    will WIFI calling work with a wifi range extender or does the signal need to come directly from the router?

    Yes it is an excellent service and works for text and voice on Wi-Fi extenders. It also supports HD Voice and allows free roaming outside of Europe. 

    However, low-end WiFi extenders do not have "roaming" or handover between access points. Hence you may need to re-connect when moving between WiFi access points. High-end mesh devices such as Google WiFi can handle handover seamlessly.
