Are you sure it was Otters, as they are certainly in every county of England.

Are you thinking of the Beaver reintroduction?

if it was beavers, the reintroduction was featured a few weeks ago on hugh fearnley whittingstall's 'hugh's wild west', on BBC.

he loves otters and is 100% sure it was otters but it could have been a program on the beavers and he could have spotted an otter somewhere.

could ye point me in the right direction so i can find all the benefits of having otters on rivers?

Is this for a child or an adult? There are loads of good books and sites on otters for all ages or level of knowledge..

As for the benefits; it's an odd way to put it. They are one of our few native mammals and a sign of a healthy ecosystem. What benefit is having a blackbird in a hedgerow?

its for an adult he is nearly 60, he says the big benefit is that an otter will keep mink numbers down along the river, but put me in search of finding more benefits

There does appear to be a correlation between increased Otter numbers in an area and reduced mink numbers. Of course anglers will tell you there's also a reduction in the numbers of decent sized fish in the rivers.
