After the snore festival that Barcelona was, we might not see many overtakes again.

I always find it hard to be enthusiastic for the Monaco GP, it's an awful race to watch on TV. Still, with the chunky kittensoft tyres and all the extra downforce I suppose the lap record will be smashed this weekend. I can only hope for some excitement in the F2 races or some Grosjean madness in the F1 race

    My favourite GP

I still do not know why it is considered the Jewel in The Crown of F1 ...maybe once upon a time.
it needs Rain or stupidity to make the race interesting . Will probablly watch the first 3 laps and leave it at that unless there is chaos

Qualifing is always interesting here , Was it last year Hamilton was having one if his off days and Vandoorne crashed just before the clock ran out and F-up Hamiltons only decent run .

I think it's great, it's sort of bonkers to be racing the highest performance cars in the world around the twisty streets of this town by the harbour. The race isn't always the best but often it does deliver some very memorable moments. You're almost guaranteed one or two drivers will put it in the wall or try and force a pass. It was always a track that Jordan had a chance of getting some points at or getting some sort of upset with the results

It's an epic race weekend to attend. On TV, the race anyways, is awful. Even when it rains there's little on track action apart from drivers sliding off. To be there is just something else, though!

For the race I'll watch the first few laps then do stuff with it on in the background to still soak up the atmosphere. :)

Yes it was. The Merc with its long wheelbase was not great around that track last year and the same in Singapore but Hamilton got lucky in Singapore when Vettel F-up his and a few other drivers race.

A few talking points from FP1:
Red Bull fastest, Ricciardo and then Verstappen. Some Ferrari & Mercedes sandbagging for sure but Red Bulls look quick.

Max made a really poor decision after going deep into turn 1, he reversed on to the track instead of spinning around. He's likely to get a slap on the wrists and a reprimand if not a penalty of some kind.

I saw pictures of Vettel's kittensofts after 25 laps or so, they had massive graining. They have work to do to find a solution for that.

And Sirotkin had a puncture after hitting the wall on the start/finish straight. :D Great choice Williams, great choice.

Well not a whole lot happened in FP1. The biggest thing was Max Verstappen destroying his front left tyre with a lock up and then reversing out unto the track from the run off so he is under investigation by the stewards for unsafe entry onto the track.
Romain Grosjean was quick around the track. He got 9th place in it and touched one of the barriers with his front tyre then went very hard over the kerb which is lower than it used to be. If it had of been a little higher its likely he would have lost the car and crashed it. One of the williams got very close to it too. It was Lance Stroll. Pierre Gasly lost the rear end around one of the corners a little bit but the slightly raised kerb saved him and he recovered the car.
    So no crashes yet.

Great description! It was really extreme graining

Depending on the durability of the ultra soft, we might see now some interesting tactics.

Keke Rosberg taking his 1982 championship winning Williams FW08 around the track:

Seems like the kitten soft are too hard for more tactical solutions.
RedBull look mighty. McLaren&Renault best of the rest. Haas struggling but a very compact midfield. 0.6 sec cover position 7 to 17

Hypersoft good for just 8 laps in race conditions according to the Merc boys.

So I came in to see the session had stopped and thought damn it I have missed a crash have I. Lookaly I had it recording as well but then found out it was only a drain cover problem on the track.
Riccardo set the fastest lap of the session otherwise not else happened really. A rather boring session. Still glad I was able to see it mostly live do. Am looking forward to FP3 and qualifying.

A lot of praise for Leclerc from Hamilton. He said it was great to see such a great talent come into the sport and he has been watching him come up through the lower formulas and into the sport.

The Channel 4 coverage looks really good this weekend. Can't not wait to see Karun in the 1982 Williams of Kiko Rosberg and the chat with Riccardo by Lee Mckenzie.

Bottas had a small mistake in FP3, he overshot the corner and went to spin the car around and clipped the back of the rear end against the barrier.

Also Grosjean is on the radio again having a moan about the car, the traffic and everything else in between

Forgot to add, the Red Bulls are seriously quick. Going to be a ding-dong battle between them two for pole

Mercedes not really hooking it up. Bottas slower than one of the Williams

Verstappen crashing. With such a fast car that could really mess up his qualifying and race

That was a massive error, wasn't just a brush against the barrier. Fool. Might get away with it though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,566 ✭✭✭✭Ghost Train

    Hopefully repairable before qualifying

...and that's the yearly "Verstappen puts it in the wall in Monaco" taken care of this season as well :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,904 ✭✭✭✭skipper_G

Herr Marko giving Max the look :D

Again Max gets the balance of risk versus reward wrong. I sometimes feel this is the kind of behaviour he would have outgrown with a couple of seasons in lower formula but can't change that now. Hopefully he doesn't need a gearbox penalty. The shunt didn't look too severe at the rear

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,904 ✭✭✭✭skipper_G

EJ randomly turned up at the end of the C4 show for FP3 even though he's not on the coverage. The face on Karun as he tried to hold back the laughter was priceless and EJ with "is that it?"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,904 ✭✭✭✭skipper_G

Just watching the piece on C4 about Grosjean, the last time he scored points was Japan last season. The last time he scored more points than KMag in a race was in Belgium last season. He is definitely under pressure for that seat

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,906 ✭✭✭Joeface

Was it Gunner what ever his name over Haas
Said Kmag gets in the car says it crap and drivers anyway, he can compensate .

RG on the other hand it just feeds his negativity and spirals downwards

Has Max gone a full weekend without contact this season?

Australia he had a big spin in the race in turn 1, damaged his floor and lost a few places. He ended up 6th behind Alonso.

Bahrain he spun into the wall in qualy, they initially blamed the engine for applying 150 extra HP before they retracted and confirmed it was driver error. And then he unnecessarily clashed with Lewis on lap 2, had a puncture and retired.
(Edit: I remembered something about the extra HP being crap, thought it was the team but wasn't it came from Renault so I'm unfairly projecting an opinion to the above statement)

China he was on to challenge for the race win before he hit Vettel trying to overtake him, ended up 4th before a time penalty for that crash dropped him to 5th.

Azerbaijan he and Ricciardo crashed and wiped each other out.

Spain was pretty clean aside from damaging his front wing when he clipped the back of Stroll under VSC. Still had a podium finish.

So the answer is no, he hasn't had a clean weekend without a spin or contact of some kind

Confirmed gearbox change for Max, so 5 place penalty.

As the track started to get quicker you can see the front 3 teams just moving ahead. Before that it was changing constantly, at one point Sirotkin was quickest.

Verstappen finding out that Karma is a bitch.
He screws his teammates chances a few weeks ago and now with a car capable of winning the greatest race of them all he will start at the back of the grid.

    Loving it. :D
