What is this place like to live? Is it as dangerous as many claim it to be and should it be avoided?

I'm looking at possibly moving to the housing directly opposite the basin street flats.

I'm not familiar with Dublin so would appreciate any feedback.

If you want to live in an area full of junkies, scumbags, people screaming at each other in the street, generally anti-social behaviour etc... then its the place for you. There's a reason staff in St. James Hospital are escorted to their cars at night.

You'll have people coming on here telling you it's grand. But compared to most areas it is significantly worse as in it must be bottom 5% of places to live. You need to weigh up if you can put up with the locals in return for the closeness to city centre amenities

Think the other reply is a little over the top but there is a lot of anti social behavior'.
As is usually the case its the young kids that are the problem,it all depends on how you react to them.
New hotel and apts going in at the old canal basin so someone sees potential in the area.

You can move slightly towards the Quays and it's much quieter.

It is an absolutely terrifying area IMO. You should come up some day and walk it. I did one day because I was trying to persuade a friend not to buy an apartment in the area. By the time a random taxi picked us up I was afraid for our lives.

But other people will tell you it's lovely around there.

Lived there 2 years and happy that I moved out, I didnt feel safe in there. Youngsters from basin street flats can be very aggressive, throwing eggs, potatoes or anything at people or windows for fun. They regularly burn all sort of stuff in the local playground. Also a big drug problem, kids from flats work for drug cartels.

You need to be really careful in the evening.

I can't post links, but you can find articles about drug seizures, stabbings, gunshots, machete attacks, fire brigade being thrown stones at or man being abducted and crucified at Basin Street flats.
