The Walking Dead will return for season 9 later on this year with a brand new showrunner, it's been confirmed.
Scott Gimple's controversial tenure as the AMC series' boss will draw to a close following a promotion that will see him oversee the entire franchise as the confirmed crossover with spinoff series Fear the Walking Dead takes effect.

Angela Kang, who has been working as a writer and co-executive producer on the post-apocalyptic drama since 2011, will step into the role from the season one premiere which is expected to premiere October 2018. Fans will recognise Kang's name as the writer of acclaimed episodes 'Coda' and 'Still.'

Charlie Collier, president of AMC, said: “This is an enormously important day for the entire The Walking Dead television universe. We are proud to acknowledge Angela’s significant contribution to the series and to set a clear path forward for a ninth season under her direction. Further, with gratitude and admiration, we also recognise Scott’s broad impact on, and leadership of, the content that fuels our TWD universe.

“Together, we will dream bigger and more broadly than ever before. I know I speak for Angela, Scott and everyone at AMC when I say thanks most of all to the fans and the many talented people who have helped AMC play Dead.”

Speaking about her appointment, Kang said; “I am beyond thrilled to be stepping into this new role with The Walking Dead. Working on this series and having the opportunity to adapt Robert Kirkman’s amazing comic has been a fangirl dream come true for me. I’m excited to continue working with Scott and the wonderfully supportive folks at AMC, and can’t wait to share the next chapter of the story with our fans next fall.”

Kang will be the series' fourth showrunner following Frank Darabont, Glen Mazzara and Gimple.

Fans have been calling for Gimple's departure following a run of seasons that many have deemed the weakest to date, capped with a twist deployed in the midseason 8 finale which saw the shock death of an original character - something that comic book creator Robert Kirkman has since praised.

Gimple's role, however, remains hugely important following the news that Lennie James' character Morgan was to depart the main show - which he has appeared on since its debut season in 2010 - for Fear the Walking Dead alongside cast members Kim Dickens, Colman Domingo and Frank Dillane.

Potentially good news. Hopefully it's the Dilbert Principle in action.

The Walking Dead star Lauren Cohan rumoured to be considering exit after 'rejecting pay offers
    Is it goodbye for Maggie?

Rumours surrounding the future of Lauren Cohan on The Walking Dead continue.

The AMC drama has already lost a major character in Carl Grimes, after showrunner Scott Gimple made the creative decision to kill him off, but the possibility that Maggie will be written out as well is still there.

Cohan's contract is up at the end of the season and is in negotiations with AMC to sign a new deal. While it was previously reported that there was no indication that the actress wanted to leave, now it seems like she is seriously considering her options after being purported to be looking at a number of pilot offers.

The Hollywood Reporter is claiming that Cohan is apparently not satisfied with the salary offers put forward by the network.

The publication writes: "Although Cohan is not seeking salary parity with male leads Andrew Lincoln and Norman Reedus, her camp and AMC have been engaged in a months-long negotiation that remains far apart."

The report continues by suggesting that the actress is "actively looking for her next job".

Whether Cohan stays or goes, the show will see a massive shake-up anyway. Gimple is handing over the reins as Angela Kang becomes the first female showrunner of the AMC drama for the start of season nine.

They should but you know they will try to carry on without him for a season or two.

Ouch, two big losses there. I think the actors know it and we know it, the show is dying/dead.

Imagine the show will limp to season ten at the least. Then have that fool Gimple claim it was the intended course of action all along.

Wonder if JDM would be willing to take centre stage.

Either way....if the rumour is true, the show is officially redundant.

i bet they dont even give us a conclusion or decent ending and the show just trails off after 8 years. What a train wreck this show turned into. I feel sorry for the new show runner she's got one hell of a mess on her hands.

Nah Neegan doesn't work without Rick , even the shockingly **** version the TV show gave us and he also doesn't work without Carl so yeah in short **** gimp and AMC

Up to now I was still a loyal watcher despite all the mental changes they've made through the show

This show has been on its last legs for a few years now. Creaky dragged out storytelling, truly puzzling pacing, the pretension laid on with a trowel way too often and repetition of themes with no real arc. The actors involved must see the writing on the wall, especially over the last two seasons. Even something like the staple character of the comics like Coral being dropped must have had the cast thinking WTF. TBH I'm surprised more haven't decided to cash in on their profile and jump before now. When it loses the Maggie and Rick characters it's game over. Too much audience connection has been built up with Rick especially. It's been pretty much the Rick Show with Zombies, his and his family's story and has been from day one. For me anyway the franchise will only survive on the FTWD show. If they don't screw that up and while it has its issues, so far the quality there has been going up while the main show's been going down.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

    Season 9 trailer;

“This will be my last season playing the part of Rick Grimes. I love this show. It means everything to me. I love the people who make this show. I’m particularly fond of the people who watch this show.” - Andrew Lincoln #TWD #SDCC

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,276 ✭✭✭✭StringerBell

I've checked completely out of the TWD world since the finale, only today did I learn that Andy is leaving. That is pretty much it for me, once he goes it can die. Saddened by the news but not shocked really, he has been carrying the show a long time and surely has to turn down more lucrative offers.

Hopefully they just wrap it up, probably drag it for another season after he goes but its simply not TWD without him. Its his story and if he is finished thats the end to the story.

Season 9 - What we know so far
    (Mild Spoilers, especially regarding castings)

    Airdate

    October 7th, 2018

    Official Promo

    Cast

    Andrew Lincoln/Rick Grimes

Andrew Lincoln is exiting The Walking Dead in season nine. His departure was first reported in May, along with news that Norman Reedus (Daryl Dixon) will see a major pay increase as he becomes the new number one on the call sheet. Kirkman confirmed news of Lincoln's departure, and the actor himself addressed the elephant in the room during an appearance Friday at San Diego Comic-Con: "This will be my last season playing Rick Grimes."

An emotional Lincoln added that season nine features two of his favorite episodes since the pilot, though that should hardly soften the blow for viewers who have come to love The Walking Dead predominantly because of the Rick Grimes experience. The actor has already returned to London and shaved off Rick's signature beard, so expect the beloved character's exit to come in the first half of the season — which remains in production in Atlanta

    Jon Bernthal/Shane Walsh

As Lincoln leaves, an old face is returning to the fold, if only for a moment: Jon Bernthal is set to reprise his role as Shane Walsh in season nine. It's unclear how or how long Shane will come back, given the fact that Rick's former BFF died in season two, though Walking Dead is no stranger to flashbacks, dream sequences and hallucinations.

    Lauren Cohan/Maggie Greene

Lincoln isn't the only longtime star leaving The Walking Dead in season nine, as Lauren Cohan has signed on to star in ABC's Whiskey Cavalier following a salary standoff with AMC, signaling an end to her run as Maggie Greene Rhee. However, Cohan announced a return to The Walking Dead shortly after the season eight finale, and she's featured prominently in promotional material for the new season. Sources say Cohan — like Lincoln — will appear in six of the first eight episodes of the season, with an exit that allows room for Maggie's return down the line.

    Avi Nash and Callan McAuliffe

While Lincoln and Cohan eye their exits, two actors have strengthened their ties with The Walking Dead. Season eight recurring players Avi Nash and Callan McAuliffe have been promoted to series regulars for season nine, guaranteeing more time with Siddiq and Alden, respectively, in the zombie apocalypse. Siddiq, if you'll recall, was the former doctor whom Carl (Chandler Riggs) saved.

    Behind the camera

-The Walking Dead undergoes its biggest creative change in several seasons. Longtime producer and writer Angela Kang has been promoted to showrunner for season nine, replacing Scott M. Gimple, who has transitioned to a new role as the chief content officer of the Walking Dead franchise, a move that comes in the wake of Robert Kirkman's Amazon deal.

-Michael Cudlitz (Abraham Ford) is set to direct the seventh episode of the ninth season.

    Season 9 Time Jump

Following the end of season eight's "All-Out War," season nine will jump forward in time, as was the case in the comics from Kirkman and Charlie Adlard. According to Kang,

"We're jumping forward in time, so we get to play with the look and the feel of the show. Both from a technical level — we reviewed the filming style and continue to shoot on film — but also in terms of the way the stories and the things look onscreen. And what we're seeing is a little bit different. We're seeing the world start to break down around our characters a bit more.

They run into challenges, with things like the infrastructure breaking down around them and things that they used to scavenge being in much shorter supply. We get to see a world where they're not relying on unstable gas that's hard to find; they are taming horses; they're pulling wagons; they're fashioning more hand weapons so they don't have to rely on bullets as much. That's been really fun. We get to play while staying true to the principles of The Walking Dead that people love. It's a new era in terms of where our characters are at and the challenges they're facing."

Absolutely not. Daryl is set to become the leading man, and he's not even in the comics!

Will be interesting to see how much they touch on the CommonWealth storyline in Season 9 with The Whisperers and Alpha being the main background story. Carl was an integral part of The Whisperers storyline in the comic books so they will have to vere away from the comic books again.

Hopefully Season 9 will be the reboot the main show seriously needs.

The whispers where great arc in the comic but they will seem absurd on TV IMO.

Plenty of potential regarding the whisperers arc, it'll also be far easier to translate them over to the show than it was for the Negan arc.

Walking Dead' Casts Key Comic Book Character for Season 9

    casslydia.jpg
Cassady McClincy joins a rapidly swelling cast of series regulars and recurring players as the AMC zombie drama enters new territory.

AMC's The Walking Dead just cast a key comic book character as it charts its future without Rick and Carl Grimes.

Actress Cassady McClincy (Love, Simon) has boarded the zombie drama in the key recurring role of Lydia.

The casting arrives as The Walking Dead is charting a new course without Andrew Lincoln's central Rick Grimes and after the shocking death of his son, Carl (Chandler Riggs) last season. Season nine, the first with new showrunner Angela Kang, will jump forward in time and introduce
the Whisperers, a new group of survivors who walk among the dead in skin suits made of human flesh.
The Whisperers are overseen by Alpha, who will be played in season nine by new series regular Samantha Morton. McClincy's Lydia is Alpha's daughter

Lauren Cohan Could Return for The Walking Dead Season 10

    looking-out-for-your-own-the-walking-dead-s8e12-400x300.jpg
Like Andrew Lincoln, Lauren Cohan is planning on leaving The Walking Dead sometime this season. But also similar to her co-star, Cohan might return next year. “I’ll say first of all that we’ve still planned some more story with Maggie, Lauren wants to, it will be a little subject to her schedule but hopefully we have her back next season,” showrunner Angela Kang recently told Comicbook.com’s Brandon Davis during a set visit.

“We have always planned to have this great story with Maggie this season and I think we promised something. We wanted to pay off that promise. We definitely have a very strong Maggie arc,” Kang said. That arc will be told as Maggie leads Hilltop, cares of her new baby, and fights with Rick over his decision to save Negan. Although there’s still ambiguity about Rick’s fate, we know for a fact Lauren Cohan’s Maggie will be leaving, not getting killed off the show (she even called Maggie’s story “open-ended” earlier this Summer). This is mostly due to her upcoming role on the ABC show “Whiskey Cavalier,” among other projects.

Despite the new show, Kang is still optimistic Cohan will return for a (yet to be announced) 10th season. “Lauren has always been such a great actress for us, has done some spectacular work this season, as you’ve seen in the episodes but also in the episodes that are upcoming,” Kang said. “There’s just some stuff that just blew me away. I’m just a pure fan. I think that’s been, again, it’s just something we wanted to do right by that character, but again it also opens up some interesting opportunities for other characters when that character is gone for reasons that will be explained in the story.”
