15k relatively quick/fun car

    Hi all,

I've got about 15k to spend on a car to keep for about a year, I only drive on weekends so fuel economy isn't an issue, tax would ideally be sub 1k but not a deal-breaker. I'm looking for a 4 door, reliable, ideally petrol, fast & comfortable car which will be easy enough to trade in in 12 months. What would you get? I'm stumped.

I just happened to drive an f10 520d sport (manual) recently, loved everything but the engine, my god it was just asthmatic. Hoping for 200bhp+

Very vague I know, but any suggestions greatly appreciated!

Why would you spend 15k on a car you only plan to keep for a year?

That's the limit of what I can spend?

My point is that spending that much means you have more to lose over 12 months in depreciation than say spending half that figure. Plenty of Mk5 Golf GTis for sale for around 6/7k.

It's hardly asthmatic now to be honest. If you want more power then get a 530

Oh right sorry yea, I've had a mk5 GTi & loved it but was just hoping for a big saloon next. Personal preference really. I go through phases of wanting a nice car then saying feck this & buying a bangernomic for a year then buying a nice one again. The longest I've kept any car was 2 years which was the GTi, but typically change annually. Currently driving an E46 325ci sport I picked up for 800 quid 8 months ago, great car but just looking for something a bit newer & bigger this time & hoping to get an M car after that.

I've read it could actually be the manual/520 combo that made it feel that way, 530s are hard to find with that budget & not intergalactic mileage. Cheers though

I hear what your saying but big petrol and saloons suffer huge depreciation so it's very unlikely that you not lose a good bit of what you paid on it in 12 months time. Most will probably command 1k+ motor tax also.

A 2008 Lexus GS450H for example would have blistering straight line speed, cost 1200 to tax but would not be known to be fun, could also be hard to shift in 12 months time too.

Yea true. Also true that a GS is not fun. May just try hold out for a f10 530d as they're pretty easy to move on & would have a good bit of power so cover most bases. not fun per se, but nice to drive. Presumably, I've only driven the E60 530.

I was hoping there was an obvious car I hadn't thought of!

Cheers, had considered it but it's the same as the GTi so was hoping for something a bit bigger.

Id be buying a 1jz chaser or rb25 laurel. Absolute wagon. 4 door. Wont drop in price. As quick as you would want. Tax is in your area.

Cheers, yea on paper they're pretty much exactly what I want. But I'm just not really into the modified/jap look, plus would probably be a pain trading one in.

€15k should get you a decent E39 M5. 4 Door, 6 Speed Manual, 400hp 5.0 V8, what's not to like :D Not only that but they're appreciating mad the last year, a worthwhile investment as you're not likely to lose much if you go to sell in a year.

If I could find one for that I'd go for it, can't see any though, even in the UK. Think they've already gone out of reach!

That's the current issue with them, you can buy cheaper ones in the UK but have about 10k lined up for them!

Would you consider buying in the UK ?

Accord euro r ? Some of them aren't too far off looking like ordinary Accords if you avoid white.

Mk4 Mondeo 2.0 ecoboost or a 2.5t 5 cylinder ? The 2.5 can be easily tuned to over 260 bhp. Some of the Titanium models look really well.

    Or a Mazda 6 mps ?

All of these could definitely be got while leaving a good bit of change in your pocket. Only thing is that they won't be the easiest to sell on.

    +1

And if you wanted something a bit more modern than the E39, you could get a 500bhp E60 M5 for around €15k too.

Absolutely. But I think that's probably not really an issue for the OP here, based on his posts.

I can't see any e39s or e60s for sub 15k, certainly with the E60 I'd also need a 15k "just in case" fund!

There's several on PistonHead site for around that money. But yeah if €15k is a hard limit then E39 all the way. Arguably a better drive too, but I haven't driven an M5 version of either of them so just going on what I've heard from others.

That should be on the dreamers thread, it's WAY overpriced considering it's a 10 year old Jap import and will cost considerable money to insure.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,738 ✭✭✭Heres Johnny

Love the way a thread looking for a relatively quick and fun car on a modest budget threw up e39 and e60 m5 as suggestions.
Gotta love the motor forum......but go for it OP I'd love to see a few more m5 knocking around.

    Some day I'll own one!

Na that's kinda the money they make. The year and the fact it's an import are irrelevant ditto insurance costs.

To a Honda man the often touted last true type R is very high on their wishlist.

I wouldn't pay it but plenty do and will continue to do so.

Point taken! I'm not a HondaHead at all. Love my Bimmers but if anything Jap, I'd be a MazdaMan :)

Yea to be honest I'm hoping to get the E39 M5 in 2019 or so, I just don't want to get the cheapest high mileage one now, as it'll kill me to keep on the road & I'll end up hating it.

the price of the e39 m5 is going up.

a half decent one is 15 to 20 grand sterling at the moment in the UK

    Saab v6 turbo x.

    there's a leftfield one for you :)

or bring one in from the uk for a lot cheaper

    https://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/saab/9-3/saab-9-3-2-8-aero/8399931

edit. actually the one in the uk is not a turbo x, just normal aero. same 2.8 v6 though. the turbo x is more collectible. few more on autotrader uk.

If you want an m car, why don’t you buy an m car. Or wait till you have the money? Buying something now for e15 k that will be worth 10k next year, makes no sense!

Unless it is like an e46 m3 or e39 m5, that will probably at least hold their value, if not appreciate

The 6 are well known to be very susceptible to rust underneath, and not just light rust, heavy nasty rust. It's been a problem with mazda for years, not just the 6. They are shockingly bad.

Arches and sills rust too on them. Whatever metal they are made from seems to be very poor quality.

I think finding a rust free example in the uk will be very difficult and even in this country where you still see lots of rust on the underside of mazdas.

To be fair though, an F10 is going to be a LOT less fun. The E46 is a very good car, the 6 cylinders are fun. You're not going to better it by restricting yourself to 4 doors and 15k. You'll get different alright, but almost everything bar a hot hatch will be less fun or a money pit.

Nice, big, sturdy, powerful, saloon. Should be bought for not much over a third of your budget and more fun than a bmw!

Only thing is its jap which you said you werent after... few automatics up too if you wanted to go that way. Bang for your buckthese are hard to beat

I was going to suggest the Legacy B4/GT also as there are quite a few really nice examples for sale at the moment. They're a fantastic car and the 280hp boxer engine is so sweet.
