I linked to this in the LON thread but is someone at RTE on a wind up? From the country that gave the world Yeats, Joyce, great music and poetry our culture is now defined by among others: bag on head man, Louise O'Neill, Saoirse Ronan, Ruth Negga? (I've no idea either) and, of course, Oona Doherty, a contemporary dancer that no one has heard of.

We're in much bigger trouble than I thought.

Pretty much none of those have had any impact positive or negative on peoples lives.

It's just typical media sucking up to their own pals in the media/entertainment worlds.

There's plenty of far more famous Irish people than any of those names mentioned you need not worry this country isn't that short of talent.

Don't click on that link if you're on a data plan, just lots and lots of pictures of smug faces.

    Ivan?

If you are gonna bemoan not knowing current artists, try and get the names of past ones, you hold to a higher regard, right?

I've only heard of about 5 of them. The author obviously wanted it well stacked with women.

I just scrolled through the photos, no interest in reading about any of them.

It says defining Irish culture "right now", so I think Yates and Joyce would probably be a bit erroneous on that account.

I think the mistake RTE made is that that all of these people may or may not be well known in Ireland, very few of them would be well known outside of Ireland. At least outside of their respective fields. I've certainly not heard of most of them and I've lived abroad for ten years. Otherwise, they just define local media.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Oh wow he made he made a spelling mistake! And you spotted It! And whats more you pointed it out! You totally destroyed his argument. Poor bastard almost got away with it too.

Nah, don't flatter him. His 'argument'/rant has not interested me at all. He can carry on until he lies exhausted on the floor for all I care about his 'argument' :)

74%-26% gender split. That's disgraceful, we need a discussion about this and maybe some funding.

Even then they're not known outside of their specific fields. How many people could name Ireland's biggest contemporary dance act? Really like.

I know, I'm just showing how ridiculous these people look when you compare them to past figures.

I'd say a lot of them aren't even known outside of metropolitan Dublin circles, for example the Opera singer and the two designers.

These kinda lists are standard Sunday supplement fare throughout the world and down the years. At best they're entertainment, mostly for the circles a goodly chunk of the named tend to run in. When you look back at previous such lists you find the majority are if the "where are they now?" or "who were they?" sort with one or two having any lasting impact. Of that list someone like Saoirse Ronan is very likely to be one of those.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Most of them are very successful in their respective field of media at the moment. Who in Irish media do you think should be there instead?

Seems like a good list of people to me. I like the ones I recognize and must keep an eye out for the others.

What do you mean respective field of media?

It means the fields of media in which they participate.

What do you mean respective field of media?

Some of them work in film, some in theatre, some are novelists, playwrights etc.

Who do you like that you would have included instead of the ones listed?

A last word here, it really is pretty pathetic to be critical of a list of defining contemporary cultural people when you don't know who Ruth Negga is. You would have to have been culturally asleep not to know, at least her name.
Ruth Negga? (I've no idea either)

Pipe down old man, your generation had your turn. If culture is measured by things you have heard of then it would be a very short list.

The people climbing Croagh Patrick would have no interest in this sort of thing.

'Oh my god, what a complete Aisling' is culture?

When I hear the world 'culture', I reach for my gun.

    Can't think of anyone

So you haven't read a book, watched a film, gone to the theatre, listened to a podcast, watched TV or anything similar involving an Irish person that you liked recently?

Looks like you're in no position to dispute that list anyway.

Well, of the top of my head, I'd say Sinead O'Conner, Brendan Gleeson, Cillian Murphy, Roy Keane, Eoin Colfer, Graham Linehan, and maybe to a slightly lesser extent, Dara O'Briain and Graham Norton. Id hav added Louis Le Broucquay (spelling?) if he was still alive.

EDIT - thinking of more: Colin Farrell, Neil Jordan, Jim Sjeridan, Leo Vandrakar (like him or hate him) Colm Meaney

One other point: you may or may not actually like their work, but that doesn't mean it's not a good answer.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

I don't think you are qualified to be getting upset so.

Not that it was worth getting upset over in the first place.

Alex Anyaegbunam really defines Irish culture. You might know him better by the name Rejjie Snow. He had a massive hit with the song Informer a couple of years ago.

Neil Jordan, Sinead O'connor, Colm Meany, Jim Sheridan, Graham Linehan would all no doubt have made that list if they had done anything at all in recent years. But they haven't.

No idea what Veradker or Keane has to do with the arts. Did you read the article?

Ruth Negga is to Irish acting as Old Mister Brennan is to Irish sliced pan.

So why isn't Old Mister Brennan on the list?

(And the pretentious might like to note that a well made sliced pan is a work of art.)

Don't tell me you've never heard of Ruth Negga? She along with other members of her family were in massively successful rap band Neggaz With Attitude.

I wouldn't consider myself uneducated or closed off from the world but honestly I hadn't heard of half of them. Maybe I am a bit of an uncultured buffoon after all. :o

Emmet Kirwan - Heard of him but know he made a film.
Louise O'Neill - Heard of her. Journalist I think.
Lisa McGee - Never heard of her.
John Gerrard - Never heard of him.
Saoirse Ronan - Yep, famous as fcuk.
Domhnall Gleeson - Yep, famous as fcuk.
Sally Rooney - No idea who she is. Never heard of her.
Oona Doherty - Never heard of her.
Blindboy Boatclub - Heard of him but was totally unaware that having a Spar bag on your face added to your cultural achievements.
Rejjie Snow - Never heard of him.
Mary Nally - Not the foggiest who she is.
    Jill and Gill - Who?
Aoife McArdle - Lads, who are these people?
Fatti Burke - Again, not a clue.
Barry Keoghan - He was good in Love/Hate.
Doireann Ni Ghriofa - Naaaa. Never heard of her.
Aisling Bea - Saw her at the Cat Laughs festival this year. She was good.
Nora Twomey - Never heard of her. I have heard of the Cartoon Salon though.
Stefanie Preissner - Heard the name but no idea who she is or what she does.
Jesse Jones - Nope. Not a clue who she is.
Ruth Negga - Yep, heard of her. Good actress.
Emer McLysaght and Sarah Breen - No clue who either of them are or what they do.
Tara Erraught - Never heard of her.
Sharon Horgan - Yep, fairly famous actress, funny woman.
Donal Ryan - Not a clue bud, sorry.

You can tell I've nothing to do on a Sunday afternoon. :D

I clicked on the hilarious premise Stefanie Preissner would be included. The comedians at RTE didn't let me down.

From the country who brought you Yeats and Wilde, heres some clown who wrote a steaming pile of 5hite called Cant cope won't cope.

The RTE website is 1 giant clickbait/WUM fest

She was in World War Z which is the highest grossing horror film ever........I think.
