    There are lots of these larvae growing on ivy that I want to cut back. I'd like to know if it a beneficial or harmless insect. I could leave the clipping for a few weeks. I'm hoping to attach a photograph.

    Look like scale bugs. They are a pest. Rub them off, or if too many prune the stem off and burn it.

    It's a scale insect of some kind. Definitely a pest. Rub off and spray the plant with a soap solution.
