    I would imagine some do. I'm older than that now, but probably would have suffered a bit with that over the years (never to the point of stopping me doing something, mind you)

    But what I would say to that is - firstly, if you actually look around in a swimming pool you'll see every size, shape, age and ability is there, doing their thing - you'll just be one more.

    And what you also eventually realise is (and this applies to gyms also) - everyone is so busy concentrating on their own business/workout/image/etc that really nobody is paying the slightest bit of attention to you (or anyone else).

    So if you think swimming would be your thing, then just go for it.

    Whilst I agree that the OP should be encouraged to not be self conscious I think its a falsehood to suggest "nobody is paying the slightest bit of attention to you"

    It's human nature to check other people out - it happens everywhere.
