What do people make of people calling to there yard selling items for the farm ie gates etc have had a few recently and they can be very persuasive or have a lack of understanding for the word no, insisting on buying what they are selling, just wondering how do others deal with these type of salesmen?

    Step 1: 'No'.
    Step 2: Ignore.
    Step 3: Repeat step 2.

I usually follow the above steps but they don't always seem to understand

Mod snip...... Illegal stuff is illegal, even insinuating the use of illegal stuff is contrary to our charter. Let's keep this discussion on track as it's an easy subject to get bogged down in. Thanks. GC

    SNIP

Never take out a snip until you are going to use it...not threaten to use it

Op a closed gate is a huge deterrent some of those lads are shocking lazy

You would not want to be taking out a SNIP, sounds very extreme and only opening a whole other can of worms

A cranky demeaner works a lot of the time, just say no and walk away, I used to get away with saying the boss isn't here but not so much anymore.

A neighbour (bachelor farmer, mid 70's) had a man in a Hiace call three times offering to tar his front yard. On the third visit he told him to wait a minute as he had a pan on the range, returned back out with the shotgun broken in the crook of his arm. Didn't raise it or even mention it, just held it and let it be seen.

That put a finish to the visits.

Its gone to the stage where you need your gate going into your closed and have a dog they don't like getting out when they shouldn't . You just don't entertain these lads once they get you talking they have you.

first things do is pull out my phone and take a pic of the van, reg , driver. I don’t even do it discreetly anymore. Then “NO NO NO, not interested “

You lads have legal firearms something us city dwellers lack to deal with that problem

Because nobody in Dublin has a legally held firearm

It's about the dumbest piece of advice one could possibly give.

Anyone have to deal with the frozen food salesmen?Had a few of them around here. All oddballs. I had to threaten one clown with the guards after he spent over 2 hrs sitting in the yard, left and returned at 9.00 that night.

Mod note Folks I know this is a sensitive and emotive subject in rural Ireland, but try keep it civil, thanks.

What works for me is a sign saying video security camera in operation, a dog, keep the road gate closed.

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

Someone parked up in your yard for 2hours, how come you ddnt move him on immediately and why and for what reason did he return?
Id be taking pictures and telling them to move on, a refusal is then trespassing surely.

Just to annoy the bo11ox. Was watching him the whole time. He had become a nuisance, calling every 2 months.

We have text alert in our area. So when they call just take out my phone and pretend to read the text alert in front of him. " klo red transit van acting suspiciously in the ****** area. Contact ******* garda station". They don't normally wait after that

Was it Heav€&(y foods. Oh had to run them from here. I am lucky enough in that if they dont know me they ask for the bossman and I just say he's not here. Otherwise I just say no and walk into the house. Slam door.

Was in a neighbours yard just before Christmas when a 171 transit called. Apparently he had
"Fine big bright LED lights for the yard sir"
Luckily there already were fine big lights at every corner and over every door. No sale there so had to go on his merry way.

Had them too but was told "these lights are better and sure if the boss was around he might want a few!" No thanks I'm grand, "These are great lights sir and not too expensive, great security around the place" he said!

Ye are too soft on them lads.you want to stop them the second they open their mouth and run them off up the road.dont in any way entertain their talk.they prey on the elderly and people who are afraid to say no.if the stuff they are selling isn’t stolen it’s China’s cheapest sh1te and you will never get a bargain from these salesmen as they call themselves.
Shut them down the second they start talking and be as thick and ignorant with them as possible.and don’t answer any questions either.when they get a firm no they usually follow up with a “is the boss around the farm back the road sir.in no uncertain terms rev up and fcuk off with them.
If ever anyone approaches you selling their sh1te and you didn’t approach them with the intention of buying anything it’s a scam and a load of sh1te.

Had a guy stop here yesterday in a van. Funny but the minute I spotted him, I knew he was genuine. A farmer down from Galway looking for a local business that fixes electric fencers. Ended up talking about the shortage of silage and the bad weather.
He was looking for someone for directions so very thankful to get them and I was glad to help him. We're very near the road so if I had all the security in place etc, I would never had met him. Sad that we are becoming a society like that.

dont want to derail the thread, but would you be able to PM where the guy who fixes electric fences is!

    thanks

P.S. i actually find the guys selling the frozen food are harder to get rid of than the crew selling gates/tools etc

Neighbour of mine had a call one day from an undesirable van sales man selling all sorts of sh1te and if he didn't have it he could get for him, anyway when he was talking to the neighbour, the neighbour said he never once looked at him when he was talking to him, but looking all around to see what was in the place and what the neighbour had that was visible in the yard.
Eventually he shook him off after saying 20 times that he didn't want anything and the "salesman" said what about the lad next door (me)?
The neighbour said i was a retired detective (i am not any of this) and would love for him to call as he (me) does DIY and wants tools! The white van man took off out the gate and never came back!!!

I met a lad not too far from me in local filling station a few yrs back. Said he called a few days earlier but I was out. If it was the pope that called I wouldn't have got a bigger shock.
I came home and spent that evening and the next day engineering a platform in the shed to carry the diesel tank. Tank was outside and locked but wasn't going to take the chance.
Guaranteed to be raided. The visit to my yard was a reconnaissance mission. A few of his family were caught red handed pumping green diesel in a yard around 2am in a yard one night.

Are you by chance referring to "members of the travelling community" ?

I have had visits from them in the past and they definitely don't know what the word No means.

We took two large, aggresive American Bulldogs (google them) on to our own land (youth/community sports club land in Dublin's inner city) to try and convince unwelcome visitors to move along. The dogs were straining at the leads, growling, frothing and barking.

    Visitor: "will that dag bite?"

Me: "yes, they're aggressive and trained to protect their owners and land"

    Visitor: "Are those dags nasty?"

Me: "yep, they're vicious and strong, they'll overpower you"

Visitor: "I'll give you ninty pound for the two of them"

I swear the dogs stopped barking and looked at each other.

These callers are scared of CCTV and being recorded. Some signs up are a good deterrent.

Hi, I never really post in the forum but I saw the thread don't know if it's relevant. It's a story that was in my local newspaper last week.
An older man was home alone and a man dressed in pointed dress shoes knocked at the door and said I'm very sorry I ran over you cat and the man said sorry but both my cats are sitting by the fire. The man then went on to try and sell stuff to the elderly man.
It's just one of these ruses that would really get you away from the door and ye might let people know about. It could be very easy to fall for.

When ever these men call to us there always in very shiny brown/black shoes!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 418 ✭✭cycle4fun

I feel sorry for older vulnerable farmers. I had a lad in a van who called to the farmyard trying to sell me a fireplace once, I did not need one but he was a bit aggressive and I was glad to see the end of him. Must have been robbed out of someone else's house and he wanted to offload it quickly.

Anything these guys sell you can get better quality, possibly cheaper AND a receipt if things go wrong in a bricks and mortar shop or online.

There's no good reason to entertain lads selling stuff door to door in this day and age. It's not the 1950's ffs.

His answer,, 'Oh so you only buy legit.(imate)'

    I said yea. He left.

I'd take out my snip and snip the snip! No I wouldn't. A trick I've learned is to pull on their superstitious nature. The have an awful fear of intellectually challenged. So I turn one foot sideways limp over to drivers window while drooling! Bless myself look to the sky and ask the occupants do they hear de crows.. shooting the ffers night and day and they torments me with their screaming..

Well truthfully I only did it once and I signed a little cross on the wing mirror too. They left rapidly!

Had a lad here last year selling pots and pans out of the boot of a brand new golf.white socks pointy black shoes and the rosary beads on the rear view mirror.thank god says I I’m pure sick of cooking my dinner in a hole in the ground using water and hot stones from an open fire.
I told him I wasn’t buying anything and I hadn’t time for his sh1te.que the questions and answers session.is there anyone living next door up the road?just keep answering dont know to everything and they soon give up the chase.
