I'd like to see England do well, Southgate is a good manager and deserves a return for his hard work with an average squad of players.

I'd normally watch an England match over watching Ireland play

Get behind them for the next two games, then we can enjoy the glorious tragedy that will unfold.

I’m behind everybody. Everywhere without a telly is lovely and quiet!

Should be a worldcup every year!

I suppose if they won it we would hear about 1966 a little less. A little.

Nope. I'm your typical football fan, I watch the PL religiously but by jaysus I'll be cheering anyone but Engerland.

    I like Peru

I'm cheering for England obviously, but I can see why near neighbour's wouldn't want England to do well. I'd be the same had any of the other home nations or Ireland qualified, seeing Wales do well in the Euros was crushing :pac:

The good thing with England, whether you like or loathe them, they dont usually tend to hang around very long in tournaments anyway.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

Not a ****ing chance in hell.

Having to listen to their fans hum along to the Great Escape theme.....

I'm going to be controversial here and say that in a England vs Ireland match, I'd rather England win!

[let the hate begin, let the sweat of your rage fill a pool which I shall bathe in and soak up the pleasures of euphoric ecstacy and.............]

Ok that went WAYYY off on a completely different tangent than I had intended!

The funny thing is I couldn't care less about football (I refuse to call it soccer cos soccer just sounds dumb)! But yes even I know we're not in the World Cup...

The most likeable England team in years, relative though that is. If they play well, best of luck to them. If they play like they're in treacle, as they tend to at big tournaments, they'll get what they deserve.

But whatever you do, watch them on RTE.

15 seconds of ITV is enough to make me want them to be crushed, and that's not the players or manager's fault.

I like the bit where they get everyone's hope's up...itv news is full of pubs with roofs painted with England flags (why  ) and interviewing morbidly obese middle aged men in england jerseys

And then they lose and the media pile onto maybe 1 person who made a mistake and cost them the match. ...but might have 100 perfect performanes before that :D

    Why?

Why should Irish people support England?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,935 ✭✭✭eyerer

The only two reasons I can think of:
    1) A wind up
    2) Virtue signalling how progressive one is

Like someone said, I probably wouldn't give a toss only we have to hear about it for the next 50 years and counting..

We still drone on about making a quarter in 90, playing some of the worst football ever seen in the tournament on the way.

You never hear the Nordies harp on about 1958, when they made the same.

At least the English actually won the bloody thing.

Because we support Manchester utd Liverpool etc etc bla bla bla.

    I'm sorry there's a big ****ing difference!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,935 ✭✭✭eyerer

I don't watch the RTE coverage any more but if they really go on about the quarter final that's embarrassing. I defo wouldn't be bragging about it.

However, throughout my lifetime any time an English person hears the year 1966 they have to mention England won the world cup, even if it's an old woman who hates football..

They - the decent ones, of which there are way more than the tossers - get behind us on the rare occasions we're involved.

It's hard to believe sometimes, but there are way, way more sound English football fans than there are Ing-er'land vindaloo dipsticks.

Do you remember when England last won the World Cup?

Well if you do....can you tell me...what was it like when everything was in black and white?

    So what?

Still doesn't give any reason for Irish football fans to support England.

Having read on boards it seems some English people still think they rule Ireland. So of course they support one of the home nations :pac:

I think if they are going to win we will have to get behind them - and stand between their goal posts.

PLease add "football" to the title so we know NOT to open it...

    Steel city derby?

There's a very nasty rivarly between Wednesday and United.

Sheffield is a real rough city.

They probably went mental because they couldn't bear to see snooker players in the crucible theatre sinking balls.

    Sheffield United 1 - Steve Davis 250,450.

Nevermind the primal simpleton game of 'kick leather ball', which country has the best WAGS?
Suspect it's a toss up between those South America countries, and the Ruskies.

Iceland would seem an obvious choice for people here to get behind.
