Xperia L1 problems answering calls

Xperia L1 When the phone is asleep and I get a call the screen stays black. I have discovered that, sometime, pressing the power button and pulling down from top of screen reveals the answer button. Sometimes i can see the little phone icon at top. It is very inconvenient and i have missed calls as a result
