BMW recall question

    Hello,

So I have a 2008 318i, which potentially could be one the cars in the BMW recall.

Given that I bought the car second hand, and that owner got it from Mount Merrion (as opposed to an official BMW dealer), do BMW get the latest details from Shannon? Or do they go on what the dealers have?

    Cheers!

Yes Shannon will give them address details on file for current owner of car and a letter will be issued informing you of the recall. I would also expect they will put a number plate or VIN check on the BMW.ie website so you can check yourself, Toyota did this previously.

    Thanks.

I know someone in one of the Dublin dealers, so I'll drop him a mail as well.

    Are you sure?
Surely this would be a major breach of privacy data for Shannon to release the names and address.

From my experience, Bmw will pull the names from people who have bought new, or have been through the dealer network for services etc and take out media ads as required by law.

I got a letter from toyota about a recall on a privately bought 02 corolla even tho I've never been to a Toyota dealer for work. I doubt they got my details from Shannon because I'd the car sold 8 months before the letter came in the post

I assume BMW Ireland are covering UK imports?

I've a 08 318d myself. I'll be calling the help line if I don't hear from them in 2/3 weeks

I suppose to a degree if it was abused but in the interests of safety they release the data, Toyota got the details, so did Honda, I'm sure others too.
Could my vehicle have been the subject of a recall that I was not made aware of ?

When a vehicle is subject to a recall manufacturers try to contact all registered owners with the assistance of data from the Department of Transport’s National Vehicle and Driver File (NVDF).

Therefore, it is important that the details recorded on the NVDF, particularly your ownership details, are up to date at all times.

There is no breach of the Data Protection Act for recalls. There are provisions in the DPA for relevant information to be made available to manufacturers when they issue an official recall. I think there are safeguards in place so that the information is only used for that purpose.

No it's not a data beach as such. The owner information is gathered and retained for a variety of uses, including safety recalls like this. They are perfectly entitled to use this information for this purpose. It's the exact same in the UK and other countries.

Anyone know exactly what bits are being replaced during this recall?

From the papers, sounds like a connection on the line that brings power from the battery to the fuse box.

    I have UK import - 2009 BMW E90 318D M Sport, am I affected too?
If so - how will they reach out to me if they will be looking for that car in UK while it's been exported?

Same question for me, I bought a 2010 320D M Sport a few weeks back that was a UK import.

As asked above will BMW Ireland be covering the UK imports? Surely BMW as a whole in Europe should be covering recalls, no??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,172 ✭✭✭EPAndlee

BMW will surely have to cover Irish and UK cars. Just wait for a letter in the post, if you dont get one I'd just contact them to be sure.

As if my BMW didn't give me enough problems to worry about

    BMW's  absolute scrap.

Automatic gearboxes made out of cheese, notorious for timing chain failures and now over 300k cars being recalled.

Yet people still cream themselves over 320'd and 520d's

    Gotta love badge snobbery

Lol, Audi fanboys in glass houses really shouldn't throw stones:

    - BMW Gearboxes made of chocolate - I raise you Audi multitronic comes to mind.

    - BMW Timing chain failures - I raise you Audi oil pump balance shaft failure

    - BMW wiring loom recall - I raise you Audi diesel gate questionable emission test figures.

Yet people still cream themselves over which 2.0 diesel A4s and A6s to buy. Gotta love badge snobbery. :D;)

Sure he started a thread on what brand of windscreen wipers to buy (!!) then talks about snobbery. Jasus.

You should be able to phone a dealer with your vin number and they can check pretty much straight away if your car is due the recall

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,360 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

BMW UK and BMW Ireland are the same distributor/company for both countries so I don't see any issue with them covering UK imports here, same as covering warranty work. Even if they were not the same company, BMW HQ in Germany would still be required to issue and cover the cost of a recall especially one that has a safety issue. The dealer will just carry out the recall work and then claim off BMW for the work. BMW Ireland will then in turn claim off BMW HQ I'd imagine.

News report on the radio this morning specifically mentioned that a further [can't remember specific amount] of cars which were imported from the UK will also be covered under the recall.

Just to add my experience of a previous BMW recall :

My car is a UK import which had never been serviced by an Irish BMW dealer. I got a letter from BMW Ireland regarding a recall of the passenger side airbag (the takeda problem I think) asking me to bring the car in to be fixed. It took less than an hour to fix the car, including a car wash while I relaxed in the waiting area drinking coffee.
Being a UK import wasn't a problem and the whole process was fairly painless.

Same, ive got a letter for my Audi saying its been recalled, and its an import and never been in an Audi garage here.

Once youve got it registered here, the details go to Shannon so they have your details.

Cant understand all the drama on a recall. This is norm now, and sums up todays motoring industry. Body Work/Paint is the only reliable thing in modern cars imo.

BMW,Merc so on.... All mass produced engineering buckets of sh$t in the end.

Early 90s Toyota set the bench mark.

90's Toyotas had a ridiculous level of reliability

    What year is yours?

Wondering if they are doing them oldest to newest or vice versa.

Is the 5 series covered under this at all, I got a warning about 2 weeks ago about Electric supply failure and it's hasn't gone away.

2008. Not sure. I emailed them through their site with a few details and then they rang saying 1-2 weeks just wait for a letter.

I spoke to a mate in a main dealership. He said they are waiting for the parts in to do the work and then the service guys will be sending out letters.

Do they get your address from the log book or from motor tax records? Also anyone know if the work involves changing the LCM ? (light control module)

    Email customerservices@bmw.ie
I emailed them early this morning regarding my 2007 116i and was told it was not affected by the recall. Guessing it was actually built at the end of 2006. They replied back in few hours.

Got a letter last week basically saying the car is affected but there's no schedule for applying the fix yet as parts are low in stock.

Outlined symptoms and said to contact the dealer if any were showing up.

Looks like there isn't any major rush on their part to get them done.

    2011 3 series here.

That's strange that you have not got letter yet.

Bought mine from a dealer at end of April but it was a UK import and registration completed at end of April by garage and got the letter last week

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,808 ✭✭✭rizzee

Haven't gotten a letter yet. Approx 4 weeks since phone call asking to wait for one. Car was definitely on the wiring and blower problems list.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,541 ✭✭✭Leonard Hofstadter

Ring a BMW dealer and ask. I had to get the airbag recall done on mine last year, and if it wasn't for the fact I was aware of the airbag recall, I'd never have known about it.

Oddly enough BMW wrote to me after I'd gotten it done to tell me I needed to get my airbags replaced!

This was the process in the UK (I lived there at the time) but I assume it's the same in Ireland.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,808 ✭✭✭rizzee

Rang there, still waiting on parts to come in, said a letter will come - they're being sent in batches.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,363 ✭✭✭ezra_

I booked into Frank Keane, they gave me a replacement car for the time, and they fixed two other safety issues on the car.

No letter in yet from BMW, my local indy told me to be pro-active.

Frank Keane also did a timing chain check (mine passed as I replaced it earlier this year) and said they'd have had to replace it for free had it been loose.

Mine is recalled for two recalls, going to wait for a letter before calling into the dealer

What were the other two safety issues?

Is the timing chain check only for certain models and years? Would not mind them checking mine to be sure

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,541 ✭✭✭Leonard Hofstadter

The timing chain is a potential issue on any car with the N47 diesel engine (no matter what the year is and despite what BMW says about it being 'fixed' after 2011).

The N57 (six cylinder diesel) can suffer but it's far rarer, the oil capacity is much greater and it's under far less stress because they are almost always automatic and of course the superior refinement of a straight six.

I personally would be wary of buying any N47 engined car but would have no problem buying an N57, I personally hate diesels but I could see myself behind the wheel of an F30 330d in time (I definitely want another BMW with at least six cylinders when the time comes to replace mine - but I'll be holding onto my E46 for another while yet).

Just placed a call on my 2012 F10 67k (miles) Full BMW Service history and reported clean and no recalls to action, gotta love that piece of mind
