mate of mine just bought a boat and wanted to bring it into canal system from the sea.The keel depth is 3foot 75 foot nearly 4 foot more than the 3 foot 6 inches or 3.5feet depth of canals

Some sections of the canal are deeper than the minimum limits and with mono hull sailing boat of this type if you lean the boat over you reduce the depth a small amount
So is in the opinion of canal experts is it possible for that mono hull keel boat to do the entire canal system or large sections of it without becoming stuck on the bone yards of the wrecked boats in the canal system

Clontarf YC did a cruise in company down the canals a few years ago, mainly on yachts with masts on the deck. I think they were all lifting keel boats, but you could contact them and ask for details. With the absence of any commercial traffic on the canals, I wouldn't trust any quoted figures and would be looking at a truck with a crane as back-up (or go round via Limerick).

Met that YC on the Barrowline, they told me they were all lift keels, e boats I think they called them

I doubt that it would do the Royal, levels are set at about 1 meter.

    Grand possibly, which is 1.2m

One boat I had drew just under 4 foot and it rubbed the bottom in many a place on the Grand/ Barrowline.

Once met an M boat out by Inchicore a few years ago. They pull around the 4 foot. It was being sailed single handed, with the skipper up on the bow, no one at the helm, and it plodding along in a straight line. I asked the lock keeper how he was doing it, to be told that it was rubbing the bottom and sides, no need to steer.:)

nice one but flat bottom boat with big HP can power over humps more easy but low power deep keel more likely to catch and stick .
I was in newross ysterday and they explained how that river barrow works with tides bridges and the rest and summer low water problems

Looks like even grand canal is very mariginal with 1.2meter versus 3.75 feet which is 1.14 meters just atad under the 1.2 limit

I will contact inland waterways monday to check this 1.2 limit

You might get some quick feedback here https://www.facebook.com/groups/717182844986491/?multi_permalinks=1793679880670110&notif_id=1526114531298585&notif_t=group_activity&ref=notif but to be honest I think the trip will break your friends heart and put him off boating for life :( it might also cost him a few quid if he ends up having to be lifted out.
