Eating for energy

    I need to change my diet as I don't have enough energy. Mid morning slumps, evening slumps, will find myself drifting off far too easily when reading or working at a computer.

    I don't need to lose weight, am physically active enough.

    Basically my diet is an absolute disaster.

    I'm looking for recommendations for a cookbook that someone without any skills in the kitchen can use which will be explained in an idiot proof way.

    What should I be eating, why should I eat it, what should I avoid, sample meal plans, ect all with the aim to maximise energy at least from the diet side of things.

    Any book recommendations?

    Usually the reason for energy slumps is to do with blood sugar levels.

    It might help to look into eating foods that have a low glycaemic index/glycaemic load. This kind of diet stabilises the blood glucose levels and helps avoid crashes.

    Also eating a snack between meals that has protein in it will help keep you stable.

    Consider popping in to your gp for blood tests to see if you're lacking iron ore anything. You might want to take a multivitamin too.

    Example meal plan:

    Breakfast
    Eggs and wholegrain toast

    Snack
    Greek yoghurt and berries

    Lunch
    Chunky vegetable soup, brown seeded soda bread, ham and cheese.

    Snack
    Handful nuts

    Dinner
    Any meat or fish/veg/wholegrain pasta/ brown rice/baby potato combo

    Snack
    Mandarin and piece of cheese

    No problem. There are lots of low GI cookbooks out there for ideas.

    Basically you want to avoid eating too many foods that give you sugary highs and lows - sweets, white flour products etc., and get plenty of fresh unprocessed food and protein.

    OP - do you sleep well at night?

    I recently put a blue light filter on my phone and computers, and while I know that correlation != causation, I do seem to be falling asleep a little quicker the last few weeks (YMMV)
