Hard to see it making any noticeable impression on the public. I think it's going to suffer from a catch-22: Spectators aren't going to be interested in it unless there's sufficient coverage of it, and I don't think there's going to be sufficient coverage of it unless the interest is already there.

And without coverage and interest, there's not going to be much in the way of money in it (sponsors won't care either), so it's not going to be particularly attractive to athletes.

There is the seeds of a good idea there. I think it'd be great to hear something like "Barshim needs a top 2 placing and a 2.38 to overtake Van Niekerk in this round and take the annual title", but hard to see it coming about without significant investment.

There isn't anything in the way of sponsorship interest in the tennis rankings though, doesn't stop it being mentioned in reports around any grand slam that such and such will lose, gain the top spot if they finish in position X etc or that they have held the top spot for however long.

Does anyone in the non-tennis expert fan world actually know or care how a Wimbledon compares with an Olympics or another tour event though as far as ranking points go?

Being number one will be of interest to the athletes agents though if it means they get to ask for better appearance fees.

I believe tennis rankings are used for seeding entries though (and for deciding who gets round 1 entry, who has to play qualifying rounds, etc), while entry to athletics championships is based on a single performance.

Diamond League invites, maybe? Although there as well I wonder if one great performance in a high-profile event wouldn't earn you a better appearance fee than several consistently good performances.
