I am at the stage of speaking to our electrician in a new build. I want to put a surround sound system into the sitting room

    What wiring is needed?

What would I need for a Dolby Atmos set up

    Hi Patravers.

    Thanks for the post.

For wiring up a 5.1 system you would require speaker cable to the 5 speakers that make up the surround set up. (Front left and right, Rear left and right and the centre).
Starting at £1.19 per meter for the Cambridge Audio symphony 100
    http://www.richersounds.ie/p-900187-symphony-100.aspx
(Depending on which speakers you would be running would determine the quality of cable used).

The subwoofer runs on a different type of cable which is a phono to phono cable.
Cambridge offer a 7.5 meter one for £19.95
    http://www.richersounds.ie/p-10538-aud100-75m-sub-cable.aspx

If you went down the road of Atmos there are two ways you can set this up.
You can use two in-ceiling speakers like the Monior Audio Pro 65 priced at £69.00. (Depending if you can cut hole in your ceiling or not).
    https://www.monitoraudio.com/en/product-ranges/pro/pro-65/

You would need to run speaker cable from the location of your amp to each of these also.

The second way would to use upward firing speakers and there are a few manufacturers who have released some sets of these.
Onkyo have the SKH410 priced at £119.00
    http://www.richersounds.ie/p-200949-skh410.aspx

Next up would be the Elac Atmos A4's retailing at £249.00
    http://www.richersounds.ie/p-202097-debut-a4-atmos.aspx

This type also requires speaker cable ran to them from the main hub.

This would give a 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos setup:
    https://www.dolby.com/us/en/guide/dolby-atmos-speaker-setup/index.html

    I hope this helps.

Any questions please let me know.

WHAts the advantage of going with a higher spec cable?

We are just putting the roof on now but as it is a a two storey house I’m not sure if putting speakers in the ceiling is the best option. If we went with the two speakers for the Atmos, can these two speakers be placed at the two top corners of the room? Do you only need two speakers or one for each corner?

Aside from these speakers what else is required for an Atmos? Would you be better going for https://www.richersounds.ie/p-201530-hts5805.aspx as a set up or going with a set up like the Denon receiver https://www.richersounds.ie/p-13062-avrx3400.aspx (what else is required with a receiver? Separate amp or subwoofer?)

    Hi Patravers.

The advantage of going for higher spec cables basically gives better resistance, better sound quality.
The below link is taken from the Cambridge Audio website and explains things a little deeper.
    https://www.cambridgeaudio.com/gbr/en/blog/speaker-cables

For an Atmos setup (5.1.2) you only require 2 Atmos speakers to go along with the normal 5.1 system.
The extra two Atmos speaker must go either in the ceiling between your seating position and the front left and right of the 5.1 setup.
The second way in mentioned above requires the two Atmos speakers to be positioned beside or on top of the front left and right speakers firing upwards to the ceiling.
Mounting any type of speaker in the corners of the room would lose a lot of its effect as this would be far too high of a position.
Ideally you want the front left and right and rear left and right around head height while seated.

The link above in my first post is to the Dolby Atmos website and has diagrams of how a typical 5.1.2 Atmos setup show be positioned to get the best effect.

The Onkyo 5805 systems mentioned above is a nice easy all in one box 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos setup and the Atmos speakers are built into the front left and right speakers so no need to extra ones.

If going for the likes of the AVRX3400 (Which is an excellent receiver/amp) you would also require a 5.1 speakers setup (front left and right, rear right and left a centre speaker and a subwoofer) and then the two additional two Atmos speakers.

For speakers to match the quality of the AVRX3400 you would be look at something like the Q Acoustics 3000 series 5.1 priced at £639.00
    https://www.richersounds.com/tv-home-cinema/speaker-packages/q-acoustics-3010-x2-3090c-and-3070s-subwoofer-graphite.html

Or perhaps the Cambridge Audio SX 5.1 with floostanding speakers coming in at £649.00
    https://www.richersounds.com/tv-home-cinema/speaker-packages/cambridge-audio-sx80-sx70-sx50-sx120.html

You could maybe even drop down to the AVRX2400 (Still has Dolby Atmos) and pair it with the Monitor Audio Mass 5.1 at a package deal of £789.00
    https://www.richersounds.com/denon-avrx2400-black-and-monitor-audio-mass-5-1-system-black.html

Or go all out with the AVRX2400 with the Monitor Audio Bronze 5 5.1 pack for £1399.00
    https://www.richersounds.com/denon-avrx2400-black-monitor-audio-bronze-5-black-monitor-audio-bronze-w10-subwoofer-black-monitor-audio-bronze-fx-black-and-monitor-audio-bronze-centre-black.html

You could still use any of the Atmos speaker listed in my first post to finish off the above 5.1 systems.

    Let me know your thoughts.

IF the speakers were not in the top corners but at head height would these be wired I Tom the walls st this height? Would I need to leave he cables hang from the walls after the plasterer etc?

    Hi Patravers.

No matter were you mount the speakers you would still require speaker cable to be run to each speaker from the location of where the Amp/ Receiver will be sitting.

So if wall mounting then yes you would be required to plaster the cables into the wall inside a bit of trucking. Making sure that enough cable is left at both the speaker and the receiver end for connecting.

Can you give me an idea of how you would configure the system when you have to have the tv in the corner we have a square room the back of the room and right have windows the sofa will face a duplex see through stove which I was informed will have too much heat for a tv meaning the tv will be in he left or right corner. How would you configure 5.1? I can send a pic if you need

would the http://www.richersound...87-symphony-100.aspx be sufficient or should i upgrade? I think we are going with the two in ceiling speakers and mounting the tv over a two sided stove thats flat to the wall and will rarely be used. As it is over a fire should we mount the centre speaker over the tv or just under it. If under is the speaker going to take up much room

    Hi Patraver.

You could drop to the AVRX2400 with the Mass 5.1 for the bundle price of £789.00 and it would still sound fantastic!!!

The Symphony 100 is a good entry level cable but perhaps the 200 would be better for this quality of setup. The Symphony 200 is priced at £1.79 per meter but i could offer at £1.50 per meter.

You would still also require a sublink.
Cambridge offer a 7.5 meter one for £19.95
    http://www.richersound...0-75m-sub-cable.aspx

For the in ceilings it would be the ones mentioned above:
The Monior Audio Pro 65 priced at £69.00.
    https://www.monitoraud...t-ranges/pro/pro-65/

If it was me I would mount the centre below the TV as above it would be to high and you would lose out sound quality.
The Mass centre is very small compared to a normal one.
    Dimensions
    Size of speakers (H x W x D) mm.
    128 x 228 x 128

Let me know what you think.

Perfect. I was wondering, perhaps the electrician will know, with all the cabling, do they all connect to a wall plate rather than having speaker wires come from the wall into the system

    Hi Patraver.

You can indeed get wall plates that the speaker cable would connect into the back of and then on the front have banana plugs inputs.
The face plates are not something we normally stock but I'm sure I could source some for you.

You are still going to need to run cables between the wall plates and the speakers using banana plugs on one end or both ends.
Banana plugs come in at £5.99 per pair
    http://www.richersounds.ie/p-202337-4mm-banana-plugs-v2.aspx

The sublink will need to run between the A/V Receiver and subwoofer direct.

What bracket would you need to mount those monitor speakers? or would you put them on stands? what is the cost of both options

    Hi Patravers.

    You can do either.

Both are listed on our website:

Mass bracket priced at £12.95 per bracket:
    http://www.richersounds.ie/p-12320-masm-single.aspx

Mass stands priced at £112.50 per pair
    http://www.richersounds.ie/p-12011-mass-stands.aspx

Its really up to yourself which way you go for mounting the speakers depending on which you think would suit your room better.
Usually a customer would use stands for the front and wall mount the rears but it really is down to the individual.

Can I call someone first thing Monday , chasing walls starting and directly to the left of the sofa is the door so can put speaker there and door closes j , thinking putting surround speaker on wall at back and having door hammstoppjng door closing on it.
Putting speaker on side wall may be too far forward. I sent the pic of plan before but can send it again to discuss

I called the shop today to discuss my set up. You weren’t there but I think I’m nearly there. I’ll start off with 80 metres of the 200 sound cable at £1.50?

Also I have 3 IBRA 10M HDMI High Speed Cable v2.0 cables. Are these sufficient for Sky Blu-ray and connecting with the receiver and tv?

House will be finished September. Will the offer on the speakers and receiver Denon backache at 789 I think still be going? Will also prob look at a new tv

    Hi patravers,

If you want to PM me your contact number I can get that cable order processed for you.

With regards to the pricing, I'm afraid I don't know how long a price will last in advance. We always have bundle deals running though but it depends on current lines and cost prices.

Your HDMI cables should be fine. Are they active HDMI cables? We would recommend active cables for longer lengths as they tend to stop drop outs of sound and picture.

Let me know what you think.

    Kind regards

    David

    David
My mobile is 087-0658467. Im a teacher and won't always be able to answer but ill call back. You dont by any chance take deposits on items? Also looking at getting a new TV up to 50 inch for the sitting room mostly for watching sports and movies not gaming. Any recommendations?
    Hi Patravers,

I will give you a call asap.

could you delete messages with my number on them please.

Also, have you any ideas re: TV for about 50 inches max. Its simply for sports and movies and not gaming.
    Hi Patravers,

I would recommend the Panasonic TX50EX700. At 595 euro it's the best value 50" TV for features. It has a fantastic panel with good brightness/colour and very high motion processing rates for sport and movies:

I will need to order two of the Monior Audio Pro 65 speakers next for the ceiling. Do the tweeters need to be pointed towards the seating position on these?

    Hi Patravers.

If this is for the Atmos setup I would just leave the tweeters facing down wards.

That's how we have them setup in our demo room also.

I could offer the pro 65's for £65 each with free shipping.

    Hi patravers,

The wall plates aren't an item we stock but you could probably source them at an electrical wholesalers.

    Sorry for all the questions!

After i get the Denon AV 2400 - It says this is HEOS enabled. How would this work if i wanted wireless speakers in the kitchen or does having the av receiver in the sitting room make any difference?

Also we may have to put right angled HDMI connectors on the cables as with a brick wall there is not a lot of room for the distance required for the HDMI. Do these connectors impact signal quality with 4k or atmos?

    Hi Patravers.

Heos is Denon's answer to Sonos.
    https://www.denon.co.uk/uk/heos-wireless-speakers

The 2400 has the Heos feature built in allowing you to download the Heos app to your phone or tablet and play music via it through the amp.
It also would allow you to connect the Heos speakers to it like the Heos 1 HS2 priced at £199.00
    http://www.richersounds.ie/p-12997-black-12997.aspx
This could go into your kitchen.

You can use the angled connectors but I would just be careful that they are of good quality. They are not something we would stock unfortunately.

    Hi patravers,

I would have to look into the recessing measurements as you would need a bit of height to allow it to hook onto the bracket. Are you looking a for a flat bracket or a cantilever full motion one?

I wouldn’t necessarily need a cantilever one but I seen they can make it easier to get behind the tv and also easier to hang perhaps. I was thinking
Of recessing about 6 inches and leaving 1 inch all around the tv

    Hi patravers,

You probably would be better with a cantilever bracket as you can take the arm out and mount the TV and push it back into the recess.

I would recommend the Sanus BLF213 which can extend 84mm from the wall and will take a 50" TV.

    These retails at £179.

Let me know what you think.

    Is this no longer available?

You could maybe even drop down to the AVRX2400 (Still has Dolby Atmos) and pair it with the Monitor Audio Mass 5.1 at a package deal of £789.00
    https://www.richersoun...-1-system-black.html

Also is the panasonic TX50EX700 no longer in stock? Is there an alternative as I have my recess based on this measurement. We had a hold up with our construction and are a few months behind

    Hi Patravers.

There are still some of the 2400 left in stock even thought they have now been discontinued. The NEW 2500, 3500 4500 etc... have now been released.

You could indeed get the 2400 with the mass 5.1 deal and it would sound great. The link above does not open to anything and I can not see them bundles together at the £789 price.
Could you resend the link as the one above seems incomplete.

I do see the AVRX2500 and the mass 5.1 pack listed as a package at £949
    https://www.richersounds.com/denon-avrx2500-monitor-audio-mass-5-1.html

You could maybe even look at the Sony 1080 paired with the mass pack for £899
    https://www.richersounds.com/sony-strdn1080-black-and-monitor-audio-mass-5-1-system-black.html

The 50EX700 has also now been discontinued and replaced by the 49FX700 priced at £619

Is the 500 worth the extra over the 400? I’ll look st measurements in the TV as it might accommodate a 55 inch.

    Hey Patravers.

There are are a differences between the two.
All the HDMI inputs and outputs on the 2500 are compatible with HDR on the the 2400 not all of the are.
    The 2500 adds a 2nd sub output.
I'm sure there are also other small changes to the parts used inside the 2500.

Both are still very good at what they do.

    Hi Patravers,

The main difference is the panel type. The 550 uses an edge lit panl whereas the 700 makes use of local dimming. This is better for colour and contrast. The FX700 also has a higher motion processing rate (1600Hz BMR vs 1000 Hz BMR) which makes it a much smoother panel.

Let me know what you think.

    Kind regards

I have a recess built in fire resistant board thats plastered. I will be mounting the television to this over the fireplace. Will the sanus flat bracket be ok or should i get the tilt one. Are these ok to mount to fire resistant board?

Is there any of the denon 2400 still in stock? whats the best deal for a Tv an bracket? and also another price to include the denon 2400 and monitor mass 5.1?

Do you still do the deal to pay half now and half in 6 months?

    Hi patravers,

Unfortunately the Denon AVRX2400 is completely discontinued and I have none left.

I do have stock of the AVRX2500. The Buy Now Pay later deal is not available with us I'm afraid, it is only available in our mainland stores. I can do a bundle on the AVRX2500 with the Mass 5.1 for £829.

With regards to the bracket, it really depends how high it is above your viewing position. It should link to fire resistant board so long as it's solid and can take the weight.

Let me know what you think.

    Kind regards

    David

I think what i will do is get the TV and bracket and get the speakers after christmas. Just too many outgoings after building the house which is why i wanted to do the pay later.

I will measure the height the bottom of the TV is off the ground and get back to you regarding the bracket.

I forgot the measurements but the tv is just above the fireplace so when sitting down it is above eyeline.

Would you recommend a tilt bracket? What’s the price for a bracket and the tv. I can call later to pay

    Hey Pat.

I tilt bracket might help if you find you are straining when watching the TV. The tilt bracket can also sit flat if the tilt action is not required.

A tilt bracket for a 49" would be the Sanus BMT1 priced at £79.00
