Someone hanging around the house at night.

My parents live out the country side, theres a few houses dotted around the area but mostly surrounded by fields.
A couple of times over the years ive heard noises outside the house, like footsteps, things being dragged/moved and noises in the shed. Id usually put noises outside down to wildlife or wind but some times the noise has been so obvious the only explanation is someone outside.

This morning at about 4.30 I went down stairs to use the bathroom. The bathroom is an extension part of the house, outside along the bathroom/extension is a long narrow path with an old wooden gate that leads onto a patio. While in the bathroom I clearly heard someone running down the narrow path, push past the gate and run around the extension onto the patio which leads onto the side of the house. Then the noise stopped.
There is no clear view onto the patio from any window in the house so although I looked out and saw nothing, I cant see the whole area.
I thought I heard a noise earlier in the night and went down to make sure the back door was locked as my parents have a habit of forgetting to lock it but walking past windows in the house I got a chill and feeling of being watched.
Allot of the windows down stairs are quite big with no curtains or very light net curtains so if someone was outside, they can see right in but because its dark, I cant see out.

A few weeks ago I heard noises like mams ceramic flower pots beside the front door being dragged. - Its directly under my bedroom - its a two story house.

Nothing ever seems to be missing from outside the house and there never seems to be any attempt by who ever this is to get inside the house.

Im just wondering if anyone has experienced anything similar? What could they be doing? and is there anyway from stopping it from happening?

While typing I can hear a bit of banging coming from the back of the house.

You need to go down with lights off. Then you'll be able see out.
Make sure you go alone in the skimpiest of sleep wear and open doors very suddenly for dramatic effect.

Maybe it's your mum or dad trying to scare you into moving out.

Had a very similar issue years ago. Turns out that a neighbor liked to do some lurking at night.

A dog and lights on sensors sorted it

Or else he doesn't know he's dead and is looking for something to support the weight of the car.

Well if he thinks plant pots will do it, no wonder he's dead.

Thats so disturbing. Did you catch them doing it?

It has to be someone local because its happened too many times.

I'm picturing quite a large, cement plant pot, or else why would the apparition have to drag it?

OP I had endless trouble with a lurker at one rented house. A disgruntled old neighbour ... May be that. Wandering round at all hours, moving stuff

And yes, sensor lights are a must.

This one got aggressive and we had to involve the Gardai and it would be a good idea to go down and tell them anyways, please. A very good idea.
There is too much rural crime as people do not report strange happenings.

But I am betting on an old neighbour .

OH and get a really strong torch. When you hear stuff, get to the window nearest and ON

You don't want to be dragging one of those plastic ones. The weight means that they're liable to crack upon movement, but your man, the ghost, let a car fall on him so common sense may not apply.

They were running pretty fast like, it couldnt be an old person, the only neighbours close to us are up the road and theyre a really nice middle aged couple that run a farm.
I went down stairs to have a look out the back door and the wooden gate is pushed open. I might say it to the gardai, never thought of reporting it, didnt think theres much the gards can do but youre right, its a good idea to report it anyway.
Im going to get sensor lights this week, I usually brush off the strange noises, convince myself im hearing things but this was definitely someone outside, ive no doubts about it. I nearly sh!t myself when i heard them running.

Good! And the Gardai need to know as you might not be the only ones being visited. We criticise the Gardia but omit to give them the info they need.

Old folk can be strong; our lurker was over 80 but destroyed a metal gate, set fire to bushes, threw a gas bottle around. Pulled great branches off trees to block the drive..And he would walk miles.
Turned out he had an ancient right of way grudge and had been using the house when it was empty .

DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR when this is happening. Please.

Get the lights and go and see the Gardai.. Please.

It's like a scene from a fillum. Sensor lights are installed and so far, so reassured. Until one night soon after, you think you hear sounds and go to look when suddenly the sensor light comes on and there is someone in a mask looking straight at you!

    DUN DUN DUNNNNNNN!!!

It might even be a good film.

    Maybe not for you....

Get on of those Trail Cameras from Amazon. They take a photo when they sense movement.

Oh my god, thats terrifying, are you ok? What a complete nutjob.

Id never open the door, I was scared to even leave the bathroom incase I saw them out the window.
About a year or two ago we heard something, my mam decided to go outside and check, left the door wide open and walked around the house to see who was there. Since then I dont bother telling my parents when I hear a noise until next day because they'll go outside. - we could have all been murdered lol.

    I am fine!
BUT I called the Gardai EVERY TIME he attacked. This was deep rural. And I finally left . He started using my drive as a toilet!!!!!!!!

One time when the Gardai went to see him, he attacked THEM ! But they would not arrest an old local man..

The old right of way had become defunct years before and his solicitor told him that but he still tried to clear it; set fire to the bushes and nearly took out the ESB cables..

There will be some story behind your lurker. Something long ago... some grudge.

Shake flour or sand along all the paths around the house, then you'll see the footprints, (or paw-prints, or whatever it is) next morning.

Thats crazy, i cant believe the gards wouldn't do anything, he sounds dangerous.

Nothing's ever been damaged and it doesnt happen every night, just every so often. They could be lurking around other houses too. I dont think we've had any problems with any of the locals, cant imagine any of them holding a grudge  I hope not anyway.
