The cost of take out coffee.

I usually get a coffee at lunch, as I like to get out of the office. I had no issue paying 2-3 quid for a normal Americano until I calculated the cost.

If I bought one every day I was at work, it will cost me a weeks wage per year.

I'm only a grad, so don't earn much but WTF.

Yeah it's an awful lot for a regular purchase

I used get a venti vanilla latte in Starbucks every morning.
When we started saving for a house, I knocked that on the head and made my own coffee at home. Saved an absolute fortune.

Get yourself an aeropress and make some nice coffee for yourself.

Dont do those annual add up calculations it'll just make you sad

Coffe is a nice little comfort that gets me through my workdays

You should picket outside the coffee shop until they lower their prices.

Just get a hand grinder and an aeropress for your desk. Better than most coffees you will pay for.

An example from when I was in college someone asked me about quitting smoking and would I not save loads of money. Yeah I would have saved about €40 a week. Then I pointed out the tenner a day she was spending on coffee. :pac:

Most of those take out coffees are glorified laxatives at best anyway.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,221 ✭✭✭✭m5ex9oqjawdg2i

If there's a kettle at work then I would take my own coffee in, you can buy a really good quality coffee which will last you a few weeks. Even some of the instant coffee is better than the crap you get in a cafe in Ireland.

in my office, it was €1.20 a couple of years back, now its up to €1.60.

Couple of decent coffee places around the corner and frequent them a few times a week., prob 10-15 euro a week.

don't buy coffee at the weekend really, have a nespresso, but agree if you are drinking a lot of coffee, you can go through a lot of cash very quickly.

Coffee was free where I used to work. Everyone was on 3 or 4 a day. Probably cost them a fortune

    Any good instant coffee suggestions?

    From google

8 oz of coffee makes 41 (9 oz. cups)

8oz of coffee can be got for about €4 so 10cents a cup.

Its the likes of Starbucks that are making a fortune with their Black Gold.

Make your own. If there is a hob at work, use a caffetera.

Yeah but think about how much it enhances your professional image when people see you zipping around town, coffee in hand and phone to the ear like the young go getter we all aspire to be, the optics are hard to put a price on, almost as important to your career prospects as your BMI

Or rob them and get your money back with interest

And let’s not forget that caffeine is an appetite suppressant and can help your BMI, although it can make you need a gick though, taking you about the BMI optimal of one movement a day.

It’s a tough judgement call when your career is at stake.

    Kenco Millicano is nice.

Only time I pay for coffee tends to be in the new independent cafe at the top of my road. €3 and it's excellent.

In work we have a decent coffee machine... just got to refill the beans!

I'd sooner go for a pump type machine where you use bags of ground coffee or grind your own from beans.....
    4553120_R_Z001A?$Web$&$DefaultPDP570$

I have one of them and a capsule machine, if I had to just have one I'd not have the capsule one. Capsules aren't cheap and they are wasteful enough too from a materials viewpoint.

2 coffees a day at €2.50 each. Assuming; 5 day week, 20 days off in the year so 48 weeks of coffee =

    €1,200.

BUT WAIT we are not done yet! That's €1,200 of your NET wage. Lets assume you earn €30K a year, you have to earn €1,392* to pay for this! 4.5% of your salary is going on coffee!

*Please note for the tax calc thingy I used the first site that popped up, may not be perfectly accurate.

First they came for the socialists...

I usually just buy a tin of Nescafe Azera or Nescafe Crema (courtesy of the office petty cash) and it is so much more delicious than the crap they sell in the coffee shops. Plus it lasts a good few weeks.

In saying that though when I worked in Dublin I used to frequent Il Fornaio on Dame St at least three mornings a week. Their coffee is insane and it is quite good value for a large americano with hot milk (€2.60 or so it used to be) that you could sip on all morning. But yeah I was on rubbish enough money at the time and spending about €40 a month on coffees.

Have your coffee at home. I've a Bialetti Moka pot and it's fantastic and so much cheaper.

I've cut out a lot to save money over the years, bringing in my own lunches, walking/biking it to save on public transport, cereal at home first, but I can safely that one thing I'll never stop doing is buying a nice Latte after lunch at work, it gets me through the afternoon and I'll be damned if I go near that instant crap.

I have a fancy coffee machine at home too but I'm no longer at home after 8am in the morning so it's fat use to me in the afternoon.

There's a youngish guy who, every other day, drives down John Rogersons Quay eating his lunch on his lap, while driving a BMW soft top. Either that or he's on his phone doing stuff. Obviously too busy so has to multitask.
I'm only sorry I have not taken a video of him yet and posted it online.

Feck no, they are the worst thing ever and the amount of wastage is shocking. They have been banned in all public buildings here and for good reason.

You could get a bean to cup machine, Amazon have the Delonghi Magnifica on sale regularly for less than 200 euros.
Even cheaper and handier for work is an "Aeropress". You can buy ground coffee in most coffee shops or online for about 8 euros.

It's a big machine that actually made good coffee so I'd say the people who were leasing the machine made a fortune while the company paid a decent chunk for the pleasure. Keeps people from leaving during their break though so you might end up talking with colleagues in the canteen and accidentally do some work during your break

Bought the stovetop espresso maker in Lidl for a tenner a while back... now enjoying really good coffee in 5 mins whenever... won't be doing the 2-3 euro per disposable cup very often now.

afaik as a business you can also offset its cost against tax.

The takeaway coffee tastes horrible in most places. Convenience shops are the worst, they have the espresso option blocked off so all you can get is some murky brown flavourless liquid.

Bargain for them so everywhere should do it. Like giving all your staff a thousand euro bonus if they would be having to pay for takeaway coffee every day

If you spend e.g. 2.50 on unit of the black stuff, assuming 5/7 and 47/52wks (holidays etc), sure you're only down €587.50pa. (excluding their overpriced food items).

Wait, that's nearly enough for a nice weeks holijay.
Triple that if you get a sambo.

Its take-away coffee, yanks, or do ye drink it on the sidewalk as well?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 564 ✭✭✭shakeitoff

Terrible value for money. Why do you want to buy something just to stroll around with it. Going for a nice coffee and sitting down and having a chat is well worth the money, racing around with a cup in hand coffee overflowing is not. I spent so much in UCD but was a decent outlet while studying and a nice chinwag

Buuuuuut breaking it down over the course of a year is stupid. Does anyone buy coffee literally everyday?

When I started my new job a couple of years ago I started making my own lunch and coffee.

The amount of money you save is outrageous - about €150 every month.

I reckon I'm up about €3,600 so far.

You just have caffeine addiction. Go cold turkey and after a few weeks you won't be as tired all the time.

    Coffee sucks. Should be banned.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Years ago used to just use quality grinded coffee (not instant) straight into a cup, a good stir and wait 2mins to settle.
Not bother with all that fancy equipment, sure you'd waste time preparing and washing it.

Yes it's a bit gritty at the bottom, but use a pint size cup and just fling that into any plants/garden to enjoy.

At least coffee from the SU shops in UCD from insomnia are only 1.50, reasonably priced and i think it could be cheaper with a reusable cup

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55 ✭✭Tacadh

In college the amount of money I spent on coffee was absolutely insane, especially around exam times. In the weeks leading up to exams I could easily have been buying 2/3 cups a day. Granted, a lot of the time it was the cheap filter stuff which was €1.50 a cup but a lot of the time it’d be from a local cafè which could have been 2.50 or even 3 euro. I easily could have been spending €30 a week on coffees which is genuinely just insane.

Next time you hear an ad on the radio saying something or other costs: 'Less than the price of a cup of coffee a day'.......think on, what they're really saying is: 'It's going to cost you a small fortune'

From the Irish Idiomatic Barter Ready Reckoner - Dublin Edition:
1 Cup of coffee to go = 2 Limbs to go (an arm & and a leg)

The Aeropress is the most overrated piece of crap I have ever had the misfortune of buying.

I even made sure to have the correct temp water and tried the inverse method and all sorts of other pretentious bollox.

Coffee was disgusting. Nothing but a glorified French Press.

    The Nanopresso is far better.
