Broken Ankle recovery time

I have a distal fractured fibula which is slightly displaced but shouldn’t need surgery. Been in a cast almost 2 weeks now and bored out of my mind and the crutches are a nightmare! I know everyone’s different but roughly how long did anyone spend recovering from a broken ankle?
I’ve to go back in another weeks time, which will make it 3 weeks in cast, and am hoping against hope that they will give me a walking boot!
    Anyone any experiences of this?

I've broken both ankles, you'll likely come out of the cast in 4-6 weeks and start your rehab.

If you're getting rehab as a public patient, don't waste your time. Get recommended a private physiotherapist and pay if you can.

If you've ligament damage its largely depend on the grade of tear, this could take longer than any bone and muscle wastage.

In my experience its really down to the quality of your rehab

Seriously? I’ve no idea if I have ligament damage, is there anyway to know?
There’s a really good Physio in my town but he charges 60 for half an hour and I’m a broke student. How many sessions do you think I’d need?

Well if you had a grade III tear it would have been operated on, so its unlikely you've anything too serious.

€60 for thirty minutes is a bit rich.

You're stuck with being a public patient, just go to as a public patient (you've no choice) but be very diligent in following your physio's advice.

What sports (if any) do you train?.

The frustration on being out injured is the worst part, I train/compete in Judo and when I'm injured and out of training or a competition I wanted to fight I have to fight off a bout of depression every time, no joking.

Just for your info, both my ankle fractures healed completely but I genuinely can't recall the recovery time.

I had a grade III ATFL tear (its the sprain most people suffer when they go over on their ankle) and that kept me out of training for most of a year and out of competition for close on 18 months.

If you had one of these it would have been picked up and operated on at your initial assessment, so most likely you'll have a simple recovery.

    Jesus...18 months is awful!
I run (not competitively) and horse ride - which is how I broke the ankle, horse bucked me off in a gallop and whatever way I landed on the fibula it snapped. I’m already fairly down about all the stuff I’m missing - lots of 5ks and hunter trials events coming up in the coming weeks.
Just have to grin and bear it for the time being.
I might just shell out for a session or two with the good guy If I find the public one crap.

I'm a runner too, and just recovering from another ankle sprain (thank you Judo). Got out for my first 5k yesterday, felt great (four weeks off).

You should be grand, honestly. And it sounds like you've a simple fracture, ranting about it is good too ~ helps get rid of the frustration lol.

Horse riding!.. Fair play, I'm terrified of horses (althought Black Beauty is my fav book).

Best of luck with the recovery, 'ups and downs, smiles and frowns' :D
