I just left sky. Couldnt get freesat on the old sky box, I got a satellite box which workds, all freesat channels but no Irish

After reading up on it RTE goes out over saorview which is twinned with freesat which Im receiving through the old Sky dish but Saorview has to come in on an aeriel not the sat dish? Is that right?

Anyone got a step by step guide to get the Irish channels in? Try as I might I cant find one.

RTE is only on SKY not freesat, you are referencing Saorview Connect which is a hybrid FTA/saorview box so RTE is received on the saorview antenna side of that box. Just like you'd stick an aerial into the back of your TV set. The only advantage is if you plug your internet into it you can watch catch-up/on-demand tv via the IP input. It has no PVR capacity yet.

My advice is buy an antenna for RTE and buy a Freesat PVR for the UK channels. If you want to record stuff from Irish telly then buy a saorview PVR from like likes of Walker http://www.freetv.ie/saorview-pvr/

You need an aerial pointed at your nearest Saorview transmitter (there's a map on Saorview website).

This aerial connects to either a Saorview set top box that connects to your TV or else a TV with a DVB T MPEG4 tuner.

If you post the model of TV you have, we can check if it works with Saorview and if it does then you won't need a separate set top box for the Irish (Saorview) channels. If you have more than one TV then the aerial signal can be split but each TV needs to have its own tuner and if it doesn't then you need a set top box for that TV.

What satellite box did you get? Is it a combo (satellite & terrestrial)?

The satellite box is called a zgemma H2S. http://www.satworld.ie/zgemma-star-h2s-satellite-receiver-dvb-s2-iptv-lan-linux-enigma-2.html

I was given it by someone who wasnt using it anymore, doesnt look like its terrestial but if somone who is a bit more knowledgeable could take a look at that spec and let me know, it would be most appreciated.

The TV is an LG LM640T http://www.lg.com/uk/support/support-product/lg-47LM640T
how would I know if it supports saorview?

Sat box isnt great, but it was free and it'll do the job. It doesnt do Terrestial / Soarview.

But your TV does and you can even record on it with a USB stick plugged into it. Depending where you are, you might get away with a small indoor aerial, I use an old rabbit ear on top of the TV I got in Dealz for €1.49 in South Dublin and works just fine.. but obviously for best results a larger outdoor aerial would be better.

I have an old aerial somewhere so once I stick that in, how to tune in? Havent done that since the mid 80s sometime.
Is it like hit the AV button until I get on to one of the channels thats the aerial?

See here for tuning LG TVs

There's also a user guide on the link you posted above that'll explain it.

RTE 1 SD is FTA on 11914 H 27500, channel name 5537. Probably won't last.

At this stage almost any TV will let you record Saorview to a USB key.

And much of the content on 3/3e/be3 is available earlier, and in HD on Freesat.

My Manhattan box seems particularly stupid at picking up channels that are not officially Freesat or FTA. Anything in test mode or transition isn't spotted.

It's not a great picture quality in SD for people who are paying sky. (ripoff) Viewing in 4k upscaled.

And funny enough, the old RTE AERTEL is working on it, haven't seen that since the old terrestrial days :-)

Yeah, saw that (by accident) and wondered about it.
I never really used Aertel, even back in the day, so was not sure what it might be expected to look like. :)

Is there any information what this channel is for or why it appeared?

Who is paying for its carriage?

It's an odd one alright. Just tuned it in now on my Humax box. No 'HD' in the DOG and picture quality is poor enough. Didn't know there was an SD version of RTE1 (+1 is SD). Sky channel 101 is the HD version.

My only thought is that Sky might be planning to make it available in SD for some subscribers (maybe FTV) while separating the HD version for premium subscribers.

Yet, I seem to recall that Sky are obliged to provide it in HD as it is on Saorview, under the terms they are allowed to broadcast it.

So, still have no idea who is responsible for this or what the plan for it might be.
