Slow paced RPG - Aliens and Cyberpunk

Looking to get players for two games run at a slow pace*. Both are Sci-Fi. One based heavily on the Aliens films and the other with a cyberpunk noir feel (Blade Runner-ish).

Both games are self-contained, not campaigns, with a specific end point. I'll run the alien game first and then the cyberpunk one.

No previous experience with RPGs required.

*Slow pace means 1-3 posts per day per player. The Alien one will be a little faster than this at the end.

I know this very much depends on the players but any idea how long the campaigns would be Four?
Would potentially be interested in the steampunk one.

I'd be thinking about three-four weeks or so. Although depending on what people do, it might be only two weeks.

Which one would I possibly get my sword back in?

The alien one, possibly the cyberpunk one (though it'll be illegal in more places there).

I'll throw my name in for the Aliens one.

Is there any chance Mr Humphalgrumps can appear in these settings? If yes, sign me up!

Pter won't be playing Tom Berenger in this game, so no flirting by proxy.

Flirting by Proxy is still my favourite Tom Berenger film, after his turn as The Dean in 'Pubescent Fist'

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,558 ✭✭✭✭Fourier

So that's Banjo, Evade and possibly Pter, and then possibly Molly for the cyberpunk one.

    That's enough for me.

I'd be looking to start Monday then.

What rules system are we using or is it a more free form thing?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,558 ✭✭✭✭Fourier

Rule system will be Traveller (2008 rules).

When we played 1E D&D, we used Labyrinth Lord, which is basically a free version of 1E with some balance issues fixed.

For this I'll be using Cepheus Engine, a free and cleaned up version of Traveller's rules.

    I'll pm it.

Traveller however is quite free form for the player (most rules are for the DM).

I gave a short description of the core rules here:

Im good for both to be honest. Too much time on my hands. Just not sure whether there may be party/ size restrictions.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,485 ✭✭✭✭Banjo

If you want size restrictions, play F.A.T.A.L.! ;)

I was hoping to sign up to both too, but given the cookie cutter nature of my "characters", well... it's the DM's game and he's already suffered through 1 round of Traveller with me in it so I'll leave my fate in his hands.

No and that*is* helping! Trust me. Some things you cant un-know.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,558 ✭✭✭✭Fourier

Alright so Evade, Nebelwerfer and Banjo for Aliens.

    We'll use the chargen here:
    http://www.munsondev.com/chargen/chargenname.php

Just to explain some things about skills. In Traveller, in general, if you don't have the skill for something, you either can't do it or run a strong risk of failing, depending on the task. An example might be Pilot, without the skill you just can't fly a starship and you'd run a strong risk of failing things related to it like knowledge checks or knowing the typical layout.

    A roll is 2d6 with a target of 8.

Skills run from 0-4 typically, indicating what gets added to your roll when we check something related to that skill.

Some skills have subskills, e.g. Drive has Walker and Tracked for example. A rating of "Drive 0" counts as a rating of 0 in all the subskills, but after that they are leveled individually.

If you get the Drive skill or any increase in a subskill you can swap it out for Drive Walker if you want, as Walkers are a bit more common on this planet than in typical Traveller.

PM the output of the chargen to me.

Any questions about the character generator just post here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,818 ✭✭✭Evade

    Do we copy/paste the output?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,558 ✭✭✭✭Fourier

Yeah, just copy/paste it into a PM.

Are there any recommendations re skills for the scenario?
Will it be a hindrance if we don't have a broad spread between us?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,558 ✭✭✭✭Fourier

Three characters have a high chance of having the spread needed, most of the bases are already covered by Evade and Nebelwerfer in the sheets they've sent me.

A bit more weapon experience might be handy, but not necessary.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,024 ✭✭✭✭Baggly

Not a chance I'm doing Alien if Banjo is your weapons expert :p

I'm sure you would be a lot fairer than me Banjo, but old leg sword wounds heal slowly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,485 ✭✭✭✭Banjo

You know that these are games? They're not real life?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,024 ✭✭✭✭Baggly

I don't know what tone thats in but fair enough if you don't wanna joke about and let bygones be bygones.

I Iiked your post better before you edited it. Let's take it to PMs for the sake of the children forum.

@four : a bit tied up with family life, will submit a character roll in the morning, no need to wait though as it's probably a sexually aggressive teenage girl who talks to animals in a foreign language, but this time in space. Toblerone optional....?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 468 ✭✭Nebelwerfer

Anything we can read up on in preparation for this or even just for lolz?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,558 ✭✭✭✭Fourier

Banjo and Evade, do you want D&D paused while we play this or not?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,485 ✭✭✭✭Banjo

Personally no ideally. I'm a greedy fecker. But if that means the days will clash and everything gets dragged down, that's a lose lose. You're the DM, what suits you?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,558 ✭✭✭✭Fourier

Running both at once is fine with me, I just know people can find context switching between genres difficult (seen it on Roll20 before) so I just want to check.

Are you looking for any more Traveller players?
If so, I'd be happy to join in :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,558 ✭✭✭✭Fourier

No problem Nimroth. We've an Alien scenario starting later today and then a cyberpunk one after that. You up for one or both?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 123 ✭✭Nimroth

Happy to join the Alien one first and see how it goes :)
A character for the 2nd is done quick enough ;)

So, I send you the character I rolled via PM?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,558 ✭✭✭✭Fourier

Okay got the characters from everybody. Sending on the character sheets in a while and then thread will be up.

I have the core mechanic above. This is just a brief guide to combat. I'll guide ye through the first one, so the below is just for reference, don't feel you need to know it perfectly.

In combat you can either take:
    1. One Minor Action and One Significant Action
    2. Three Minor Actions

Also any number of reactions and free actions are possible.

    Significant Actions:
    Melee Attack
    Ranged Attack
Skill check requiring full attention (e.g. healing team member)

    Minor Actions:
Aiming (+1 to hit roll on ranged)
Change Stance (i.e. switch between Stand, Crouch, Prone)
    Drawing/Reloading Weapon
    Move 6 meters
Skill checks that are fast (identifying weapons on enemies)

    Free Actions:
DM fiat, but very quick with no skills required. Push a button, shout, etc

    Attack:
The "to hit" roll is no different to any other skill check:
    2d6 + Skill + Mod + DM Difficulty Mod

Skill will depend on the weapon (e.g. Gun Combat(Slug) for a shotgun).
Mod is always your Dex mod for ranged weapons. For melee weapons it's either Str or Dex depending on the weapon.
    Difficulty is set by me.

Target is 8 on the roll, like all skill checks.

Damage is given in the weapons stats (3d6 for example), you also add the effect of the "to hit" roll (effect is amount you exceeded 8 by).

    Auto:
In addition to a normal attack, the weapon can be set to burst or full auto mode.
In Burst you add the auto score to the damage.
In Full Auto you make a number of attacks equal to the auto score.

Burst consumes the auto score number of rounds. Full Auto uses three times the auto score rounds.
