    Hey all,

I have had to face the horrible truth that my hair maybe starting to get a bit thin up top. At 26, I didn't think it'd happen this soon though:o

In the last few weeks thought I've noticed a lot of lads in their 20's seem to be loosing their hair and getting very thin/patchy up top.

    Was it always like this?

What with all the things coming and going and no-one there to do anything about the happenings, sure is it any wonder?!

Demanding women is most likely the culprit :pac:

If you shave your head bald, the hair will come back thicker and curlier than ever before.

    Just like my pubes.

Masculinity is under attack, even at follicular level. When is enough enough!?

It's male pattern baldness and there is nothing one can do about it even if your extremely rich. I'm poor and have a full head of thick hair at almost middle age. Ha bloody ha.

No, they all had full heads of hair when they were younger.

It's only because it's happening to you that you're noticing it more. It's called the baader meinhof phenomenon

Always. You just notice more not that it's affecting you.

I started losing mine at 19 and I took it hard at the time. I've shaved it since and haven't thought at thing about it in years.

Did you grow a beard OP?

If so, well that is where your head hair went.

Tell that to Elon Musk. Hair transplants are a great option nowadays

I'm seriously thinking of getting a good quality wig, not some rug that i slap on in the morning, but one like that Karl Pilkington tried in that series he did - the moaning of life I think ..

Bald men are sexy, as for women 50% like bald men and 50% like men with hair you will be grand. The only thing is you need a decent tight haircut in the in-between stage.

You can get a hair transplant for a few thousand, or else you can just take inexpensive medication once you notice some initial loss to stop any further progression.

There's no reason to lose your hair these days if you actually want to hang onto it.

I can only assume you are joking. What nonsense!

There were plenty of men with male pattern baldness in their early 30s long before the electric showers and the advent of modern hair care products.

In the 50s some people blamed the fashion for flat caps and hats.
    It's genetic, pure and simple.

Luckily I come from a long line of non-bald ancestors and still, at 74 have a full head of hair. Though I might stop showering and washing my hair just in case.

Mine started going when I was 18 but pretty much just started shaving it off anyway.

My brother kept his a little longer and has an ox bow lake, his loss is a slower progression than mine but he said yesterday he's going to turkey for a transplant, he's very sensitive about it..

Those drugs can have bad side effects and HT are expensive with variable results. Theres certainly avenues to pursue if you really want to keep the hair but far from a 'cure' to baldness yet

Also it has always been like this, its caused by natural hormone changes and is not any sign of poor health or lifestyle even though it looks bad..Men losing hair in their 20's is and always has been common, unfortunately!

They can, but in less than 1% of people and only a fraction of that 1% suffer serious side effects. If you take it early enough, there's not really any need for a HT.

Modern transplants are natural and relatively cheap these days from reputable places - obviously wanting to go from completely bald to a full head of hair will never end very well but modest hair transplants are very successful.

You're right in that it's not actually a cure, but it's a big advancement on the previous options (go bald, get a crappy 'plug' transplant or get a wig).

My dad has a decent head of hair at almost 60, but his brothers all started balding in their 30's, and my mother's side all went bald in their 20's.

it has probably increased recently (last few years) because of the boom in people taking up the gym and that boosts hormones and too much testosterone will speed up the process of your balding. (as a male)

Am I the only one who thinks baldness cand be attractive and sexy. Why are men so bothered by it?

That is false info. Easy to do something about it if one chooses. Prince William is not a celebrity, he chose not to do a thing about his hair.

Thats a myth, testosterone doesnt cause balding, DHT does. There is plenty of men with very high testosterone and perfect hairlines

The point about the gym may actually have a grain of truth to it though as there is a proven link between taking creatine gym supplements and male pattern baldness, which a lot of gym guys take today

Because people tend to point and laugh, with the mindset 'ah sure he's a lad, he'll get over it'.

Seriously, where do people get these ideas from?

So if true how come the majority of professional sports people are mostly not bald?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,300 ✭✭✭✭razorblunt

Whatever you do, don't buy a wig!
They look fcuking ridiculous, I don't even get the point of them, they're so obviously bad.

It's not really different to asking why someone would be bothered by bad teeth, a crooked nose, huge ears, etc.

It's pretty obvious yet people want to downplay an obvious truth - it makes people self conscious.

It doesn't mean there is anything wrong with any of those things or that it is necessarily to the detriment of their appearance, but it's completely understandable.

Not at all true, that's another myth.

The level of baldness, and the age of onset, is no different today than 60 hears ago or more.

I'm in my late 40's and I'm shocked at the amount of my colleagues that are bald or going bald.
Many years ago when I was younger there didn't seem to be so many bald people. I don't have any stats but I do feel there are a lot more bald people these days and a lot of people going bald at a much younger age too.

Because even if some men can pull it off. Most cant. So it makes most men look worse. And no man looks worse WITH a full head of hair. And balding makes all men look 10+ years older than their actual age, even the ones who still look decent bald
Plenty of reasons why it makes men feel self conscious. Just look at the comments made a few pages back about the prince going bald, is why men feel self conscious

I dont understand it either tbh. Society simultaneously mock men about balding while telling them to get over it and that it doesnt matter

This has to be down to perception and at the time you were mostly hanging around with people your own age and therefore they weren't bald.

I'd rather have a full head of hair, purely just for some choice or variation in how I look, but I don't mind that I'm balding. It started when I was 24 and by 27, the hair had to go. I've done the bic before but find a 1-2mm trim looks grand and it's easy.

As I say, it is a bit boring knowing I'll have the same haircut for the next few decades.

Bald men look ten years older?
    Are you 'aving a laf?

I could google 20 photos of bald men who look younger than their actual age right now with zero effort.
