind.

Sounds reasonable. As I'm currently on a series 5, it might be time for an upgrade but the prices last year were a bit eye watering for the X.

Things are starting to pick up nicely with the leaks about the new iPhones this year.

Apparently they're going to be called the iPhone 9(6.1inch LCD model) iPhone Xs(5.8inch OLED) and the iPhone Xs Plus(6.5inch OLED)

The renders that have been produced are looking pretty awesome.

Naming them iPhone 9, xs, xs plus makes perfect sense to me. I’ve a sneaky feeling they will drop the numbering next year but this seems right.

I wish the dual sim iphone 9 was available here. It would solve so much problems i have with carrying two phones.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 3,793 Mod ✭✭✭✭eeloe

The numbers will go next year for sure, or else they're going to have to go with the 11, 12 and 12 plus...which will confuse a LOT of people.

Really excited for the Xs Plus, the bigger screen will be amazing, i'm so used to the plus sized models from the 6 plus, all the way to the 7 plus.

In relation to this surely it's time for the old tech of SIMS to be replaced with embedded sims or some way of logging into networks. I don't see why there are needs for physical cards in this day and age.

Xs won't be used, it's way too close to being pronounced iPhone excess, as much as Apple wouldn't want it called that it will be. I still hear iTouch and iWatch regularly enough.

If the whole e-sim thing is adopted here, that would mean that the cellular apple watch would finally be available here.

Now when it is available, i really hope they don't charge what EE are charing in the UK, an extra £20 a month.....which is just crazy!

I was thinking this as well.

Exceessive this, excessive that, excess cost etc.
It's far too much open to abuse..

XL might be the way to go.

I'm thinking they'll go somewhere closer to the Apple Watch. not Series 1,2,3 but more like iPhone X (2018 or 2nd generation). But no one knows but Apple and the only way it'll leak is via Apple :)

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Entertainment Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 22,693 CMod ✭✭✭✭Sad Professor

For the sake of a slightly better camera and processor, they might just stick to calling it the X. Especially if there's a price drop and 3D Touch is replaced. They will have enough to talk about with the X Plus and the 9.

They really should work at simplification of their products. It used to be easy to tell the difference between everything. Now we’re heading towards Xs iPhone that’s not actually small. Adding to that but the iPhone 9 coming out 1 year after the iPhone X is even more confusing.

I hope dropping 3D Touch is just crossed lines and something only on the LCD model. I think it’s one of the more under appreciated parts of the iPhone, and I use it all the time.

Where did you see that pricing? From what I understand it’s the following:

“Once you've paired your watch to your iPhone, you can add a 30-day plan, which you can buy through the Apple Watch app on your iPhone.

It’s free for six months with unlimited data, then 10GB a month for £5 a month.”

Unless you’re mixing up the £22 a month for 24 months when you get the watch on £0 up front. That’s just their financing plan to cover the cost of the watch.

Only problem I see with that is that it'll be pronounced iPhone ten two. It looks nice on paper/pixels, not so much in the pronunciation.

Agreed but I find despite Apple's policy that people are calling it by the letter X rather than the roman numeral.

Looks like it, but it will probably be replaced with a software-based solution that replicates most of its functionality. iOS 12 will already replicate the trackpad functionality by long pressing on the spacebar.

I have my 6S for 3 years now and was intending on upgrading to a 9 in September/October but if 3D touch is gone then I'm out and buying a Samsung. Apple haven't made enough changes since the 6 and removing one of the best features is a backward step so I think i'll be leaving Apple after 8 years.

I like 3D touch but it wouldn't be a deal breaker for me.

I think iOS and iPhones have a lot more to offer over Samsungs than just 3D touch.

I don't really trust Everything Apple Pro, he's good at doing renders, and regurgitating rumours from Mark Gurman, but generally Gurman's sources are generally wrong or are a bit muddled up about the details especially when it comes to the marketing of things (like names of products etc.).

He's not bad though and he did get the naming of "X" last year.

In ways I prefer not to know though, makes the presentations more interesting.

Still lots of leaks in Apple and its manufacturers.

The X naming was gotten by a developer (guilherme rambo) who found Apple had a beta version of HomePod firmware on a publicly accessible url. EAP just reported this news, if Apple didn't have this firmware up the name wouldn't have leaked through the manufacturers. Apple have been worse about leaks themselves lately than their manufacturers (HomePod firmware leak, iPhone 7 twitter ads releasing early etc.).

He's good, I'll watch a lot of his stuff but not all of it.

Whilst I agree it's better not knowing the details, not knowing how Apple will sell the story of these devices is still a secret which I find has taken the place of what I find most interesting about the events.
