Colonoscopy prep

    Hi everyone,

I had a colonoscopy done 12 years ago. The initial one had to be be postponed because I could not manage the 4 litres of Klen Prep. I was then given Picolax. Not pleasant but alot easier to handle given the smaller volume and the colonoscopy was performed with no problems.

Fast forward 12 years and I am due for another one with the most likely cause acording to the consultant being internal hameroids. I asked my consulatant if I could use Picolax. In a very nice manner he said he would rather I prepared with MoviePrep and said it was very tolerable. I didn't fight him on it and agreed.

Having searched the internet, I have now discovered that MoviePrep is apparently pretty vile and hard to tolerate. I'm annoyed with myself for not urging the consulatant to presrcibe me Picolax.

I am just terrible at taking oral medicine and am worried I won't complete the prep and thus not have the colonoscopy. Any advice other than man up which I will try to to do?

You can tell the hospital that there's no way you can take the prep and ask for to be given an enema instead. They will give you this when you book in on the day. 10 minutes later you can use the toilet and your bowel will empty. They will then be able to do your exam. They did this for my Mam because she couldn't take the prep either so hopefully you'll be able to do the same.

Hi there. If you need a full colonoscopy you might need more than the enema. The Moviprep is much better than the older bowel preps. You drink one litre at 6pm the night before and bowel movements start about an hour later for an hour or so and then they usually stop allowing a good nights sleep. You do the same usually at 6am the day of the scope. In order to minimise the discomfort you should have water wipes to hand and use something like nappy rash cream or Silcock's base before you have a bowel motion to help protect your skin. Have ice cold water ready to mix the sachets with....it makes it easier to drink. Also you are advised to drink another litre of fluid with it and this can be any clear fluid so get Mi Wadi or whatever cordial you like and mix it up. Good luck with it. That prep really is much better than the old stuff.

It's not that bad. It's lemon flavoured salt mixed with sandy dioralyte stuff. Wash it down with lots of water.

I had Moviprep lately and it's actually not too bad . It is citrusy and quite tolerable . The first litre was no bother , the second a bit tougher but not impossible .
Make sure its cold , so put a litre of water in the fridge to make it up with . Its much easier cold and its slips down easier
I am a bit of a wuss with odd flavours etc but found it actually ok and not at all vile
. My one advice is to have the house warm and dress warm as I was frozen with the cold all day with the effects

Not forgetting the other two litres of plain water...I was still drinking water at 1am

I love moviprep. If anyone has any unused, I'll gladly take it off your hands

Your test has probably been and gone but for anyone else, my two cents:

I had the vile kleen prep. I made the solution up with lime miwadi and water and put it in 500ml bottles in the fridge. I sliced up loads of wedges of lime and then tried to chug a 500ml bottle in 3 stages with my nose pinched (to avoid the taste) and then shoving a slice of lime in my mouth after each stage.

I have an extremely weak stomach and bad gag reflex and I managed to get through the 4 litres, just about. It did take me a little longer than allowed but all was clear :)

I had one on a Monday and was given CitraFleet. Had no issues with taking it but it was nearly 2 hours before it worked which panicked me a bit because I could see a situation where they would be unable to do it. But the surgeon said I was 90% cleaned out.

I'm due another colonoscopy this year - 6 years since the last and it was picolax I was given then - however I also had to fast (liquid only) for three days including procedure day - the picolax part was pretty easy and I'd hope to go that route again -

On the day I was allowed eat my breakfast as normal, then a lunch if a piece of chicken & 2 potatoes and that was it until after the procedure.

Ah right thank you , I was confused and thought you meant on the day .I was the same except breakfast only and then clear fluids until next day .I discovered Bovril Chicken was clear and filled the gap at lunchtime

Were any of you told to restrict your diet in the days leading up to it i.e. beyond just the day before? I haven't been told to but I generally eat a very high fibre diet and I'm wondering if this might affect the scan or if I can count on the MoviePrep to clear it all out? I don't really want to have to restrict my diet for 3 or 4 days before as it would be an awful lot of hassle

I asked that question and was advised to eat as normal up to the date of the prep .

On the day of prep you wont feel that hungry to be honest . Once I got past no breakfast I was ok . Bovril chicken is allowed and is really nice on the fasting day

Keep warm too , I was so cold the prep day . Have Vaseline and wet wipes as eventually the toilet paper is like sand paper
And the colonoscopy itself was no bother at all . I remember a nurse talking my glasses and almost immediately asking if I wanted tea or coffee . I then realised it was all over before I knew it began

Thanks, I'm always cold anyway so will have to crank up the heating. I fear I may live to regret our stinginess in buying cheap loo paper :P

Yeah the colonoscopy is grand. Sure you will feel nothing. Though the first time I woke up with a sore h*le (easily fixed with nurofen) and the second time I woke up farting and farted non stop for about 2 hours. I must have had gallons of air inside me.

That’s what I remember the farting , was at it for hours..loud ones. The day ward I was on was all for same procedure the noise out of everyone was shocking.

Did you get a letter with instructions from the consulant ? Mine was mapped out and told when to start the fast and prep ? I started fasting at 9am after a very light breakfast on day one . My admission was at 8 am next morning

Yeah I'm to stop eating at 9am but not being admitted until 1.15pm the next day. It didn't say anything about dietary restrictions beyond that but I just want to be sure I don't end up having to do it again!

They would have said if you needed to so don't worry

I had colonoscopy in May using Moviprep. Everything was fine.

However it clearly said on instructions from hospital not to drink colored liquids ...... like coffee. I’d imagine this means Bovril too.

You need the colon to be as clean and clear as possible so brown liquids are out.
After every glass of Moviprep I drank a huge glass of 7up Zero - my little reward !

I got one done a few months ago and had a list of foods I couldn't eat 5 days before the procedure and another list for 2 days before. It was fairly restrictive. You would have been given a list if it applied to you though I'd assume.

I hope so! I might ring on Monday just to check, as my diet is pretty fibre-tastic :P

    Had mine this morning.

I was sent an info sheet with foods I could and couldn't eat within 3 days of the procedure, no seeds etc. and was told not to eat after breakfast the day before. After breakfast liquids only until the Moviprep that evening, then fasting both food and liquids from midnight.

My appointment was for 8.15 and I was home by 12.30. I remember being wheeled into the procedure room and that was it until I woke up in the recovery room. The hardest thing about the whole experience was taking the Moviprep......the first batch wasn't too bad....the second batch was extremely difficult to get down....

Best of luck with it G

    Regards

    D.

Hmmm...finished my first batch of MoviePrep (and it was a struggle) at 7pm. Feck all has happened since. I have to get up at 5am to take the second batch and I'm wondering if things will get moving at some point before then or what the story is?

Sounds odd. When I had the movieprep last time I had to take it the evening before the procedure. Not the next morning. What I can say is it took about 4 hours for the movieprep to take affect. I did fast and only eat bland foods 2 days before taking movieprep.

I have an afternoon appointment tomorrow, so I was allowed have breakfast and a very light lunch today. Stopped eating at 12.30pm and was told to do the first batch at 5pm today and the second at 5am tomorrow. It is at least a little reassuring to hear it took yours a while to kick in too! Though if the same happens tomorrow then we're going to have a problem

Thats 12 hours between batch ? I had only a 4 hour gap between mine and it was on the second batch that it really kicked in .

Ps . Did you drink the 500 mls of water in addition to the Moviprep ?

By christ it should. Once it kicks in it will be all systems go. Drink a fair bit of water too.

I had an evening appointment as well and to take one dose in the evening and one at 6 am following morning. Nothing happened with me till about an hour after second prep. Then it took about 3 hours. Make sure you drink between preps. The prep at 6am was horrible.

Is Moviprep better tasting than that beautiful bland vanilla :) Kleanprep ?

I think they are very similar, both fairly nasty , I think the doctors that prescribe them should be encouraged to have firsthand experience of it themselves
There is an alternative called PREPOPIK which is a much smaller ammount of liquid to get down , you do HAVE to take lots of liquid with it and not all consultants will let you take it ,
