Ok I went through all the steps. A friend recomended I change my password to something impossible and forget it. I have done this but I am a bit worried they will start emailing me offering to give me a retrieve password option. Apparently all I have to do is get through the next 14 days and then it's gone forever.

Did you announce your flounce first?

Doesn't work properly until you tell everyone you are flouncing and loiter for a while reading their pleas for you not to leave and posting teardrop emojis on your status.

Seriously though. I'm trying to block incoming emails from facebook to my hotmail and I can't see how to do it?

Change your email address on facebook to one you don't use or a non existent one. Then you'll never get back in and they can't email you.

It's well-known that Facebook can be very bad for you. It's obviously very addictive as well, and OP said "get through the next 14 days".

Fúck every waste of space in here mocking someone for saying they're quitting it. You wouldn't do that to someone with a gambling problem.

I stopped using a social media a few years ago now..

It’s up there along with giving up the sauce as one of the best things I’ve ever done for myself.

I still use Boards and one or two other discussion sites but that’s it.

Seems everyone around me is delighted with themselves giving up FB lately but they’ve all just moved to Instagram instead where they’re caught up in the same nonsense and dramas.

It’s like an alcoholic swapping beer for wine in an attempt to stay sober.

I honestly think social media is one of the greatest causes of phycological issues in society today.

Anyway, well done OP. You will feel better for it.

Leaving facebook is the adult version of running away from home, they always come home when they're hungry/looking for attention.

Not sure if the people comparing Facebook “addiction” to actual addiction are being serious.

Addiction is addiction. Only the consequences vary. Some people can be addicted to social media to the point that it changes how they live their life. Continuously checking shít all day long, first thing in the morning, last thing at night. Even when driving. Social skills down the drain and the constant need to be liked. People have even ended up divorced due to social media taking over someone's life.

I heard two discussions on the radio recently, one with a psychologist, explaining how apps were designed to be addictive. Those repeated dopamine triggers.

    It’s ok, we’d guessed.

The paper thin higher morals and need to tell everyone about the great thing you did gave it away ;)

The whole “Facebook is bad for you” is crap.

How people use Facebook and measure their lives to others can be bad, Facebook is just a website.
People need to learn how to assign values to themselves without checking online to see how many likes and shares they get.

If the only way you can progress is deleting Facebook then you’ve got a problem, if you have a difficult person at work what do you do ? Delete them?? No, you deal with them.

    Day 1/14

I'd be lying if I said it was easy. It's a constant feeling of unease, like there is something missing. My scrolling finger doesn't know what to do with itself. Thanks for all the support. I'm doing ok. I expect it to get harder as it approaches dinner time and I will have no way of knowing what people are eating. I just keep looking at my Blue Peter Badge and telling myself I can do this. #feeling strong.

At last count there were 2.2 billion daily active users. That’s not including the other few billion who only log in every few days..

All on a platform that’s deliberately designed to be addictive and keep people coming back for more while being insidiously pervasive and gathering large amounts of personal data..

This level of marketing power is unprecedented and social media is still in nappies..

Facebook is so much more then “just a website”.

    Probably.

What I don't get is the popularity of Facebook. It has to be one of the most user 'unfriendly' interfaces out there. I have three FB accounts, one to block anybody else from taking the name; one which I am inexplicably locked out of and one which I use purely for business reasons. I often wonder how many more there are out there like me - and am I counted as three separate FB users - i.e are FB's figures for numbers of accounts utter garbage?

Boards isn't exactly social media though is it.

    And thank f*ck for that.

That's a compliment to boards by the way.

I deleted my Facebook account some years ago because of an epiphany I had.

Which was: If I'm going to spend this much time in front of my computer, in front of a screen that gives off artificial light, an activity that is sedentary and not necessarily healthy - I might as well put that time to good use. Use it to educate yourself you dumb ass.

In other words, the internet is an interactive encyclopaedia, the likes of which I wish I had when I was young. To waste that time on social media is a total waste of time, technology, and worst of all, thought.

I went through the process of deleting my boards.ie account.

I had just been diagnosed with diabetes and had more on my mind than using boards.ie and risking some plebs annoying me.

Thought I'd done it too, then three months later I was going through my old email account and seen a notification that I had a PM from some pleb on boards.ie

Someone had reported me for something, and someone else wanted to me give a reason and explaination lol.

I should have just ignored it, but I clicked the link and found I still had an open account, told the guy not to bother me, that I'll never give some annon username an explanation for anything.

Then instead of going through the process of deleting my account I started browsing and fooking stayed.

But I wouldn't miss boards.ie for a moment if it suddenly disappeared.

Facebook on the other hand is great for me to keep in the loop with various sports I do, and I love motorbikes and everything to do with them.

Facebook has helped my Judo club to grow & grow.

I use twitter just to promote my Judo, and its worked great in bringing up my profile ~ particularly in work.

I don't use Instagram and all the others, I think they're for younger people than me.

That's a stupid question and you know it. It would obviously be "You raise me up". I wish now that I had recorded the moment live. I lack the acting skills required to recreate the moment. I have applied to Rada but it is a 3 year course, let's talk more in 2021.

The other day I got an e-mail from facebook telling me about eight people that I could "friend" and I couldn't see even one remote reason why. Never heard of them, don't know where they live, one wasn't even a person, it was a concept.

    Also Farmville.

But otherwise facebook is okay in limited amounts.

Reddit is my demon. I spend far too much time scrolling idly through endless subreddits of endless ****e, and yet the moment a thread like this makes me think about uninstalling it I practically have a panic attack. It's very sad. I think I'm going to uninstall it. I'm going to do it at precisely 12pm today.

    Gotta go set an alarm....
