Thought I'd post this here as I know that a few of the posters here currently have their own personal website.
As you may or may not know, Chrome is going to mark all non https sites - those starting with http as not secure starting in July .
So from July users will get a message stating that the website is not secure and hackers are going to steal all their money if they proceed or words to that effect.

I recently purchased the loughlinstown.ie domain with the intention of moving my loughlinstown.com site to that and this provided a good reason to go ahead. It was not as hard as it seemed at first once I had it all figured out, so I thought I'd share the knowledge a little.

I'd recommend checking does your hosting provider supports "Lets Encrypt", if they do, and many do, you can convert your site from http to https with the click of a button and not have to pay any thing. The only caveat is that unless you have a dedicated IP, shared IP https may not work so great on older operating systems like Windows XP (yes some people still use that).. If you consider that an issue ( its not worth the expenditure for me personally to buy a dedicated IP for the five or so visitors to my site still on XP!) then you'll need a dedicated IP.
I moved my site to https://www.hostens.com/ (generic link, I don't get anything for promoting them) based on some reviews online and the fact that it does have Lets Encrypt built in and is dirt cheap :D

If anyone has any questions feel free to ask, it took me a little while to get my head around it all but in the end the move was actually very painless.

I'm already with let's encrypt - a guy hosting my site arranged the whole thing quickly and smoothly. Well, I didn't even notice that! :D
