Lots of shops in town closed early today, a few have signs saying they're not opening tomorrow and will decide about Friday later on.

It's pretty tame (so far) in Galway City in comparison to a lot of the country.

Anyone know what shops closed early and are staying closed tomorrow?

Dunnes closed at six instead of seven. Some of the late night shops won't do one tomorrow evening. Any that closed today are taking the p1ss.

Good layer of snow laid down on the rounds now. Will see if it freezes.

I'd reckon get set for a crappy commute tomorrow.

Red warning for full country issues at 11 and in place till 3pm Friday.

Red Warning for tomorrows weather event has gone nationwide!
    We are in guys.
Does that mean schools are automatically closed?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,929 ✭✭✭beardybrewer

Yes, as far as I know the schools and uni will be shut on issue of a red warning.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,292 ✭✭✭✭Mrs OBumble

NUIG Students' Union just tweeted that the uni is closed.

Stay and home and eat your bread. Tomorrow night is going to be nasty.

Is Galway forecast to get hit badly?..

Might be a night for staying in and watching The Thing and eyeing your house mates suspiciously - well, more suspiciously than usual.

Yep. I got that from the Bus Eireann Twitter. The way it's written it looks like it includes city services but don't shoot the messenger.

    Wait, no buses?

So far just in Leinster and Munster.

But the rest of the country just got red-stickered a couple of hours ago, after BE management were asleep. I'd expect the rest of the buses will cancel after they wake up in the morning.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,571 ✭✭✭0byme75341jo28

Will Aldi or Dunnes be open? I wasn't expecting any red warning until Thursday evening at least and I've feck all in...

They've updated. Definitely no city services. They will review tomorrow re Friday.

Edit: think I've got the screenshot to work:
Nope. I'll stick it up separately.

anyone know of An Post or DPD delivering? i'm waiting on a parcel from DPD

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,277 ✭✭✭Cheshire Cat

ParcelMotel did deliver. Got an email that my parcel was in the Dublin depot yesterday and now had a text to say it's in the locker in Galway. Didn't expect that!
Fortunately the locker isn't too far away. Will walk there.

Hardly any. Looks more or less the same like last evening. Just a light snow cover.

Not sure where you are but there's a good few cm on the east side.

I asked because there is very little additional overnight snow West of Galway even though the radar shows that it snowed.

The Red was issued so late, 11pm, that parents won't have had any opportunity to make arrangements. A lot of people won't know that the buses aren't running.

I wonder if the lack of gritting is being made worse by the need to prioritise the motorways. Did the Council get extra vehicles ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,443 ✭✭✭fergiesfolly

Maybe people could post if they know of any shops etc open this morning. A fair few would've got caught on the hop without supplies and a lot of businesses will close due to the red alert being in affect, even if local conditions are ok.

Bus eireann Twitter had it up at around 1am, I'm sure the radio stations would have had it this morning. No excuse for users not to inform themselves,I did.

Dunnes say they are all closed per their FB page, any big shops open around town supermarkets

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81,220 ✭✭✭✭biko

Got into work no bother. City streets are clear and quiet.
Apparently it will be bad this afternoon/evening so I will duck out early.

City shut down with 1cm of snow on the ground. Bad conditions not due here until 8pm onwards.

Having just walked to the shop I can tell you there's more than a cm on the ground, an inch or more in parts. Roads not treated are like glass.

Joyce's are open for anyone in need of a sliced pan.

Went to work yesterday evening, knew a red warning was close to inevitable but I didn't think I'd come damn close to stranded, not a taxi company answering the phone earlier. Wow.

Shut down because roads are like glass.

Tell that to the cars I saw spinning down the road earlier. I assume they were doing it for giggles.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81,220 ✭✭✭✭biko

Can we drop the roads like glass now?
One street can be slippery but another may not be, and this to and fro is just silly.
Or one car is on summer tyres and the next on winter tyres.

Everyone, just be careful and drive to the conditions.

Is it slippy around Westside? I really need to go to Aldi or I'll just be on plain pasta all weekend, but I'll need to walk both ways.. is it worth the risk?

Just walked the dogs. No problem. I was wearing walking shoes with a decent grip. But the snow is mostly powdery, so good to walk on. Avoid metal manhole covers etc and you should be fine. Aldi car park is normally well gritted.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81,220 ✭✭✭✭biko

The footpaths are probably covered in snow still but wear some good grip boots and be careful and you'll be fine.
People in Scandinavia and US gets this weather every year and can handle life just fine, we can too.

FYI, I was in Aldi Westside last night and they had very, very little bread, meat, porridge, fruit & veg on the shelves. No shortage of sweets, crisps and chocolate though :pac:

All weekend? The warning is only in place until tomorrow afternoon.
