I used to shave with Gillette and Mach III cartridge razors but they were shіt and too expensive. I bought a Wilkinson Sword Safety Razor and I get a great shave. The razors are dirt cheap too. Gillette and Mach III can go to fucκ.

    use the blades off these

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Gillette-Blue3-Mens-Disposable-Razor/dp/B0046ZT0Z6/ref=sr_1_2_s_it?s=drugstore&ie=UTF8&qid=1517793980&sr=1-2&keywords=blue+3+razor

put the blades on this holder (same blades but better handle but these are usually more expensive just for product segmentation - the handle on the blue 3 is deliberatively bad. just clip them off and on)
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Gillette-Sensor-Mens-Disposable-Razors/dp/B014DGA1F0/ref=sr_1_2_s_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1517793708&sr=1-2&keywords=sensor+3&dpID=51GIluC4rBL&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch

with this shaving brush. shaving brush is the way to go as it gives the best shave
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004X1BFEM/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

with palmolive shave stick (lasts 6 months for 1 stick)
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Palmolive-Classic-Shave-Stick-PACK/dp/B002MFSY54/ref=sr_1_1_s_it?s=drugstore&ie=UTF8&qid=1517793926&sr=1-1&keywords=palmolive+shave+stick&dpID=41bPTYHtP1L&preST=_SX300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch

have tried all the disposable blades, these are the best imo.

I use Wilkinson Sword too, usually get about three months from a cartridge.
Gillette are a pure marketing gimmick, three or four mediocre shaves and they're finished.

Wilkinson Sword to shave the head, but use a shavette with these blades to shape my beard.

Wife got me a Bombay shaving company kit for Christmas. Before then I was once a week with a Mach 3, costs a fortune for blades.
This new set up is, I think unnecessarily fancy but it really is enjoyable as a ritual and the blades are way, way better and cheaper. You soak your face with a hot cloth, then use an exfoliator, then a small amount of foam in your hand lathered with a badger brush (really is a lovely feeling on your face) then shave with a very sharp, heavy razor with a single double sided blade in it, let the weight do the work instead of scraping. Then a nice balm.

Like I say, unnecessary levels of fanciness and arsing about but it feels lovely and the shave is spectacularly close, does make you feel a little more confident for some reason. Not normally a fan of these kinds of luxury items but I'd swear by this.

Using this one a good while from mühle https://www.shaving.ie/products/muhle-r89-rosegold.html Great weight to it. Probably last me a lifetime. Use the Taylor of old bond Street creams
Seem to get a great shave with them https://www.tayloroldbondst.co.uk/Mobile/sandalwood-shaving-cream-bowl-150g-c2x21137165

I use Gillette Fusion stuff and find it excellent, although bowel-evacuatingly expensive. Aldi do an equivalent for a fraction of the price and a couple of my mates tell me it's very good too.

Mid-week, it'd be a wilkinson sword cartridge razor in the shower.

At the weekend, I have both an old Gilette safety razor and a Dovo Solingen straight razor that I alternate between (basically depending on how much time I have to indulge myself) that I use along with some L'Occitane shaving soap and brush.

mühle safety razor and feather blades.unless I lose it I'd expect the razor to last a lifetime.

I have a Mach 3 that I use maybe once every 6-8 weeks.Very handy when in a a hurry, I'd say 3 mins does the job but not a great shave.

Always shaved with Gilette for years but got pissed off with the price and my face was always pretty sensitive after.

Purchased Double Edge Razor last year from shaving.ie along with a nice badger brush and shaving cream and haven't looked back.

I find shaving is now less of a chore then it was and because you generally only have to do one stroke my face is alot less sentitive after.

And they also offer a discount for boards.ie users :-)

I voted safety razor because I thought that's what mach 3 blades were, so there should be another vote for cartridges. I must buy myself a decent shaving kit because the mach 3 blades become dulled after a few shaves and they're moderately expensive to keep buying. I shave every 4 or 5 days because it irritates the skin around my neck to shave too often. Sometimes I let my beard grow for about 7 or 8 days too to give my skin that bit more time to breathe and my stubble some time to grow and I find have a much cleaner shave if I wait a bit longer, not sure of the science behind that. It's strange because I can remember as a teenager in the 2000s shaving every day or two when I would have had very little stubble but it just seemed like the thing to do, even though it irritated my skin. I think people felt less comfortable not being clean shaven back then and beards were definitely the exception.

Buy a safety razor, DE blades and a good quality brush and shaving soap.
It will cost around €100(could spend a lot more if you wanted) to get started but after that the savings are huge and the shave should be a whole lot better.
The razor will last you a lifetime, blades cost >50c.

You wouldn't need to shave with a safety razor every day, it's a very tight shave and it's the cheapest way to shave.
I'm still on the same box of blades after a few years.

    https://www.shaving.ie/products/100-astra-superior-platinum-de-blades-carton.html

Just checked bought them in April 2013, still not finished the box. €2 a year on blades, not to bad.

I bought 100 Feather blades about 4 years ago and still have plenty left. Cost about 30c a blade.
They take a little getting used of but give an extremely close shave.

Got a gift of a safety razor deluxe starter kit a few years ago. Haven't looked back. I don't need to be clean shaven for work unless I have a meeting so generally shave every second day. Can't remember the last time I bought blades - the packs seem to last for ever as does the tub of cream. I have converted several friends.

Gota lovely safety razor from shaving.ie and its the bizz. Lovely close shave that would do for a couple days easily.
Really economical too, the blades are dirt cheap ordered in bulk and last a few shaves easily.
50 quid of blades lasts me about a year or more :)

The least economical way was the Gillette Mach stuff. Jesus the money I wasted on them before switching.

But if I'm in an awful hurry I'd use the lecky razor. Don't like it though, spent good money on it and it still always leaves the impression you shaved yesterday, if even.

Tried a Babyliss designer stubble yolk too for about a hundred quid and it went in the bin. Looked all patchy and uneven. Hatchet job.

A good quality safety razor all the way.

It says above doesn't ship to Ireland but anyway I got a new electric shaver only recently. Might try Wilkinson Sword blades again for the wet shave as cartridges are quite expensive. Might look at the options above too.

Usually give myself a go over with an electric shaver before then finishing off with a wet shave (Gillette).

Takes a bit longer than I’d like and it is a pain in the arse, but I find it gives my the best results by far.

Any longer than a day between shaving and using one of the electric or the Gillette just doesn’t give me a good enough result.

Make the move to a safety razor you won't regret it. It'll take a few tries to get the hang of it, you will get a way better shave than with a gillete in about the same length of time, no need to use an electric first.
The only downside side is the initial outlay,
5 years worth of blades €10
    Decent safety razor €30
Good shaving cream €12 (should last 6mts +)
    Shaving brush €10

Merkur Progress + usually Astra blades. I alternate between Astra and Feather.

Bought the razor more than 10 years ago. Just got 100 blades for about 15 euro. I change every 2 or 3 days so 100 lasts me just under a year.

Do you have to use the shaving brush and shaving cream, could I just use regular shaving gel?

Interested in trying but don't want to be messing with brushes :)

One thing I don't understand, how will they shave better than a regular premium Gillette razor?

By better do you mean closer/smoother finish?

The blades won't be much sharper and sharper will just provide a more comfortable and easier shave anyway

I have had barber cutthroat shaves before and being honest I did not notice them being a closer shave, more comfortable alright, but visually no difference and freshness feeling went away after an hour or so

Honestly it's worth paying extra for a better shaving cream and brush. I'm currently using Jack Black Supreme Cream, previously used Taylor of Old Bond Street and Baxter of California and found them both very good. I've tried Proraso and found it not be up the same quality as the other brands.

You can just use regular gel but the advantage of the brush is that it lifts the hairs up so you can get a closer shave.

Voted "not at all". I hated shaving, always came out all blotchy and bleeding. Stupid, pointless practice. I last shaved in 1995, now trim the beard once a week with electric clippers. I must have saved hundreds of hours and a quite substantial sum of money over the years!

Don't know never tried them with gel, brush isn't a big deal just rinse it under the tap when finished. I just dip the brush in the cream and off I go. It's not time consuming same as putting gel on with your hands you just using a brush.

You get a tighter shave. Won't grow back as quick. So long since I used a gilette but think I had to shave every day. Don't need to anymore. My skin isn't irritated at all, why drag 3 blades across your face when you can drag one.

Using a brush and good quality soap is a must. Shaving gel is crap imo. Using a brush will lift the hairs for a better shave.

I'd guess the likes of feather blades are much sharper than a Mach 3 and do give a closer shave. Less irritation as well when you aren't dragging 3 blades over your face with every stroke.

Haven't shaved in 8 years. Run a cheap Gillette disposable over my cheeks once a week and beard trimmer on the rest.

Used to use mach3 in the shower once or twice a week before that and always suffered some kind of rash and ingrown hairs from that.

Used Gillette abd Wilkinson for years with varying success. Very expensive.

I'd be grateful if someone could provide links to what they think would be a good "intro" set. Dont really mind spending the money if it will be worth it in the long run.

Is the shaving cream required for use with thr brush expensive? What size does it come in and how long would you expect it to lasy with use 4/5 days a week.

Been using a safety razor for a fair few years now. Switch between a merkur and a muhle every few months. Switch blade type regularly. Usually rotate between feather, 7 o'clock yellows and astra.

Got a really super badger brush which cost almost €200 and its amazing. Usually use ToOBS shaving cream. Lemon and Lime being my favourite. Or Geo F Tumper lime.

Start with proraso and finish with Geo F Trum extract of lime skin food. And some floid blue

Started shaving with a safety razor a few years back, you do need to be patient and there is more of a ritual in the prep and post shave. It will take some time to get the hang of it and finding out which direction of the grain runs on your face and neck.

The regular blades in the supermarket are ridiculously priced, they have some of the biggest markup out of anything in a supermarket or shop.

Something like 4750% markup on manufacturing costs. I just purchased 50 Astra blades for just over a tenner and bowl of old Bond Street shaving cream for about the same again. That will last me about a year or two.

You need to take your time, it takes a bit of getting used to if moving from cartridge.

Yeah first time you do it you'll Nick yourself a few times, the safety razor is sharper but it's also heavier, you're probably still pressing down a bit like you would with the Gillette or whatever, a couple more goes and that stop happening once you're used to the weight and the feel of it.

Use Gillette Fusion, no major hassles, apart from price. A cartridge used to last 6-8 weeks and that would be shaving at least 5 days a week

Since I started shaving my head every second day it's down to lasting about 3 weeks before switching

Should really look into other options, but the above works and I'm kind of lazy like that
