Anybody any idea about this. The ad says it’s the most dangerous tv show ever but because of no disclosure agreements they can’t say anything about it.

Probably a marketing gimmick for something crap but I’m already hooked.

Perhaps they're bringing back Horse Racing!

Hopefully they're going back to their roots-Quality independent programmes and documentaries, instead of the left-wing platform they are now.

Yeah I think it's Sacha Baron Cohen's new show. It's on next Sunday on Showtime in the States, so I'd say Channel 4 have the rights here.

It's called "Who is America" and the details are very vague (deliberately, apparently)
“We’d like to tell you about a new comedy that’s coming, but we can’t,” Showtime teased in its video. “The creators won’t let us show you a scene, the lawyers won’t let us tell you the name of the star, and we can’t even reveal the show’s title or we’d be breaking our nondisclosure agreement. So how do we promote perhaps the most dangerous show in the history of television when we’re not allowed to show it? **** if I know.”

Hmmm, so given his history of making a fool of political 'stuffed shirts', I'm guessing there's a better-than-good chance Cohen has inveigled himself into interviews with Republicans, Conservatives - maybe even Trump admin. folk?

Oh my, to think he might have blagged his way into an interview with Trump himself, got the man to open up, "Access Hollywood" style :D

Starts on Channel 4 on Monday, 16 July at 10pm according to The Independent.

You can be sure that he'll interview the kookier elements of the left too. Maybe Jill Stein or Linda Sarsour. He does well with those without a sense of humour or irony. I'd say he could get an interview with Al Gore and have him look a fool.

Speaking of the new show, there is some speculation of the characters that will appear. He was caught out a while back with a character called Dr Nira Cain-N'Degeocello.

While there's layers of jokes already in the name, the twitter bio reads:
Proud Democrat. Lecturer on Gender Studies at Reed College. Co-Principal at Wildfields Poly-Ed. Stay at home Male Mom.

He hasn't tweeted much besides retweeting Clinton, Sarsour, Jill Stein and other assorted groups but there is this gem:
So moved to see the world come together for #WorldOtterDay. When Malala and I adopted Lenin and Marx from our local sanctuary, we knew we could provide a wholesome life for these intelligent gender-neutral mammals.

There are also some books available on Amazon with such titles as "Immoral Toddlers" and "Being Food: Living life in the Food Chain". In the section about the author, it contains the following:
    About the Author
Dr. Nira Cain is a prominent voice in a progressive movement. Dragging the 21st century into the 21st century by challenging tired positions & offering unique insight into the lives of the under-represented & misunderstood. Nira is a leading figure in liberal politics unafraid of speaking his mind & standing up for those who need it.

I've loved Sacha's work since the 11 o clock show and I'm expecting good things from this.

This comes pretty close to Brass Eye if you ask me:
The science behind this program is proven. At age 4, a child processes images 80% faster than an adult. Meaning that essentially, like owls, they can see in slow motion. Children under 5 also have elevated levels of the pheromone Blink-182, produced by the part of the liver known as the Rita Ora. This allows nerve reflexes to travel along the Cardi B neural pathway to the Wiz Khalifa 40% faster, saving time and saving lives.

Reminds me of an area of the brain called Shatner's bassoon.

That's what I was thinking. Brass Eye holds a special place in my heart but this looks pretty good too.

I'm a big SBC fan, back from the days of the 11 o'clock show. There isn't much that he has done since that I haven't liked. In this modern day of easily offending people, I'm excited to see him pushing the modern day boundaries, that preview looks great.

Airs tonight, going by this it could be good.

Guessing Chris Morris is involved too going by above

Obviously the gun piece was the strongest element of the episode. I thought the weakest (by a huge margin) was the "artist" sketch; I say sketch because the woman obviously knew what was going on.

All-in-all it was good - very hard-hitting political commentary - but not all that funny.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 66 ✭✭stormthecastle

Its going to be one season only I guess?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,503 ✭✭✭✭Also Starring LeVar Burton

I thought it was good, much better than I had expected it to be, especially the final segment of the episode - the magic is obviously in how the unwilling participants react to Baron Cohen's characters, because the characters themselves lack the charm or likability of Ali G, Borat, or Brüno, and the prosthetics are awful despite obviously managing to fool people.

The political pieces are quite funny, but the convict artist character is a bit random.

Looked like it was set up(as in a sketch with a actor)

I'll start this by saying that I know humour is subjective, but this is leaning a little too crass for my liking. What exactly is the hard hitting "social commentary" here?

The conspiracy theorist in me is also wondering are the "victims" paid actors.

I think Brass Eye / Chris Morris did satire a lot better than Cohen.

Well the gun advocates are real enough.

Thought that was very hit and miss.

Bit like a lot of his comedy. Nice to see people who are very easily fooled. But we know a lot of Americans are daft, we are learning nothing new here.

Seen it all before. Don't think I'll bother tuning in to the next one.

It would have been hilarious if the artist had introduced himself as Bobby Sands.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,405 ✭✭✭nc6000

That wasn't great but maybe it was because so much of the episode was already on Twitter. With some of the sketches I though the "victims" were just being polite and humouring him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,342 ✭✭✭fatknacker

This is a bit cringey. His jokes and acts and skits just seem incredibly dated. Not hitting any buttons for me so far. Just trying too hard at this stage. And seems quite scripted from his 'targets'
Plastic make up is incredibly obvious. I was hoping he'd be more subtle at this stage.

Lots of toilet humour too to keep those who are into it interested.

He's doing what he's always done and found it slightly humorous but not belly laughing - hope it gets better.
Skits are too short for my liking or maybe that's the best funny bits out of a much longer segment which would be quite sad when he can do better

His makeup was really obvious I thought, so I'm guessing if you were actually there in front of him it would be more so.

And as a result, each guest should really have been thinking 'this is fake'.

Bernie Sanders was exactly as you'd imagine.
    Trump couple were resiliently polite.
Curator was extraordinarily full of sh!t.
Gun advocates were bizarre and shocking. Interesting how easily they agreed with absurdist extremes of their views.

I thought it was very funny. Definitely worked better when the characters propel the subjects along in their craziness like in the latter two segments. Just clowning really when he parodies opposite positions like in the first two, but still funny.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,076 ✭✭✭steve_r

I'd agree with most on here. Thought it was very poor.

    Bernie - very tame stuff.
Trump couple - they came across as polite and he's character was so bizarre that it was unbelievable
Art Curator - pretentious and a bit silly but not really a "bad" person. His character there was poor also.
Gun rights - probably the only shocking one of the whole lot. Plastic makeup was very obvious though. This was the only one where he got people to say something really stupid.

Overall, Brass Eye did it far better, and some of the american comedy shows like the Daily show, the opposition etc have done a far better job of revealing that side of America already.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,276 ✭✭✭bobbyss

Quite boring I thought. We've seen it all before.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,734 ✭✭✭✭Penn

The show as a whole was disappointing alright. His characters almost seem too outlandish to the point where it's hard to believe he'd be able to genuinely fool anyone who wouldn't already be an easy target.

The only good bit was the gun bit, which was definitely striking to watch rather than just funny. Hopefully see more of that ilk as the show goes along.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,076 ✭✭✭steve_r

This weeks episode was a lot stronger. It's got the Dick Cheney interview which is unbelievable. A new character comes in as well (that looks like Ted Danson).

The liberal character has a much stronger scene this week
