Coincidence of same song playing on two different stations

Last Wednesday morning a bit after 7:30am whilst on the road in the south of the country I happened to put on 4FM, playing was 'Don't stop me now' from Queen, I went on to cork 96fm and the same song was playing (sounded like just a few seconds difference),

What are the chances of that happening ?

This was not something in the charts recently, I don't think there was any reason that this song (it was released as a single in 1979) was more likely to be played that morning?

This happens very regularly!! nothing strange about it

Radio shows sometimes have a list of songs they can play. The lists would be quite similar.

Not hard to do, seeing as that 2002 song is almost on repeat on most stations.

Same happened the last month/6 weeks on the 2 local cork station's 96fm and red FM

I'd say the odds of flicking around different radio stations and hearing at least 2 of them playing Ed Sheeran is VERY high at present.

Happens ALOT, mostly on 2fm, Today FM with some new chart nonsense. Would say it's fairly rare to happen with oldies like Queen.

While we're here, does Annmarie have some kind of contract with Irish radio? Not only do they play her song every hour all day, but they seem to talk about her every chance aswell.

I've yet to hear this AnnMarie one, whats the song called?

Irish radio has a habit of jumping on the next big Irish star bandwagon. She must be it?

Don't think she's Irish ? 2002 is the name of the song, and the one played for 5 months solid before that was called FRIENDS. You post a bit on radio here so I'd be very surprised if you haven't heard it 20x times

I'm sure I've heard it.....she's English and its co-written by Ed Sheeran ffs!

Edit: checked it out.....and yeah I've heard it ok.

I have Q102, Sunshine and Nova preset on my car radio as the music selections - it's almost guaranteed that at any time one (or even all) of them will be playing Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith or one other act whose name escapes me right now. They're almost literally just permanently on!

Notice it lots with 98FM and FM104, almost daily.

    Her father is Irish

    re op

Most radio stations use a playlist of a set number of songs. These lists are generated by researchers , it would not be all that strange to have stations with similar target audiences playing the same songs thoughout any given day/week.

It must be some sort of weird coincidence. Because Ed Sheeran gets about 6 songs every 24 hours on Sunshine, and Sam Smith less than that. You could listen for hours and hear neither of them.

Well I'm not in the car fulltime or anything, but it's absolutely incredible the amount of times I switch around between music stations and that's all I can find playing!

I think that explains it. You said "permanently" before.

Back in the 1980' s when I was on Radio Nova and Tony Fenton was on Sunshine we used to deliberately do it.. attempting the get it beat for beat we'd start song at exactly same time. This went wrong sometimes as Nova used speed up some songs!

Publistists (?) probably pay for them to talk as if their client is the next big thing.

I had 3 stations playing Adele's Someone Like You at the same time.

Not that hard I suppose as the song was almost on repeatfor 3 months.

Someone make the Ann Marie stop, it’s becoming torture now. What is the obsession.

It's #3 in the Irish charts at present. 2002 is also a very radio friendly song.

There was a post on here a few years ago by someone in the industry that the average listener to music stations listens for 20 minutes, hence the CHR stations playing the biggest chart hits on 2 hour rotation or whatever.

Does this ever happen to anyone here?

I remember listening to radio one night a few years ago.

A song came on, and I loved it, thought it was really great, funky, retro sound. I thought to myself "better listen out to this, see who it is when it finishes so I can hunt a copy of it down cos I might never hear it again on the radio".

It was Uptown Funk by Mark Ronson/Bruno Mars.......and lets just say I think I've heard it enough to last me a lifetime!

Well the Annmarie 2002 I must have endured listening to it 2002 times now. It’s far from a radio friendly track. They could use it for torture at this stage.

I would be fairly confident if you looked at the requests on 96FM it would be one of the most requested songs although the frequency at which it's being played will drop soon as it's been on the radio for 2 months now.

Anne-Marie will probably release a new record soon anyway given the success of 2002 so they'll likely play that instead then.

It was a lot better than when they had Adele on 90 minute rotation. Redefining depressing.

Do daytime radio presenters have any say in what they can play any more?

Not on the commercial stations anyway, it's almost universally playlisted. Even the request shows are playlisted in most cases

I wish Annemarie would leave me a alone and let me live my life. It feels like her songs have been played on heavy rotation for ages, like since 2002. Irish radio seems a mess at the moment playing the same safe songs again as to not alarm anyone. It's a pity they couldn't Do it Right.

On commercial stations they basically haven't had for 20 years. One song a show for a gimmick is one occasional reason, e.g. the awful pun thing on 2FM is unlikely to be playlisted (although its possible!)

'Requests' are picked to match what is already selected, or people are actually asked to say a specific track to get the shoutout bit of the request on air. People don't actually *need* requests anymore anyway, its not like radio is the only way to hear a song outside of buying it now.

Specialist music shows, evenings and weekends there is still much more if not total freedom.

Dancing on the hood, in the middle of the wood...
    Just sayin'.

Every time I hear it, I do the maths.
She was 11, it was 2002, 16 years ago, so she's now 27.
