I’d love to apply for that job but I’m not eligible. Sounds like a very interesting role.

It is, very varied work and out and about a lot, shift work and on call but it's all part of its charm!
Why I posted this here just in case eligible candidates weren't aware of it as it won't be on public jobs.

Is it called Revenue Enforcement Allowanced Posts by any chance?

Hello. For the first time ever Dublin port customs has announced an interdepartmental CO competition. This used to be CO specific to revenue but is now open to all current serving COs.

This is an allowanced post, and very interesting work, more info at the link

Yes it is indeed. Unsure if the open competition is still on going

I think it might be closed. I have interview for it on the 4th of April, my colleague has one on Tuesday.

They have a new competition for dog handlers and positions in Dublin Port.

Yes it's closed, new competition is internal only, not interdepartmental .

    Internal competition only

Cheers, was thinking that dog handling as a new recruit seemed a bit OTT.

Yea, I can't see it being an open competition unfortunately!

Just got a response from Revenue and didn't make the cut... A Dear John reply :-(
I reached 40ish on the order of merit and was wondering what the highest place was for interview out there?

As it's based only in Dublin port, there would only be a few spots, I don't know, however, how many spots. It can be a very competitive panel unfortunately.

All info should have been in the competition booklet. Or are you looking for more specific information?

More specific if possible. Have to fill in the competencies on the form before interview. Been advised to use S.T.A.R. method?

I'm unfamiliar with the star method - I find if the examples for each compentency goes in the format of:
    - what was the problem at hand
    - what did you do to solve the problem
    - conclusion
    - how would this relate to the enforcement post/how would you use this example in an enforcement environment.

Keep it short and to the point and remember the type of job it's for and try to relate your examples to that. So you'd pick examples that show you have dealt with difficult situations, etc

    Got an interview next week!!

Just wondering about the on call, when are you expected to be on call, is it on the weekends where attendance is expected?
Its not clear (to me) in the booklet, just says you are expected to be at the port within 45 mins when called....

yes thats what I am wondering, where is says expected attendance is that when you would be on call?

Also, what happens in relation to Bank holidays? Would you receive days or would that also be considered part of the unsocial hours allowance? Or do you just get them off?

    When is your interview ORBY73?

I'll clear up some questions re weekends and bank holidays.
Weekends you work either Saturday or Sunday every second weekend, bank holidays you work on a rolling basis - so you work every third or so it all depends on the work at the time however.

On call is a roster basis and is for a week duration every few weeks. You are on 24/7 on call for that week and are expected to be able to get In quickly in order to be there for the case at hand. This means no drinking! Over Christmas you are placed on call for 2 days to cover holiday periods.

I am unaware as to how many vacancies there are over all - I can try to find out however.

It would depend on how many accepts their offer when made and people failing training and such. It happens the odd time that people do join but find it's not for them, so it's next on the panel in that case

Can you fail training? How tough is the training? I wonder then what happens if you fail training, or even if its not for you - are you sent back to the Dept you came from or put somewhere in Revenue?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5 Wing Commander

According to the initial booklet if you don't pass the years probation you will be sent back to your original dept so I assume it's the same for failing training etc. I know there are exams during the 4 weeks training that must be passed before you can progress. Don't know how tough they are.

Training is intensive but I am unsure of how it goes as it's only a new thing. You will learn the basics of customs procedures and will also go through legislation training especially focused on the finance act of 2001 and customs act of 2015. You may also touch on the taxes consolidation act and proceeds of crime act but it isn't the main legislation you would use as a customs officer.

If you do fail or decide to not go ahead you just got back to your original post

Should move very soon, you'll be sent for training first, from what I've gathered asking around there are a fair few CO vacancies available and perhaps more even made so hopefully it'll be soon!

I used two occupations as examples for the competencies but they did ask me for others so no harm having one or two extra!
