Looking at getting a new Android watch after i accidentally damaged my Huawei Watch Series 1. I have a Samsung S8+, i have looked at the Gear S3 Frontier, it seems like the ideal companion to my phone. Just thought i would get opinions before i made the jump.

    Thanks

I briefly had a Gear S3 Frontier but returned it for a Hauwei Watch 2. It was a lovely looking piece of kit but I don't have a Samsung phone and due to Samsung using Tizen rather than Android a lot of the functionality is lost unless you have a Samsung.

If you've got a Samsung phone I'd say go ahead, you'll probably love it, but otherwise I'd look at other options. The Watch 2 is great for functionality (has NFC, HR sensor, GPS built in) but it's not the prettiest watch out there with more of a sports watch look unlike it's predecessor.

I have the huawei 4g in terms of what you get for the money you pay don't think there is anything else out there.
    Battery last day and half.
I did consider Michael kors and fossil have a look in Harvey Norman but in the end I chose the huawei

Both watches are very tempting, i do like the build of the Frontier more so than the Watch 2. I do enjoy Android Wear 2.0 but i don't mind the change or compromise of Tizen's software.

Offline Playlists with Spotify on the Frontier is also another bonus i'm not sure if the Watch 2 has this functionality.

The Wireless Charging on the Frontier is another small bonus that appeals over the Huawei Watch as i despise how you have to move the small proprietary charging accessory into place, hated it on the Huawei Watch Series 1.

Their are little that separate the two, it might be the convenience of the ecosystem, the fact i own an S8+ that will push me to buy that.

Buy the watch now, you'll buy an S10 to match it next year. #Trapped

WearOS (its not AW anymore) is a decent platform, I wouldnt be in any rush to leave.

If there was android pay on tizen I would switch from one to another. But once you get use to some of the perks of android is difficult to go without them

Can i use Samsung Pay at a terminal that has NFC capabilities or MST?

Similar to what Android pay uses to complete a transaction

I have the watch 2 and love it. Don't let the lack of wireless charging put you off, I bought a charging dock on Amazon for beside the bed, just drop it into it every night.

Both really nice bits of equipment and worth trying on both. I thought the S3 was a bit too big on my wrist, seemed to be huge.

I used my phone to pay for stuff twice, very amusing. They rarely see it and when they do you can see the shock in their face. Makes the whole thing worth it :p:D

I've got a ticwatch E which I enjoy, depends on if it suits your needs or not though.

I did try the Gear S3 on for size and i did not think it was humungous in size, noticeably larger than other smart watches though.

I tried the Sport before the S3 and just didn't like the size of the S3. If I hadn't tried both on together I'd probably have bought either without a second thought.

Don't think you would go wrong with either.

That's a really nice looking watch. You own one?

The Amazfit runs a standalone OS, not Wear OS. A big point to be noted.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 145 ✭✭BlackMask93

The Ticwatch and Amazefit are really nice looking watches.

I'll have a look at reviews on them.

Don't kill me guys, but how about an unbranded watch? Maybe 16gb of storage and 2gb of ram for a hundred bucks

    I jk

    What is the watch called?

Depends on what you are looking for, nfc or heart rate important? The Skagen Falster is by far the nicest looking watch at the moment imo, or the new Tag Heuer Connected if you don't mind splashing out. They don't look too big or bulky like most of the watches on the market.

Google IO is coming up at the start of next month and there are some scheduled Wear OS talks. So it might be worth waiting to see what is happening with the platform if you are thinking of moving to Tizen.

Would that thing ever get an update?

That's a good point. But who needs updates... 79€

    From samsung's web:

    Gear S3 Memory = 768MB + 4GB

Of course you need updates, technologies are always evolving. It's already a dinosaur

If you are buying a big brand watch, consider getting it in USA. I got a brand new Huawei Watch 2 Classic recently in NYC for €200 - it's currently €400 on Amazon, which is a bit steep. I physically looked at every other smart watch I could get my hands on. I think that's really important as what was recommended by some people was very different on my wrist.

Amazon USA can deliver to your hotel, but I've only done this before for smaller items. I went to Best Buy and they will price match other stores, including online retailers like Amazon. They also have some "open box" items, i.e. returns. These range from perfect condition to some wear and tear. Even the ones in perfect condition can be heavily discounted. If you know someone travelling soon it might be an option.

The Watch 2 Classic is a good device. Nice display, runs latest WearOS, has NFC, heart rate, apps. I could get about 1.5 days out of it with moderate use, but I just charge it nightly like my phone. I would like a slightly bigger screen, but otherwise no complaints.

I have used NFC payments on the watch several times in Ireland. The 1st occasion was to see if it worked, and the other few times it has genuinely been handy. I'm quite security conscious and keep my phone and wallet in a breast zip pocket, so to be able to just tap my watch is great. No-one has ever commented on it or even given me a strange look. I think people are used to contactless card and phone payments now.

My OH has an Apple Watch though and I'm perpetually jealous. Pity they don't work with Android phones.

I have an LG Urbane 2, it’s a very impressive looking watch, it doesn’t look like a smart watch and does all I want, has the latest wear 2 software, heart rate, google fit.
I have it about a year now and am still very impressed wit it.

I'm looking to sell a Huawei Watch 2 Sport. Have the 1 and I prefer the look of it.

The 2 has NFC and supports Google Pay.

Does the Gear really only support Samsung Pay?

I have the Huawei Watch 2 Sport. Got a great price on amazon for it a few weeks back. Google Pay is disabled on Oreo though. It is not officially supported in Ireland. You can re enable it from the play store but after 20 mins or so it disappears from the watch again. Very annoying!

Have they removed it? I have Google Pay on my phone and use it all the time without issue. Or is this only something with the watch?

Only disabled on the watch on Oreo but it was one of the reasons I went for the Huawei over Samsung to begin with. Google pay still works on my phone.

Pay still works on the watch but it has to be enabled first through the app store every time which is slow and annoying.

There is an app called Pay Enabler on the watch which is a shortcut to enabling it again in the app store

Has anyone got a decent smartwatch running with a Chinese android phone? Currently have a mi max 2 and I'm in the market for a decent watch to go with it.

The phone being Chinese has no impact.

Would you not be better paying the extra $10 / €8 to get it shipped from a European warehouse? It'll be here quicker plus no chance of customs.

Does anyone know if Three (Mobile Network) support LTE in a Smart Watch. I would obviously need to have the sim in my phone as well as the watch simultaneously . I want to be able to leave the phone at home while going for a run but still have the ability to answer calls

    No operator here supports that.
