I'm going on holiday in October to the canary islands. Is it safe to fly considering escalating tensions between America, Britain, France, Russia and Syria?

Maybe. Maybe not. You could be home by the time anything kicks off.

But as the Canaries aren't particularly close to any of those places, I reckon you'll be grand.

Plus you're more likely to die on your way to work today, so...

Oh! That reminds me. Crucifixes. Have plenty of those in case the fallout turns people in to weird zombie - vampire hybrids.

Plus side is that you'll have a lovely view of the mushroom cloud up there.

You should start wearing an eye patch at all times. That way when the nukes go off you only get blinded in one eye.

(assuming you survive the initial blast)

I really think you shouldn't fly.

If you can't get your money back, I will buy the holiday off you for €20.

    a p1sstake thread surely

A belief in gender identity involves a level of faith as there is nothing tangible to prove its existence which, as something divorced from the physical body, is similar to the idea of a soul. - Colette Colfer

I'm curious as to how ****ed we are. And wanting to be informed, especially as you might not be up to speed on what's actually going on, isn't a bad thing.

But yeah, get on with your own life, there's **** all we can do. And wasn't that "Biggest Bomb Ever" supposed to kick off WW3 as well?

No need to be so smart. It's a genuine question. I've a family with young kids. It's very serious and not to be made a joke of....

Ah man they definitely aren't going to fly now. I mean if that volcano goes off Cork could be taken out by the resulting Super Tsunami....so it's not all bad :D

No one knows if it's safe to fly. If you want to chance it go ahead.
If you don't, stay at home. Let us know how you get on. If we don't hear from you then we'll assume your plane was hit by a wayward missile or you were mowed down by loon in Lanzarote.

Really, it's not that serious. There is always a risk of problems but the chances of something happening to you are slim.

Look at Paris, I have been there three or four times since the terrorist attacks and
    never had an issue.

You would probably be better off in the Canaries in the event of WW3, far away from the main population centres. Only thing is you would probably end up eating only fish and drinking recycled water in Lanzarote.

You're far more likely to die in a horrible plane crash on the way than in any global conflict.

Also far more likely to die during your next bowel movement.

You could trip over your suitcase and fall down some stairs, there's actually a better chance of that happening than any kind of conflict decking up a holiday in The Canaries.
It's not as if you are going to Syria, don't worry and just look forward to a nice holiday with decent weather away from wet and miserable Ireland.

Why would you be less safe in The Canaries than here if conflict broke out?

    No.

If the countries mentioned above are going to slaughter each other, it's guaranteed to be somewhere along the flight path between Ireland and a small group of islands off the coast of west Africa.

    Guaranteed.

I'm at a loss as to why you would be worried an escalated conflict in Syria would affect flight paths 4,000 miles away....

In Russia they were saying to stock up on oats because if there is war, the oats can last for years.
So maybe do that because if you are in the Canaries and the nukes are falling, your oats would be back in Ireland and you stook in the Canaries, that’s with no flights and your dinghy on the way home could be torpedoed.

If they start throwing nuclear stuff around nowhere is safe. Shudders.

I understand OP. These are unsettled and unsettling times. I had a few bad hours when this came off; my extended family/friends are all far away and communications would go

Hard times and make the best decision you can. But the kids would take it hard? Not to go , I mean.

If you're being serious, then there's no way to know now if it will be safe to fly in October. Plan and save for it, you'll have a better answer nearer the time.

I could jump in my car and be in Damascus in 3 hours if I was let through the border. Its 27 degrees, I have a few beers chilling in the fridge, lamb cutlets marinating waiting for the bbq. Am I worried? Am I ****.

It is true about the oats.

But why do anything if afraid something one can’t control could happen?

Since you will be in the Canary Islands, you will get advance notice if something bad is about to happen.

I found a really cheap holiday deal in Syria in August, full bed and board, free transfers etc etc Would it be safe for me and my family to travel there? I'm guessing as we're Irish no one will pay much attention to us and we will have a very enjoyable holiday in relative peace.

Because we are not all the same, my friend . Many were scared last week and he has a young family.Making fun of fear is not helpful.
