The 2018 Winter Olympics is starting, and we all get to watch the greatest ever sport known to humankind be played out on its biggest stage.

There will be no nuclear Armageddon between the two Korea's while the worlds best Stone Curlers take to the ice, and everyone stops what they are doing to watch in excitement.

Stone Curling at this elite level is always brilliant. :)

Remember the young American snowboarder who represented us 4 years ago. He said he wanted to use the experience to help him in his drive to make the US team in 4 years time.

I still remember the fellas name. 'O'Connor.'

The cheek of the guy, don't use us.

He bombed out in Sochi after. Fcking loser.

Fully agree with the OP. I love curling, I'll often watch it on Eurosport during the year.

Has Seamus McShocknessy ever even been to Ireland?
Saw interview the other night, cringe.

I wonder is 14th Baronet, Clifton Hugh Lancelot de Verdon Wrottesley (from the Darndale Wrottesleys I think) taking part for us this time. Usually good for a Top 6 finish.

If your defenition of a loser is a 2 time Olympian at 20 I am sure you are a sporting genius!

He competes in slope style, a judged sport, a run that could win you the x Games might see you finish 8th in the olympics!

Oh and he is carrying the flag for us tomorrow and yep he ha been to Ireland

His comments 4 years ago pissed people off, we're not here to fund his dreams.

If he has aspirations to represent his homeland America great but don't use another country to get there.

Can this be our official olympics thread?

Also, anyone else still watching Eurosport? “what do you do when you’re on the verge of winning gold in the men’s relay when suddenly you lose your false teeth?”

You go back and search for them of course and still go on to win!

I am sure everything you said at 16 you still believe now! As for Funding are you kidding me, the maximum funding for Irish SNOWSPORTS athletes is so low low you would not believe me if I told you! There annual funding wouldn't cover a decent 2nd hand car

    Biathlon is the coolest sport.

You ski a bit, shoot a bit and then ski again. You carry the rifle on your back !!!

    Its freakin awesome.

When society as we know it falls apart it's the biathloners that will survive. Stone sliding just ain't gonna cut it.

Why can’t they impose FIFA rules....if you’re called for a country at senior level, yer stuck with them...would cut out that kind of carry-on;)...(didn’t think I’d ever be lauding FIFAs way of doing anything :D:D)

Ski and Snowboard Cross along with the speed skating is where it is at

Followed then by the luge, skeleton and bobsleigh.

Ice Hockey will not be the same without the NHL players

Can actually be an interesting sport to watch. Infinitely more watchable than a lot of cool /popular ones imho (F1, golf being the first that comes to mind)

If you've actually watched the Curling, you'll see that they move at a fair clip - no messing around. One stone has barely stopped when they're lining up for the next one. I'm Scottish, so I'm quite looking forward to it - it's my home country's other great sporting export, after Golf.

(The GB teams are actually the Scotland teams - the "home nations" complete separately during qualifying, and last year Scotland's Men and Women won Silver and Bronze respectively at the World Championships.)

I grew up going to ice hockey matches and I still have soft spot for it. It doesn't translate on tv that well but watched live is great sport. Ice skating can be cool too. Ski Jumps can be a bit meh because they don't do the biggest hills on Olympics but I like to see Ski flight championships.

I went looking for some curling but it took me a few minutes to figure out that it is six am in Korea.

Its a bit like snooker in that initially it seems totally pointless and boring but once you give it a chance its actually quite tense.

The Daily Mail seems to be reading Boards - they've picked up on this. Bad news, guys - she's married, to her Curling partner. :o

I remember this sudden interest in Curling happened four years ago, too, and eight years ago. Last time it was the Scotland GB captain Eve Muirhead, who's skipping the Olympics this year. It seems to be a thing: people come across the Curling, start off going "what?, and then "oh, that's cool".

Saw her in the semi finals against Switzerland today, oh boy, that was a nerve wrecking one. She's a stunner and a determined athlete.

Curling together with Bowls are the pinnacle of sports, I don't care what others think.

With all this interest I'm worried that it will get too competitive and we'll start to hear about the cheating and the drugs and the expose of how the Asian gambling syndicates have fixed the games ....

    Enjoy it while it lasts

Drug testing is done in curling and in wheelchair curling.

But what about training at altitude and sleeping in hyperbaric chambers and subtle levels of human growth hormone extracted from cadavers ?

Competitive sliding around? Sometimes combined with competitive lying down?

Combination of new baby so staying up late and olympics many time zones away means I can indulge in some nonsense sports that the wife would otherwise not be having a bar of. Curling is always a highlight. I’ve watched loads of it over the years and still don’t understand the scoring but it doesn’t stop me enjoying it.

The Curling is back on the Beeb because GB is facing off against Canada. It's the round robin phase, so this is for points only, but these are the two top teams in the sport. Canada has the early lead but GB are fighting back.

I should know Brits are involved in it. It ties in well with cricket and darts as the most boring sports. Winter Olympics should be are all about sports where broken limbs and missing teeth are a real possibility. Not about using sweeping brush on ice.

How are the Irish team doing over there?

Not much coverage on them in the media. Heard a fella came last in something on Saturday and that was about it.
