Solar panel size

    What size would be needed to go off grid on the south coast during the summer months considering Irish weather?
    26ft yacht with nav lights, interior lights, raymarine tiller pilot,garmin chartplotter, radio dvd player, vhf dsc radio, small fridge, depth sounder, phone/ tablet charging,wind instruments, eberpacher heater, co2 alarm, gas alarm,auto bilge pump, garmin gps
    Nanni 12hp diesel with 60amp alternator

    I don't think a 26 foot yacht is big enough :) even if you covered the boat in solar panels I don't think you will get enough power for all of that, even a small fridge draws a lot power and will probably drain your batteries faster than you can charge them. Where not quite there yet when it comes to solar panels and batteries hopefully one day.

    It all depends on the size of your habitation battery and if you use LED lights and how much you uses everything else. Also do you need auto helm on all the the time? Can you do sheet to helm steering of hove too if when needed. Also it's the summer will you be running the heating. Will you be running the engine from time to time.

    To work out what panel you need, calculate your expected daily consumption in Amp Hours, the pic a panel which replace at least that or enough battery capacity to run for a couple of says with out a charge. For the fridge, use blocks of ice, try freezing two ltr bottles of water. They should last a few days. If you are eating on the boat either pre cook an freeze or buy local.

    If you can run the fridge from gas, it might reduce your electricity requirement a good bit?

    All bit relative Gaffer Falls in the peace & quiet of some Cork Bay any noise is noisy I suppose... www.noisehelp.com/noise-level-chart.html
