So this just started shooting as a series in the new Troy studios in Limerick recently.
It's going to be a sci-fi psychological thriller.

Could be good. Has some good people working on it so hopefully it works out.

    https://www.rte.ie/entertainment/2018/0209/939626-new-sci-fi-drama-nightflyers-blasts-off-in-limerick/

No idea when it will be released but it's something to look forward to.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

Premiering this fall, Nightflyers follows eight maverick scientists and a powerful telepath who embark on an expedition to the edge of our solar system aboard The Nightflyer, in the hope of making contact with alien life. But when terrifying and violent events begin to take place they start to question each other – and surviving the journey proves harder than anyone thought.

The Nightflyers cast includes Eoin Macken (The Night Shift), Sam Strike (EastEnders), Maya Eshet (Teen Wolf), Angus Sampson (Fargo Season 2), Jodie Turner-Smith (The Last Ship), Gretchen Mol (Boardwalk Empire), David Ajala (Falling Water) and Brían F. O’Byrne (Aquarius).

It's no Space Truckers from Wicklow.

I think that looks really good. Look forward to seeing that.

    "It's like 'Psycho' In Space"

"It's like nothing you've seen before"

    Uhmmm...

In any case, the actual trailer looks good, very slick and cinematic though not much to go on with the characters. Am a little surprised it took THIS long for another GRR Martin property to get greenlit though. You'd imagine there'll be a very large casual interest in this, from the name alone.

I really hope it does well. It is being shot some of it anyway in the old Dell factory in Limerick. So it's good for Limerick and for the tv/movie industry Ireland too if this does well.

Injection is drawn by a Limerick person. It is good. It looks like it will be a tv show too.

Man they are really gorging on the GRR Martin kickbacks here; wouldn't hurt to have a trailer or promotion that lets folks know what the new show is, you know, about. Still have no proper clue as to what to expect here in terms of story or character. I get it SyFy, you got a Martin adaptation, give it a rest.

Ok, well that's the first proper look at the actual plot; looks interesting, definitely a dark psychological thriller; have already read the comparisons with Event Horizon.

This is a show that has felt like it has been coming out for ages; to the point I was actually wondering had it come & gone and I missed it.

Dunno, beyond the Martin link I'm not sure what the big appeal or hook is here.

The first 5 minutes have been released; so anyone on the fence should get a good feel for whether it'll be their bag or not. I think I'm out; looks way too generic.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,397 ✭✭✭✭FreudianSlippers

Looks pretty poor to me too; made in Limerick though, so wouldn't be bad for the locale for people to watch the first season!

Yeah, between this in Limerick & Krypton apparently made in Belfast, seems like SyFy are dabbling in Irish productions.

Actually SyFy is just the buyer of both shows. Nightflyers is Universal Cable Productions so it makes sense for SyFy (UCP and SyFy both being part of the NBC/GE/Universal/Comcast conglomerate) but it definitely was not specifically commissioned for SyFy. Not positive about Krypton, but I'm fairly sure it's also not commissioned by SyFy, as it's produced by one of the Warner companies and DC.

Just checked the wiki page, Syfy just air it. Warners and DC are the production companies with Warner Bros the distributor for Krypton

My impression of the first 5 minutes is that the cutlery should've floated if she was gonna be floating around like that. A minor production blip.

I wouldn't base a first impression around that 5 minutes though.
The first two episodes will feel much different!

Reviews are mixed so far, veering towards the negative overall but there seems to be enough in there to keep people interested:
    https://www.rottentomatoes.com/tv/nightflyers/s01/

Hopefully it secures a second season. It would be bad news for Troy Studios and Limerick if it is cancelled considering the investment and incentives the studio received locally from the Limerick Councils, and at a national level through Screen Ireland funding and tax breaks.

    Anyone watch it?

It’s been out in the wild all day.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

My 1st impression was TV production level hard scifi. Thinking about the way people interact, it reminds me of B5 a little.

The size of the ship is confusing but I'd say they'll get around to explaining that.

    Currently guessing
the Captain is AI and the threat is a .. Virus? AI

Also heads up it a daily episode release over the next 11 days according to Wikipedia.

No episode on the 7th or 8th.

I'm in no mad rush so I'll probably wait til it appears on Netflix tbh. Looks all right, but supernatural in space rarely works well together.

It arrives on Netflix tomorrow ;)

So I'm guessing they will follow the daily release structure as well.

Isn't this the same release pattern SYFY did with 12 Monkeys.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

Thinking about what threw me in the B5 direction... I'm guessing it was more than the way the characters interact but also the
rating of telepaths by levels and them bringing one to see an alien. The name of the aliens even sounds a little like vorlon .. (volcryn)

I watched the first two episodes today. If you have to put a genre on it, it's a bit like if Stephen King rewrote The Ring, set it on a spaceship, it was directed by Kubrick and produced by J.J. Abrams. (except the security guards who were clearly auditioning to be villagers with pitchforks on GoT)

I mostly enjoyed it, but it has that continuous atmosphere of eerie dread and weirdness, and all the characters act as if they're already dead. It's somewhere between 2001 and Event Horizon, and that works in a feature length form but I don't know if it will work well on a TV format

Not on Netflix now. Don't see anything online stating its release date.

Reviews are bad from viewers and critics - 6 on IMDB and 36% on Rotten Tomatoes. Not great for Troy Studios sadly, especially when a GRRM IP might give high expectations/be considered strong source material... Early days though lots of good shows have weak episodes right at the start.

A minor production blip that doesn't cut it these days - you wouldn't see that on The Expanse!

Unless the reviews are saying that the production values are bad I don't think it reflects badly on Troy Studios. They presumably didn't write the show or do the casting?
Based on George R.R. Martin's novella and a series of short stories — and a same-titled 1987 film adaptation — SyFy's Nightflyers is a encyclopaedia of science fiction and horror cinema influences, but despite outstanding production values and some fine sequences of terror and body horror, it succeeds mainly at making you want to revisit the work that inspired it.

yeah they said the production values were bad. The consensus on RT refers to "low budget aesthetics".

Oh, that's a shame, the reviews I read seem to be fairly positive on that front at least.
Sure there’s extra blood, extra darkness, and extra effects (which are quite good, honestly — even the spider robot)

    https://www.indiewire.com/2018/11/nightflyers-syfy-review-george-rr-martin-1202023374/
It does boast terrific special effects and an abundance of blood and gore, both of which are used generously

    https://nypost.com/2018/11/29/nightflyers-on-syfy-fumbles-in-space/

I'll have to give it a spin myself later.

im not sure its the effects that are cheap but the story
a captain who you never meet in person hmm
yerman is very slow to think that it might be the aliens are up to something with the telepath, considering it was the whole reason he brought the telepath

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

    3:  The
    neck snap!

Story is developing fine. The reveal of
the mother.. hrmmm, I'm not sure how that'll go. I'd say Eris has the power to remove her whenever but doesn't cos she's his mother.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,316 ✭✭✭✭the_syco

    but the story
a captain who you never meet in person hmm
    I'm assuming that that's because he's
AI, and thus the reason why he never leaves the ship.
