For those using tvheadend this post seems to hold a lot of information about how to achieve various ends. It is written from an Ubuntu point of view but the methods should be universal.

    https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2336566
    Summary:
This howto will mainly focus on installing Tvheadend (external Ubuntu package) and get different types of DVB tuner hardware functional with their diverse antenna configurations (cable / terrestrial / satellite Universal LNB+diseqc 1.0&1.1) and tuner specific firmware/config challenges so basic features as channel streaming/recording can be accomplished. Although Tvheadend will run on most closed/simple/slow Setopboxes, even RaspberryPi's, Synology nas or other embedded hardware they're far to slow/inaccessible/divergent to build new kernels on(with newer media_tree tuner support) or even crosscompile software for (not impossible but a lot harder) or even write a complete howto for. Since there are so many combinations of Tuner, CPU architectures in cable/satellite/terrestrial Setop-boxes world, most of them running a diffrent linux or posix flavour OS, Ubuntu is my personal and maybe most compatible intermediate OS compared to redhat(centos)/fedora that runs Tvheadend(also supported by Tvheadend Developers) on (older)hardware most people will have (PC/Notebook/Server) and is easy to interact/debug by keyboard*mouse/monitor with USB/PCI-(E) tuner hardware.
