Diesel-head looking to convert

Hi everyone. Looking for a bit of advise. After reading alot of information on this forum and internet I have myself almost convinced that my next car is going to be an ioniq but now I need some help deciding on weather to go ev or phev.

Currently I have a CC 2.0 diesel that I got when commuting 200km/day. Recently changed job location so my commute now is a total of 20km each way with a drive of 100km (return) 2-3 times a week. Have ability to charge at work (I think, just have to look into it a little) and own our own house so no problem putting in charger there.

Almost definitely going to go to England and bring back an premium SE model because I love my comforts and gadgets and having brought back my last car from there too I'm comfortable with the process.

So now the only decision I have is whether to jump completely to electric or break myself in gradually and get a plug-in? All ideas, suggestions welcome and if any questions please ask!

Ioniq EV suits you perfectly as would a second hand Leaf 30 if you want to reduce the budget, you won't need to charge at work either (if you can then that's a bonus).

Don't like the look of the leaf. Still "young" so the sportier look of ioniq appeals to me!

What's the budget? The new Leaf looks a lot better than the old one.

I have similar needs to you OP.

I have learnt a lot from Boards.ie, now almost an expert, lol, on the various EVs.

The next year will be an interesting time, with hopefully more mainstream electric vehicles becoming available such as the Kona, Niro and new Leaf. And probably at a later stage the Tesla model 3.

The Ioniq and Golf are hard to get at moment, unless you are prepared to travel.

Like yourself I don't like the last model Leaf, my teenage son said he would disown me if I came home in one..

New Leaf is already for sale. Kona should be in the showrooms very shortly for delivery early next year. Niro should also be next year but most people don't expect to see any Model 3 on an Irish reg until 2020

The year after that maybe some new models from VW and BMW

There is still not an awful lot happening in the EV sphere :(

with your profile pretty much any recent EV would work. I think it's primarily down to personal preference and what deals you can get. So based on that I'd get test driving and see what you personally like or don't like.
One thing to note is that there is not that much difference between the Ioniq Premium and Premium SE. differences are
    1. Leather
    2. Cooled seats (both have heated)
    3. Power seat (drivers only) with 2 memory settings
    4. Warning light /beep in the wing mirrors for changing lanes.

    And front parking sensors.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of hybrids. Carrying around a petrol engine kinda goes against the reason I went electric in the first place. BEV should suit you down to the ground with your driving needs.

    And front parking sensors.

Thanks for that! Just went out to my car to find them...... Never noticed the button and had it switched off......

Before Mad_lad gets in with the i3 sales pitch I might as well get in the eGolf pitch :-)

I guess by CC you mean Passat CC? any reason not to look at the eGolf? a few knocking around the UK. Even the older 2015/16 model would suit your requirements. The new model would give you that extra bit in regards to range.

Just worth a look. Liffey Valley have their demo model 2017 up for sale at the moment. Decent enough spec.

Simple reason of price tag and I think they are smaller than ioniq? Will take ioniq and egolf for test drives and maybe leaf too. If any of them can fit golf clubs in boot comfortably I'd be sold!

    +1

Try take them all on a 24h test drive, drive your normal routes, test if the people and the equipment fit. Then see what's available at what price and then decide. Good riddance to the diesel :)

So I haven't got much of a chance to examine the different chargers, charginh cables etc so looking for some advice from ye. I have attached a picture of the plugs available at work and I was wondering are they compatible with any of
    1hF2nV
    6hQDF5

Others may know from those the pics but I'd need to see under the cover(s) to be sure

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,821 ✭✭✭Silent Running

The blue one looks like a vehicle mounted power IN. No use to you. The other two look like some kind of specialist plug that I haven't come across before.

A normal 3 pin square outdoor socket would do, or one of the blue commando sockets. You would then need a patch cable from commando to 3 pin square.

Failing all the above, a dedicated EV charger. :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,639 ✭✭✭✭ELM327

None of those are compatible with your EV.

It's there any app or website where you can type in milage, current tax and insurance etc to see how much switching to electric will save you?

Nissan used to have a thing....you could put in current car and then in new car to show savings

I done it up myself manually

Still looking at upgrading would swap in morning if funds were available. Saw a few new leaf lately and in fairness they are a big improvement on the older leafs. Test drove the ioniq phev and it was great! Still fixing between plug in and electric. Sales man was really pushing plug in. Is there an app that can track your trips? Thinking of doing that for a couple of months to see how often if ever I go over ioniqs range

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31 grange girl

I have a golf phev, love it, suits me perfectly as I do long return trips every fortnight but do all my daily driving on electric - about 30km city driving.
If you need to research if you will ever need to drive beyond the range of the car, buy the fully electric car. Otherwise you are paying for (and paying every time you drive) to carry around a petrol engine that you will rarely use. If your longer trips are that rare, you could hire an ICE for those trips. Honestly, it's a no brainer.

I notice you mention earlier on that you're interested in a sportier type of car. Definitely test drive an i3. Ignore the looks, its probably the best performing car short of a Tesla in terms of acceleration and handling.

Oh no it isn't (pantomime style) :D The Kona is noticeably quicker and handles just as well, as most BEVs will with the low centre of gravity.

I tested both a short time apart and could directly compare. You don't have to live with fugly to get the performance. :P

Oh yes it is! Panto continues, although as I've had fun pointing out, I've the older, original BEV only i3 - that minus the weight of the Rex and the denser newer batteries will go sub 7 seconds to 100kmh (Kona according to official figures 7.4)

But I haven't test driven the Kona ev yet to do direct comparison, I'm sure I can easily walk into a Hyundai dealership though and test one and have a great supply of the cars ready to go.

Probably worth watching this. Is the i3 prone to the same sort of low-speed wheelspin that he experiences in the Kona? That aside, he's quite positive about it overall.

I've never hear the wheel spin he gets in that video but if you are in Comfort mode (i.e. max everything) and you floor it from low speeds the front can get a bit jiggy but it is rear wheel drive. Is the Kona rear or front?

EDIT: I am referring to an i3 Rex

Kona is front wheel drive. It can get quite torque steery (it's a word :D) under full power, but the wheels didn't spin, for me anyway.

Just been doing our sums this morning might look to change in the new year.

    160km a dayx5 50% motorway 50% traffic + toll fees at least 1 way 2.90
Currently have 07 Jetta D so €80 a week at the moment

5k grant still work if going UK? Is it VRT?
ioniq looks best if model 3 not likely till 2020

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 66,122 ✭✭✭✭unkel
    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

You only get the €5k SEAI grant if you buy a brand new full EV in Ireland

You can bring in most EVs from the UK with zero VRT

You're unlikely to be able to get base Model 3 until 2021 if you have not been on the list

Ioniq / Leaf 40 / eGolf / i3 33kWh will do your commute. Go test drive all of them and see which you prefer and decide based on your budget and availability of the cars. All 3 of them will save you thousands a year in fuel alone!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,808 ✭✭✭✭Water John

Also Unkel, throw in the company buy option for some along with zero BIK. Add Kia Niro, demo models arriving.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,512 ✭✭✭OffalyMedic

So update is : I've a price got from local dealer for my Passat CC and I'm going looking at a Ioniq EV tomorrow and all going well will have purchased by Tuesday. The OH is very skeptical of going full EV and I'm starting to have doubts myself now too that maybe the charging network isn't good enough yet. Will I be restricted in the journeys I do. What if I do my 100km trip to home place and back and then have an unexpected journey somewhere? Cold feet big time!

Also with this Ioniq tomorrow when driving it what should I check/do on the drive. I know it has 2 cables as in t2 and granny.
    Do ioniqs have spare tyres?
Has had 2 services how do I check if has current update?
    What is the latest update?

    Thanks everyone

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,808 ✭✭✭✭Water John

If you're somebody who could be on call, you might need a bigger battery than the present Ioniq. Great car though.
Are the present Kona or the expected Niro out of your reach?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,512 ✭✭✭OffalyMedic

Not on call only work shifts but in normal life you could be caught to do unexpected journey and although it might only be a couple a year I'd be terrified of no range or what if like storm last year the electric goes for a number of days? And the v12 draining the battery and locking people out of cars etc all give me the fear / anxiety/cold feet!

Edit: yes Kona and NIro well outside budget unfortunately

You're like my double! I too have a cc, looking to go ev. Ioniq might suit, and Kona / niro are out of budget. Mind is blown.

Well if the OH and yourself have 2 cars, one could be EV.

2 cars I'd say go ahead but the Ioniq certainly doesn't have anything like the range where one car family could go EV with the current charging network.

Kona if you got the money has a lot more range.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,512 ✭✭✭OffalyMedic

OH has a diesel but has said to me he won't be bailing me out if I "forget to charge" or "run out" etc. But we always use his car for long drives anyway. And I'm sure he loves me enough to not see me stranded ....well I hope he does anyway 😂

That's the thing. Run out of diesel and you can have a can in a few minutes. Run out of battery..................

2 car household, having one be an EV is a no brainer imo. I'm the only one who drives in my house so I'm a bit anxious about making the switch too but I'd have no reservations whatsoever if we had two cars.

Bringing OH for test drive tomorrow too so will go from there. I'm about 75:25 in favor of going EV atm

Ioniq is grand in a one car household, there is enough infrastructure available today to make it viable with minor compromises.
Of course it really depends on where your family are etc. If you live in Dublin and all your family are in Dublin, you are basically golden.

I'm a one car EV family for almost a year, no issues. Ioniq. Been to Kerry a couple of times, not seen the bad side of "the network". All my charges on the network have been good with the exception of Cashel, the CCS plug was goosed.

I live in Dublin, everything else I do is well within range. 95% of my charging is at home. I think this is the use case we should promote and larger hubs with multiple fast charge points for people on long runs.

If OH has a diesel, go for it. You'll smile passing every petrol station esp if the OH pays the ESB bill.

Update: test drove car today and am almost convinced I'll be an ioniq owner by Tuesday depending on bank loan coming in in the morning
